The Jedi Code is a set of rules that defines what it means to be a Jedi in the Star Wars galaxy. It guides their lives, encouraging them to avoid close relationships and live simply. For many centuries, Jedi have followed this code, believing it’s the best way to connect with the light side of the Force. However, some of the most well-known and powerful Jedi throughout history have actually struggled with, or broken, its rules.
Whether motivated by love, obligation, or conflicting beliefs, these people broke the Jedi Code, and their choices often had devastating consequences for the entire galaxy.
1. Anakin Skywalker
From the very beginning, Anakin Skywalker wrestled with the Jedi’s fundamental principles. He secretly married Padmé Amidala, breaking one of their most important rules against forming attachments. This hidden love filled Anakin with constant worry and fear, as he tried to keep it a secret from the Jedi Council. His struggle to manage his feelings, combined with his terror of losing Padmé, ultimately led him to embrace the dark side.
Anakin Skywalker didn’t turn to the dark side simply because of love. His desire for power and his tendency to act impulsively played a big role too. He frequently took risks with his abilities – especially when flying – and often went ahead and did things without getting permission from the Jedi Council. He felt his power gave him the right to act as he pleased, and keeping his relationship with Padmé a secret led him to make choices that were more and more self-centered, gradually weakening his loyalty to the Jedi Order.
2. Qui-Gon Jinn
Qui-Gon Jinn was known for being independent and often questioned the Jedi Council’s decisions, sometimes ignoring them altogether. He preferred to follow his own understanding of the Force, which often clashed with the views of more traditional Jedi Masters. His insistence on training Anakin Skywalker, even though the Council forbade it, demonstrates both his strong will and the respect the Council had for him, allowing him a degree of freedom in his actions.
Qui-Gon Jinn felt a strong connection to young Anakin, which went against the Jedi rules prohibiting personal attachments. He was defined by his willingness to break with tradition and even the Jedi’s established rules, believing it was necessary for a greater purpose – fulfilling the prophecy and restoring balance to the Force. This independent spirit made him a distinctive, and often debated, figure within the Jedi Order.
3. Quinlan Vos
Quinlan Vos was a unique Jedi Master, often distinguished from his peers – sometimes for the wrong reasons. He possessed a rare Force ability called psychometry, allowing him to learn about a person by experiencing their memories and emotions through objects or direct contact. However, this gift frequently led him into morally grey areas and trouble with the law. His habit of collaborating with criminals and bounty hunters to gather intelligence concerned other Jedi, who preferred more conventional methods.
His path led him to the edge of the dark side, and he briefly succumbed to it during a mission to kill Count Dooku. The Jedi Council authorized this mission fully aware of Quinlan’s tendencies and past. He consistently operated in a gray area, stretching the limits of what was considered appropriate Jedi behavior.
4. Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka Tano completely severed ties with the Jedi Order after a difficult ordeal. She was wrongly accused of bombing the Jedi Temple and faced expulsion, but Anakin discovered the true culprit just in time, clearing her name. Though the Jedi Council offered her a chance to rejoin, Ahsoka chose to leave, having lost faith in an institution that she felt had betrayed her.
Ahsoka left the Jedi Order because she felt it had lost its direction – a point even her enemy, Darth Maul, recognized. She believed the Jedi’s rigid rules and the Council’s unwillingness to question them were holding them back. Choosing her own path, she became a beacon of hope and worked to improve the galaxy in ways the Order wouldn’t.
5. Kanan Jarrus
Caleb Dume, later known as Kanan Jarrus, was one of the few Jedi who survived the devastating Order 66. After watching his master give her life to save him, he decided to leave behind the traditional Jedi ways, even though he was still a Padawan. He created a new life for himself and eventually became close to the crew of the *Ghost*, especially Hera Syndulla and Ezra Bridger, allowing himself to form meaningful relationships.
Kanan didn’t discourage Ezra from forming bonds with others, believing that love and connection weren’t weaknesses, but strengths. His own family gave him a reason to fight, and his apprentice would carry on that spirit. Kanan showed that strong personal relationships could be a force for good, even outside the strict rules of the Jedi Order.
6. Mace Windu
Mace Windu was a skilled lightsaber fighter who specialized in a rare technique called Vaapad. This style allowed him to harness his own anger and dark impulses, transforming them into a force for good. However, Vaapad was incredibly risky, demanding that a Jedi carefully balance the line between light and darkness – a boundary most Jedi avoided due to the potential consequences.
Mace Windu intentionally used a dangerous and unconventional fighting style, openly breaking the Jedi Code’s rules against aggression and maintaining inner peace. He knowingly risked using dark side techniques to gain an advantage in combat. This willingness to go further than other Jedi demonstrated his conviction that protecting the Republic sometimes required drastic actions.
7. Pong Krell
General Pong Krell committed a severe betrayal by violating the Jedi Code and turning against the clone troopers and the Republic he was supposed to protect. He shockingly revealed he was working with the Separatists, directly betraying the soldiers under his command. This act was a complete abandonment of his Jedi values and his responsibilities.
Krell turned against the Jedi because he thought they were going to lose the war and believed the Separatists had a stronger leader. Driven by his own pride and a lack of concern for his soldiers, he became known as one of the Jedi Order’s most notorious traitors.
8. Etain Tur-Mukan
Etain Tur-Mukan was a Jedi during the Clone Wars who made a controversial decision: she fell in love with a clone trooper named Darman Skirata and had a child with him. This broke the Jedi Code, which forbade personal attachments and relationships. Etain ultimately prioritized her family over her obligations to the Jedi Order.
Etain deliberately chose to focus on her happiness and the well-being of her family – Darman and their son, Venku – even if it meant going against the Jedi Code, which had existed for centuries. Her story proves that Jedi don’t need to be detached to be strong; in fact, her relationships with loved ones were what drove her the most.
9. Count Dooku
Count Dooku’s opposition to the established order started well before he turned to the dark side. While still a Jedi, he openly questioned the Jedi Council’s close relationship with the Republic’s increasingly corrupt government. He believed the Jedi had drifted from their original purpose, acting more like politicians than guardians of peace. His growing dissatisfaction with the Jedi Order wasn’t sudden; it developed gradually as he carefully considered the problems and tried to find solutions from within.
Leaving the Jedi Order wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment choice; it was a complete break with everything they believed in. He felt the Jedi were full of contradictions and weren’t getting anything done, and by leaving, he made it clear he couldn’t support their ways anymore. He then used his considerable abilities to follow his own path, eventually becoming a Sith Lord.
10. Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s biggest departure from Jedi teachings was his choice to train Anakin Skywalker. He’d made a deathbed promise to his master, Qui-Gon Jinn, to do so, and felt strongly obligated to keep it. This dedication meant forming an attachment – something the Jedi Council had specifically forbidden with Anakin, and thus, directly disobeying their orders.
He valued fulfilling his master’s final request above all else, even the rules of the Order he’d devoted his life to. This one act of disobedience changed his destiny, linking it with Anakin’s and eventually transforming him into a legendary hero and unwavering protector of the galaxy.
