10 Marvel Characters Who Deserve an “Immortal” Book

For years, Marvel has been the top-selling publisher of superhero comics, consistently outselling its competitors. However, despite its sales success, many argue that Marvel isn’t currently producing the *best* superhero comics. While there are issues with many of their titles, recent books like *The Immortal Hulk*, *Immortal X-Men*, and *The Immortal Thor* (along with *Immortal Iron Fist*, though it stands apart) have been exceptional. These titles stand out because they focus heavily on character development, creatively expand upon established lore for Hulk, Thor, and the X-Men, and take those stories in exciting new directions, making them a clear step above the rest of Marvel’s lineup.

As a huge Marvel fan, I was blown away by Al Ewing’s work on *The Immortal Hulk* and *The Immortal Thor*, and Kieron Gillen really nailed *Immortal X-Men*. It’s got me thinking – everyone’s clamoring for that ‘Immortal’ treatment for their favorite characters, and honestly, I agree! I’ve been putting together a list of ten Marvel heroes and teams who *deserve* their own ‘Immortal’ series, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed we see it happen.

10) Storm

The X-Men are home to many incredible heroes, and Storm is easily one of the most powerful. Known as a ‘goddess’ for her ability to control the weather, Storm has a unique lineage tied to deities and has even briefly held the power of Eternity. While she recently received her own solo series as part of the X-Men’s ‘From the Ashes’ relaunch, it largely focused on demonstrating her power level rather than developing her character. Storm deserves a story that truly explores her identity as an individual hero, and an ‘Immortal’ series would be a great way to do that. Al Ewing’s writing in *X-Men Red* showcased her beautifully, and giving him the opportunity to write an *Immortal Storm* book would be fantastic.

9) Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers, who began her career as Ms. Marvel, is a major hero in the Marvel Universe. She’s become a key member of the Avengers and taken on the legacy of her mentor, Mar-Vell, evolving into one of Marvel’s most powerful characters. While Captain Marvel has starred in many comic series, fans particularly love the runs written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Kelly Thompson. A new, defining series focusing on the idea of an ‘Immortal Captain Marvel’ could be just what the character needs. The concept also allows for deeper exploration of the Captain Marvel identity, considering the various heroes who have held the title over the years. There’s huge potential for exciting stories with this approach.

8) Fantastic Four

With the Fantastic Four now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the team has been thriving under writer Ryan North. As the team that launched Marvel’s Silver Age, their unique blend of family life and science fiction remains incredibly compelling. What’s especially exciting about the current run is the multi-generational family dynamic, including the Richards children and the adopted Kree and Skrull kids. A series focusing on the team’s lasting legacy across time could really highlight this. The Fantastic Four deserve to reclaim their position as Marvel’s leading team, and a long-form, generational story could be the key to achieving that.

7) Iron Man

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned Iron Man into a global icon, that success hasn’t translated to the comic books. The Iron Man comics haven’t been truly exceptional since 2008, around the time the MCU began, and when Matt Fraction was writing the series. There have been some decent runs lately, but none stand out as all-time greats. Iron Man fans deserve a truly outstanding series, and a book similar to *The Immortal Hulk* could deliver that. Like *The Immortal Hulk* revitalized the Hulk character, a new, highly-rated Iron Man series could be a flagship title that comic fans could confidently recommend to fans of the movies.

6) Captain America

Captain America has a long and celebrated history, first appearing as a hugely popular Marvel hero in the 1940s. His return in the 1960s played a key role in Marvel’s resurgence, and he’s remained a central leader ever since. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made him a widely recognized figure, and he’s been featured in many excellent comic book storylines this century—the current run by Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti is particularly noteworthy. A series exploring Captain America’s enduring legacy—an “Immortal” book—would be a great fit, offering the kind of compelling story about the heart of America that fans expect from his comics. Captain America truly represents the best of Marvel, and an “Immortal” series would be perfect for showcasing his character.

5) Silver Surfer

Stan Lee, a co-creator of the Silver Surfer, always considered him a favorite, and the character deserves more attention. While the Silver Surfer has appeared in several excellent limited series – particularly one run by Dan Slott, Mike Allred, and Laura Allred – he hasn’t had a major solo comic in a while. He has all the potential to be a hugely popular character, but needs Marvel to fully support a new ongoing series. A book like “Immortal Hulk” would be the perfect way to give him that boost.

4) Spider-Man

Spider-Man remains Marvel’s most beloved hero, but his recent comic book storylines haven’t always lived up to expectations, particularly since the 2007 event “One More Day.” Fans have been hoping for a comic that truly satisfies everyone, and a storyline focusing on Spider-Man’s connection to a mystical spider energy – an “Immortal” book – could be the answer. This approach would be a fresh direction, avoiding the missteps Marvel has made with the character in recent years. While *Ultimate Spider-Man* was a positive move, Spider-Man needs a significant revitalization, and this “Immortal” concept could be just what he needs.

3) Hercules

Hercules is a fantastic Marvel character, but he often plays a supporting role instead of leading the charge. While he frequently joins teams like the Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy, or appears in other heroes’ stories – like those of Thor or Hulk – he’s never had his own major, headlining comic series. A new series called “Immortal” could finally change that. Hercules has a deep and fascinating backstory, drawing from both comic books and ancient myths, and it’s time that history was fully explored. With a little effort from Marvel, Hercules could become a major star, and this series would prove they’re committed to making that happen.

2) Moon Knight

Thanks to writer Jed MacKay, Moon Knight has become incredibly popular in recent years. MacKay skillfully blended all facets of the character, resulting in comics that have resonated with Marvel fans and earned widespread praise – some of the best Marvel has offered this century. Many believe Moon Knight is ready to reach the level of Batman, and a new “Immortal” series could be the key. Keeping MacKay as the writer, potentially with artist Alessandro Cappuccio, and heavily promoting the book could finally elevate Moon Knight from a B-list favorite to a true Marvel superstar.

1) Wolverine

Wolverine deserves his own ‘Immortal’ series. Despite recent sales declines, he remains incredibly popular, especially now that Hugh Jackman is playing him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with *Deadpool & Wolverine*. The concept perfectly suits the character – he *is* immortal! Plus, his rich backstory and impressive collection of villains offer endless story potential. Imagine Al Ewing writing an *Immortal Wolverine* book – the possibilities are exciting. What Wolverine really needs is a creative team of top-tier writers and artists – the book hasn’t had that since the work of Mark Millar and Greg Rucka. Jason Aaron and Benjamin Percy only became major names *after* writing *Wolverine*. An ‘Immortal Wolverine’ series could deliver a more compelling experience than the current *Wolverine* (Vol. 8) title.
