10 Marvel Villains Insomniac Needs to Use in the Next Spider-Man Game

The three Spider-Man games developed by Insomniac Games have been exceptional, but they could have made a significant oversight. Each game includes a vast number of enemies (villains), making it difficult to reuse them in future installments. As a result, Insomniac may need to think outside the box. They’ve already used many famous villains such as Doctor Octopus, Venom, Kraven, Mysterio, the Prowler, Tombstone, the Lizard, Sandman, Mister Negative, Vulture, Electro, Kingpin, and several others. However, there are still 10 potential villains for Spider-Man 3 or future games to explore. Although the list is small compared to their previous choices, it’s a solid starting point.

10. Green Goblin

It’s surprising that Green Goblin, a well-known Spider-Man villain associated with Norman Osborn, hasn’t been introduced in any game yet. However, the ending of Spider-Man 2 seems to hint at his potential appearance. Introducing Goblin’s glider in Spider-Man 3 could bring a new dimension to aerial combat, as the series hasn’t explored this aspect before. Moreover, Norman Osborn’s transformation into the Green Goblin could have more impact after numerous games where he was portrayed as a regular or even questionable character.

9. New Goblin

It’s quite intriguing to imagine that the third installment of a Spider-Man series could successfully introduce a villain which the third film in the original trilogy struggled with – the New Goblin. The portrayal of this character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was not well-received, but in this context, it might fit perfectly. Given Harry’s deteriorating health, what if the goblin serum could miraculously save him? Considering Norman’s previous attempts to save his son using Venom, despite a degenerative illness, such an attempt wouldn’t be out of character. However, this action could lead to the creation of another formidable adversary. Narratively speaking, it would be compelling to observe Peter Parker facing off against his former friend again, especially after successfully rescuing him once before. In this scenario, Harry might not even offer Peter the chance to save him this time around.

8. Hydro Man

Hydro Man could work well as a secondary antagonist instead of the main one in the game, given Insomniac’s penchant for utilizing interesting side villains. Although Hydro Man is quite an old and iconic Spider-Man adversary, he isn’t often featured prominently. Having him in the game would pay homage to the comics and offer a unique kind of villain, complete with water-based powers that could potentially spark modifications or upgrades for Spidey’s suit.

7. The Chameleon

Just as Norman Osborn’s transformation into the Green Goblin sets the stage for his return in Spider-Man 3, introducing the Chameleon seems fitting. At the end of the second movie, it was revealed that the Chameleon is Kraven’s half-brother, and since Kraven has perished, the Chameleon seeks vengeance. However, his presence also offers an opportunity to revisit classic villains. Given that Kraven disposed of many antagonists, this could serve as a method to “bring them back.” This scenario would also offer intriguing character development for Peter, as he confronts enemies he believed were eradicated, particularly those with whom he has some sort of bond.

6. The Spot

In a potential third Spider-Man game by Insomniac, The Spot might make an engaging antagonist. With his multiversal powers, the developers could leverage ideas originally intended for the abandoned Spider-Verse game. This could lead to Peter Parker traversing various New Yorks, encountering villains presumed dead, thereby injecting a heavy emotional component into the narrative. Moreover, neither Spider-Man nor Miles Morales have previously faced adversaries who pose an existential threat of this kind.

5. Morbius

The movie Morbius, featuring Jared Leto, isn’t just a bad film, but rather an intriguing character that interacts with Spider-Man in the comics and other media. He’s more like a tragic antagonist, struggling to cope with his new vampire-like condition. This conflict has always been engaging for Spider-Man, making it exciting to see it played out in a game. It could also pave the way for Blade, who is set to have his own game soon, and potentially introduce other Marvel heroes as well. If done correctly, this approach could allow Insomniac to expand beyond Spider-Man and the upcoming Wolverine game, exploring new territories in the Marvel universe.

4. Hobgoblin

In a nod to variety and intrigue, it’s worth considering that while the Green Goblin is undeniably famous, he might not be the most terrifying goblin-themed adversary Spider-Man has encountered. Imagine if game developers Insomniac Games were to delve deeper into this theme, creating a standalone game featuring not only the Green Goblin but also his successors like New Goblin and Hobgoblin. The latter often draws inspiration from the Green Goblin, making a compelling narrative for them both to be protagonists.

It would add an interesting layer to have Spider-Man believe he’s merely confronting another Osborn in a costume, only to discover who’s behind the mask is someone unexpected – possibly one of the supporting characters from their previous games. To top it off, introducing a surprising twist would certainly enhance the game’s enjoyment and replay value.

3. Riot

Incorporating the character Venom implies that symbiotes are part of this universe, likely including Earth. This sets up numerous opportunities for villains in a potential future Spider-Man game. Since Riot is a more menacing symbiote than Venom, he could pose an even greater danger. With ties to the Life Foundation, this could be an effective way to reintroduce Venom and position him as an anti-hero, potentially leading into the rumored standalone game speculated after Spider-Man 2.

2. Carnage

As a devoted gamer, I can’t help but speculate about potential developments in the Spider-Man universe. The symbiotes are intriguing, and it seems like Insomniac might have been hinting at some exciting DLC featuring Carnage. In Spider-Man 2, Cletus Kasady took on the role of The Flame, setting the stage for his transformation into Carnage, given his cult activities.

This fresh take on his origin story was captivating, and I can’t help but feel that this character deserves more screen time to truly showcase his potential. Unlike Venom, Carnage would present a formidable challenge for Spider-Man, one that could potentially lead to New York being devastated if not handled carefully. Fingers crossed we get to see him in action!

1. Morlun

Among the less prominent Marvel antagonists, Morlun is one who frequently crosses paths with Spider-Man and potentially poses the greatest threat. This enigmatic character, often referred to as a vampiric entity, traverses various universes in search of “totems” – superheroes symbolized by animals. Notably, he prefers to prey on various iterations of Spider-Man. Morlun could prove to be an exciting nemesis, particularly in a game where The Spot is present, as he could have already been feeding in alternate realities that The Spot’s ability to open doors from New York City might reveal.
