10 Invincible Heroes Who Stole the Spotlight (Without Being Invincible Himself)

Robert Kirkman’s ‘Invincible,’ one of Image Comics’ most renowned and acclaimed series, has been captivating readers for years. With its third season on Amazon Prime Video’s animated adaptation underway and a fourth promised, fans have flocked back to or discovered the original comics for the first time. The series has proven to be a resounding success and is expected to continue along this path. While Mark Grayson (also known as Invincible) is undeniably cool, his universe is teeming with other remarkable characters. The roster of the secondary team book, ‘Guardians of the Globe,’ frequently rotates, offering a wealth of possibilities. Consequently, we’re counting down the top characters from this diverse group.

After the addition of characters to the series “Invincible” beyond its conclusion, it becomes challenging to arrange all the heroes in order, especially when characters from other Image Comics titles are introduced as well. However, don’t anticipate seeing Spawn or Savage Dragon on this list. You might think of them as honorable mentions if that helps. In the meantime, while we eagerly await the new season and its fresh plotline, let’s dive into our ranking.

10) The Immortal

Kicking off our rankings is none other than Abraham Lincoln, The Immortal – yes, the genuine article! Frequently a target for television humor, The Immortal has demonstrated himself to be an exceptional leader among the Guardians of the Globe. Despite his numerous deaths, he always returns, only to lose everyone he ever cares about. He may not be perfect, but beneath the centuries of pain from immortality lies a good man. Although his current efforts are often ridiculed, there’s no denying that he deserves his high position.

As The Immortal, stepping away from full-time heroics allowed for personal growth. Although he continued to save lives during this period, becoming a father gave him a greater sense of stability. He began to prioritize what truly mattered – his family, including Dupli-Kate, and reflecting on his feelings towards John Wilkes Booth, recognizing that the historical figure may not have met his end as traditionally believed.

9) Dupli-Kate

Regarding Dupli-Kate, she joins our list with a captivating presence, much like The Immortal. Interestingly enough, Kate’s development took a turn for the better once she transitioned away from full-time heroics. What sets her apart is that her abilities enable her to aid anyone, regardless of location, provided there’s travel and concentration. With a death count similar to or exceeding The Immortal’s, their bond was forged, creating an intriguing and unusual pair in the narrative.

Regarding Kate, she continues to spark debate among both comic and TV series enthusiasts. Yet, her worth in the industry is undeniable, as she’s highly capable of taking care of herself. In fact, she always keeps a backup version of herself safe for emergencies. This self-preservation skill ensures her survival no matter what. Although she might not be everyone’s favorite character, Kate is one of the most recognizable figures in Invincible.

8) Tech Jacket

In much the same vein as Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle character, Zack Thompson, also known as Tech Jacket, is a young individual who possesses a life-like suit or armor serving as his weapon. This protective gear shields him during space travel and guards him from severe injuries in combat. With the ability to engage in battles on par with the Viltrumites, Tech Jacket collaborates with Invincible and Omni-Man in later comic storylines revolving around the Viltrumites. Due to having his own comic series at the time, he often appears alongside Mark Grayson as a frequent ally and guest star.

In the comic series “Invincible,” Tech Jacket might not be the first hero that comes to mind, but he has certainly earned a place among cult favorites. Spanning three mini-series over a decade, he fought alongside Invincible. Although he may not have reached the same level of popularity, it’s safe to say that without him, Earth might not have withstood the Viltrumites. Indeed, Tech Jacket is an undeniably underrated character.

7) Robot

Initially, Robot was Earth’s most renowned hero, as depicted in the early books. However, his involvement in terrorist activities in later comic series has hindered his position here. Nevertheless, he is deserving of recognition due to his remarkable abilities. He had the capacity to manufacture a group of robots and mentally connect with them, thus controlling multiple entities simultaneously. This was much like Dupli-Kate, but Robot possessed slightly more capabilities than her, allowing him to be present in various locations concurrently.

In time, Robot, or Rex as he came to be known, assumed the position once held by Cecil Stedman. With his elevated status, he skillfully wielded power, yet it ultimately led to his corruption. Despite this, he remained a shrewd individual capable of managing things effectively. His creation of a new body using the DNA of Rex Splode was just one of many warning signs for him, and his character proved to be one of the most captivating in the series due to these intriguing traits.

