Marvel Comics is known for its incredibly powerful characters, but it’s interesting to note that many of them weren’t always so strong. When Marvel first introduced its superheroes in the 1960s, their abilities – like a teenager gaining spider-like powers or a man transforming into a green monster due to radiation – were groundbreaking. However, both the fans and the comic creators were discovering these powers for the first time, and over time, different creative teams found ways to expand and refine those abilities beyond what was originally shown.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve noticed something really cool – a lot of our favorite heroes have gotten way more powerful over the years! I’ve been thinking about it, and here’s my list of 10 characters who are noticeably stronger now than when they first hit the scene. It’s amazing to see how they’ve grown and evolved!
10) Wonder Man

Wonder Man debuted in Avengers #9 in 1964, gaining his superhuman strength and resilience from a machine created by Baron Zemo. He initially died after switching sides to help the Avengers. However, he was later brought back to life, and evolved beyond a simple powerhouse. Over time, Wonder Man’s powers have grown to include being made of ionic energy, leading to questions about whether he’s truly flesh and blood, or just pure energy. Now, he’s virtually indestructible, can control energy, and may even be immortal.
9) Magik

Illyana Rasputina began her journey in Marvel Comics as a powerless child. At age six, she was kidnapped by the demon Belasco and held captive in Limbo for seven years. Though she physically returned almost immediately, she reappeared as a thirteen-year-old, the same age as Kitty Pryde. Illyana is a mutant who can create teleportation discs, allowing her to travel instantly to any location, even other dimensions. She also developed magical abilities during her time in Limbo. Over time, Illyana’s magical powers have grown significantly, and she now holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo, making her far more powerful than when she was part of the New Mutants.
8) Monica Rambeau

I’ve been a huge fan of Monica Rambeau for years! She started as a harbor patrol lieutenant in New Orleans, but she’d actually had the ability to control light since she was a kid. She really came into her own when she stopped a terrorist attack by destroying the equipment with her bare hands – it was incredible! That’s when she decided to become a superhero, taking on the name Captain Marvel and leaving the Navy. Eventually, she even became an Avenger! But what’s really amazing is that she’s evolved beyond just light control. Now, she can manipulate any kind of energy and reshape it into almost anything! That makes her one of the most powerful heroes Marvel has, in my opinion.
7) Iceman

The first X-Men weren’t initially incredibly powerful; they were still developing their abilities. Over time, each of the original team members grew much stronger, and Iceman became one of the most powerful. Early on, Iceman’s powers were depicted as controlling snow – he’d throw snowballs and create ice sleds – a far cry from his true potential. Iceman is an Omega-level mutant, meaning he’s capable of incredible feats, like freezing the entire planet or instantly stopping someone’s heart by freezing their blood. He’s also nearly immortal, able to reform his body from water even if it’s destroyed.
6) Thor

Thor has always been a strong hero, but his power has grown dramatically over the last twenty years. Initially, he was a formidable god with control over lightning and a powerful weapon, Mjolnir, making him one of the strongest members of the original Avengers. However, after becoming King of Asgard and gaining the Odinforce, his power reached nearly limitless levels. He even accomplished what was once impossible – defeating Galactus, a feat he couldn’t have managed earlier in his career.
5) Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch began her comic book appearances in The X-Men as a villain, part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Initially, she showed promise with her use of Chaos Magic, but her true power developed over time. As an Avenger, she repeatedly became a danger on a global scale, sometimes due to manipulation and other times because of losing control of her feelings, as seen in storylines like Avengers Disassembled and House of M. She became so powerful that the Avengers and X-Men almost decided to eliminate her to protect everyone. Now, as the Sorcerer Supreme, Wanda is considered Earth’s most powerful magic user.
4) The Incredible Hulk

When the Hulk first appeared in Marvel comics, he was a tremendously powerful, destructive force – so powerful, in fact, that he was the main reason the Avengers team came together, as no single hero could defeat him. While Thor might have had a chance, Hulk was already stronger at that time, though he would become even more powerful later on. Initially, Hulk was simply a rampaging monster, causing destruction wherever he went. But now, he’s become Marvel’s strongest hero, destined to survive even the end of time. His strength increases with his anger, making him potentially unbeatable – a far cry from his earlier depictions in the first twenty years of Marvel comics.
3) The Invisible Woman

Early Marvel Comics often portrayed its female characters in a stereotypical way. Characters like Wasp and the Invisible Girl were frequently depicted as being more interested in socializing and shopping than in fighting crime. Thankfully, these characters have evolved significantly over time. The Invisible Girl, initially known for invisibility and force fields, proved to be incredibly powerful – even more so than some of her Fantastic Four teammates. She demonstrated her strength by defeating powerful villains like Doctor Doom with her precise control over force fields, and even possessing the ability to be lethal with them.
2) Jean Grey

Jean Grey began her journey with the X-Men as a telekinetic, able to move objects with her mind, which made her a valuable asset in battles. Over time, her abilities expanded far beyond that initial power. She discovered she was also a psychic, but Professor X had suppressed these abilities, keeping her unaware of them. When the powerful Phoenix Force bonded with her, her powers grew exponentially. Today, Jean Grey is considered Marvel’s most powerful psychic, and her connection to the Phoenix Force makes her a formidable, potentially universe-altering force.
1) Carol Danvers

Carol Danvers began as a human Air Force member and friend to Captain Mar-Vell during his time on Earth. An accident while working with him granted her superpowers, and she became known as Ms. Marvel. Initially, her abilities mirrored Captain Mar-Vell’s, but they were significantly amplified when she was captured and experimented on by Brood scientists. This experimentation allowed her to absorb and redirect various forms of energy, making her one of the most powerful heroes in the universe.
