For several decades, sitcoms have graced our screens with an array of settings, families, and characters that have given life to some of the most celebrated titles within the genre. Many iconic TV sitcoms have left an indelible mark in pop culture, becoming timeless classics due to their unique humor, emotional impact, and ability to evoke laughter and tears from viewers. While many sitcom characters are cherished by audiences, there are also some that are met with widespread dislike.
In certain sitcoms, characters may be intentionally designed to be dislikable. Yet, other characters can stir up disdain for reasons beyond their character traits. Sometimes, audience reactions to storylines can lead to consequences for the actors portraying these characters. Nevertheless, regardless of the root cause, there are undeniably some sitcom characters who are universally regarded as unbearable, annoying, or self-centered. These individuals have earned a place among the most detested in the world of sitcoms.
1) Steve Urkel (Family Matters)
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’d say Steve Urkel is a classic character who’s known by many beyond the realm of Family Matters – even if they haven’t watched an episode. Portrayed brilliantly by Jaleel White in this sitcom, Urkel initially came across as the bothersome neighbor to the Winslow family. But his charm with viewers transformed him into the main character, despite his ongoing ability to be quite irritating.
From the outset, the character of Urkel was designed to be as irritating as possible, which is why he’s bound to have his fair share of detractors. With his grating voice, peculiar habits, and grating personality, Steve Urkel is a character that many people find difficult to like. Given that this was the intended goal for the character, it speaks volumes about Jaleel White’s acting abilities, but it doesn’t make him any more endearing.
Steve Urkel was created with the intention of being annoying from the start, and as a result, he has attracted his share of critics. His high-pitched voice, quirky behavior, and off-putting demeanor make him a character that people often dislike. Even though this was the desired effect for the character, it’s a testament to Jaleel White’s acting skills, but it doesn’t make him any more likable in the eyes of viewers.
2) Jian-Yang (Silicon Valley)
In addition to being a lesser-known television comedy series, “Silicon Valley” is known for its unappealing characters, with one exception: Jian-Yang, portrayed by Jimmy O. Yang. Unlike his fellow characters in the show, Jian-Yang often clashes with the main protagonist and his associates. Initially appearing as a recurring character in the first season, Jian-Yang was promoted to a regular role from seasons two through six.
As a follower, I’d say it’s Jian-Yang’s unique way of not adhering to standard social norms or common courtesies that makes him so extremely disliked. His character portrays racist views, enjoys causing distress to several show characters, and even went as far as evicting them in the dead of night. But nothing compares to the moment when he was seen pouring milk into a trash can, which really highlights what an odd and unpleasant character he truly is.
3) Donna Pinciotti (That ‘70s Show)
In simpler terms, on the TV series That ’70s Show, none of the principal characters were perfect and they each had their flaws. The show managed to make most of the characters’ negative traits appealing in some way, but it failed to make one of its main cast members likable. Donna Pinciotti, portrayed by Laura Prepon, is a significant character who shares a relationship with Eric Forman, and plays an important role in the series. However, many viewers find her easy to dislike.
In simpler terms, Donna is often seen as the least favorite character on the show because she frequently mistreats Eric, her boyfriend, in many aspects, displaying emotionally manipulative behavior towards the kind-hearted Forman. Her behavior often comes across as demanding and unreasonable, making viewers dislike her due to a lack of endearing qualities.
4) Ida Welker (Malcolm in the Middle)
One way to rephrase the given text could be: In “Malcolm in the Middle,” several characters were unforgettably wretched, but none more so than Ida, Lois’ mother, who is remarkably annoying. On the contrary, she stands out among a group of unpleasant characters due to her absence of endearing qualities, even if her character is amusingly loathsome. As a result, Ida has become one of the most despised recurring characters on the show.
5) Leonard Hofstadter (The Big Bang Theory)
The popular TV series “The Big Bang Theory” is known for its humor and guest appearances, but it’s one of the main characters that often draws criticism. Initially, the show centered around a group of scientists and their struggles with relationships. However, as the series progressed, Leonard became increasingly unpopular among fans due to his persistent issues in forming and maintaining healthy relationships, unlike the other characters who grew and improved over time.
During the series of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard frequently displayed signs of jealousy, pettiness, and obsession, particularly towards his girlfriend Penny (later his wife), but also towards his friends and other romantic interests. His behavior often involved mistreating and disregarding Penny, which led many viewers to question whether he truly deserved her. Unlike the other characters who had believable explanations for their social challenges, Leonard was portrayed as a self-loathing individual with an unkind demeanor, causing some fans to strongly dislike his character.