6) Bulletproof

Initially introduced as a character parallel to Invincible’s, Bulletproof shares many of Mark Grayson’s abilities. Unlike Mark, who is a Viltrumite, the full extent of Bulletproof’s strength remains a mystery. However, we know that he can match up against some Viltrumites, showcasing his formidable power. Wearing the original costume designed by their shared tailor Art, Bulletproof proves to be independent. Initially, he had a minor role in the comics but gained significance as Mark delved deeper into space explorations.

Since Mark was off in space and Invincible was essential for Invincible Incorporated, Bulletproof decided to adopt the name Invincible. Although Bulletproof had significant potential to grow into an even larger character among the Guardians, he played a crucial role throughout the series. It’s wonderful to see that his importance is being recognized in the show as well.

5) Shapesmith

In our comic series, the character who brings laughter to the story is Shapesmith. Hailing from Mars following the sequid saga, Shapesmith shares a species with characters like Martian Man or the initial Guardians team members. Contrary to expectations of a stoic character like Martian Man, Shapesmith is quite different – he’s a complete goofball who struggles to grasp human culture. Despite his confusion, he has won over many readers due to his unique blend of characteristics, combining elements of Plastic Man, Warlock, and Martian Manhunter in an original way.

Amongst the esteemed ranks of the Guardians, I find myself admiring Shapesmith – though not for his raw power, he’s arguably one of our less formidable members. Yet, his unique abilities add an extraordinary depth to our group that truly sets him apart in the most endearing way. He may not be the conventional hero that we initially envisioned, but he undeniably embodies the spirit and qualities that make us appreciate him all the more.

4) Monster Girl

Initially, Monster Girl, a character in Invincible, was once romantically involved with Robot. Her narrative, however, is one of the saddest in the series. Due to her powers, she ages backwards, becoming younger each time she uses them, while her mind remains unchanged. This twist on a classic fairy tale theme introduces an element of sadness that was both surprising and fitting for the storyline of Invincible.

Following Robot’s guidance, she successfully halted the age regression process, ultimately restoring her to her original age, now wiser and more experienced. With a refreshed wardrobe and renewed sense of purpose, she emerged as a formidable force upon her and Robot’s return to Earth, earning the title of the new powerhouse among the Guardian team. Among the characters from Invincible, none arguably deserve a mini-series more than her.

3) Brit

In the latter part of the story, Brit – who bears resemblances to both Nick Fury and Captain America – assumes leadership of the Guardians. Following Immortal’s departure as leader, Brit was coaxed back from retirement by Cecil. Despite initially agreeing to lead temporarily, he found great success in this role and continued to guide the team through numerous escapades. Over time, Brit has starred in several mini-series and even headlined his own Guardians solo comic book series, solidifying his standing as one of the most prominent figures in the Invincible universe.

Through frequent shifts in the Guardians’ team, Brit consistently steered the group skillfully, adapting to various changes seamlessly. Although not the most flamboyant superhero, his extraordinary strength and gauntlets made him tough to overcome. Reminiscent of a grumpy grandfather, Brit is always prepared to engage in a fight at a moment’s notice.

2) Rex Splode

The widely adored, yet annoying protagonist, Rex Splode, transformed over time. Initially seen as an obnoxious loudmouth, he gradually won over everyone’s hearts as the story progressed, revealing his emotions more openly. After a mishap that led to the loss of his hand and a bullet wound to the brain, miraculously surviving, Rex underwent significant changes. Now, part-cyborg with the same abilities, he carries a sense of remorse for his past actions, marking a new chapter in Rex’s life.

In the “Invincible War,” Rex eventually made a self-sacrificing move that was deeply appreciated over time. His void was felt by every character, yet he remained a beloved hero with an exceptional run in the series. Transitioning to the show, Rex’s popularity endured as his tragic tale continued to resonate. Though he is no longer present, Rex will forever be remembered.

1) Atom Eve

Was anyone else supposed to join you? Atom Eve, a character from Invincible, stands out as one of the most powerful figures. With an inherent restriction in place to prevent her from being indestructible, Eve has managed to subdue any villain, sometimes even sacrificing her life in the process, only to resurrect shortly afterwards. As she mastered her abilities, the boundaries were gradually removed, paving the way for continued success over the years.

Eve is unique among love interests, sharing equal agency with the main character and potentially headlining her own show. Her character, drawing inspiration from Green Lantern’s powers and boasting a lively, multidimensional personality, remains as contemporary as today. Given the success of the series “Battle Beast,” it would be fantastic to see a series centered around Eve.