6) Screech Powers (Saved by the Bell)
The classic series “Saved by the Bell” continues to hold a special place in the hearts of viewers even after it finished airing, with numerous characters from the cast staying etched in our minds. However, one character that has not escaped criticism is Screech Powers, portrayed by Dustin Diamond. Screech is among the select few characters who appeared throughout the show’s various adaptations, and he was first presented as the less popular sidekick of Zach Morris, often serving him in a subservient role.
Since his debut, Screech consistently grated on viewers due to his quirks and clumsiness. His social awkwardness, peculiar habits, and frequent blunders made him a nuisance for many fans. Given that Screech was primarily employed as comic relief and a contrast to the show’s more popular characters, he frequently became the target of jokes on Saved by the Bell, which did little to boost his appeal. Even Dustin Diamond, who played Screech, had complex feelings about the character, believing that his portrayal of Screech may have hindered his acting advancement.
7) Simon Moon (Frasier)
While numerous sitcom characters could benefit from their own spin-offs, only a select few receive the chance for secondary acclaim, like Frasier did. The spin-off show based on the Cheers character was incredibly successful, yet it wasn’t without its share of disliked characters. One such character is Simon Moon, Daphne Moon’s live-in physical therapist brother, portrayed by Australian actor Anthony LaPaglia. In Frasier, he is often viewed as one of the most despised characters.
Apart from his constant habit of telling unamusing jokes and engaging in reckless and immature tricks that annoy everyone around, Simon Moon is, in essence, an unpleasant individual. He exhibits poor manners, ingratitude, and generally behaves rudely. His family members, friends, and loved ones often experience his disrespectful behavior. Moreover, his British accent, which some find grating to watch, particularly UK fans of the show Frasier, adds fuel to the fire, making him even less liked than one would expect based on his character alone.
8) Pierce Hawthorne (Community)
In the popular TV series “Community,” Pierce Hawthorne, portrayed by Chevy Chase, often stole the spotlight, yet wasn’t necessarily the standout character in the show’s finest moments. From the first episode to the fifth season, Pierce was a staple of the central study group and a main cast member. Known for his chaotic and unpredictable behavior, Pierce was usually the cause of internal conflicts within the group.
The intense dislike for Pierce can be attributed to both his portrayal as an offensive, biased character on screen and subsequent accounts of Chevy Chase’s challenging demeanor off-screen during filming. Pierce is written as a complex individual, harboring deep insecurities that he often addresses by manipulating others. Furthermore, allegations of Chase being hard to collaborate with behind the scenes contributed to the deterioration of audience sentiment towards the character, who often navigated a thin line between questionable moral standards.
9) Newman (Seinfeld)
The television series “Seinfeld” was known for creating characters that were often hard to root for. However, certain personalities shone brighter than others, with Jerry’s neighbor Newman being one of the standouts. Portrayed by Wayne Knight, Newman is a neighbor and associate of Kramer who has a strong disdain towards Jerry and frequently plots against him.
Despite Newman’s irritating demeanor often causing friction, it was his underhanded tactics and disregard for others that made him one of the most detested characters on the show. Whenever he appeared, it was usually to aggravate, disturb, or create turmoil for other characters. The comedic yet clumsy portrayal by Knight brilliantly encapsulated Newman’s unappealing persona. Even among a cast of dislikable characters, Newman stood out as the most loathsome.
10) Ross Geller (Friends)
As a devoted movie critic, I must confess, there’s no denying the phenomenal success of the sitcom, Friends. Spanning an impressive 10 seasons and setting numerous records during its run, the show’s impact on pop culture is undeniable. Yet, among its charming ensemble, one character seemed to fall short in terms of likeability compared to his fellow stars. Over time, even as the years pass since the series finale, Ross Geller has become the Friends character that many fans find themselves reluctantly hating.
Throughout the series, Ross frequently found himself in storylines that didn’t exactly paint him in a favorable light. He often displayed traits such as selfishness, jealousy, obsession, and prejudice. Moreover, there were instances where he performed actions that many would deem morally questionable at best. While Ross’ self-centered personality was typically used for comedic effect, it now appears more troubling in retrospect, leading Ross to be the character most disliked by fans of the show.
