The X-Men are a hugely popular team, and for good reason. They’ve consistently delivered great stories, memorable heroes and villains, and a rich, detailed history that fans appreciate. But one of the biggest factors in their success is surprisingly simple: their costumes. The X-Men are known for having some of the most iconic and well-designed outfits in comic book history. These looks weren’t just visually striking; they helped define the characters and grab readers’ attention. Over the years, the X-Men have consistently showcased truly brilliant fashion.
The X-Men have had many memorable costumes over the years, but only a few truly stand out as iconic. These are the outfits that immediately come to mind when you picture the characters, and the X-Men’s history is full of them. Here are ten of the most iconic X-Men costumes, looks that have become legendary in comic books.
10) Magneto’s Classic Costume

Magneto is a fascinating character who has changed a lot over the years, but one thing remains constant: his incredible costumes. Max Eisenhardt always delivers when it comes to his look, and his very first costume is arguably his best. Designed by Jack Kirby and refined by some of the greatest comic book artists, this red and purple outfit is truly iconic. Everything from the helmet to the cape and the color scheme makes it a work of art.
9) Original Jubilee

Jubilee quickly became a popular character with fans in the 1990s, and from the start, she had a fantastic costume. Artist Marc Silvestri designed her look to reflect the late 1980s mall culture, and it really captured the vibe. The colors were striking, her oversized glasses were a perfect touch, and the outfit immediately conveyed her personality. This original costume was featured on X-Men: The Animated Series and remains a fan favorite today – in fact, her current costume is based on it. (It’s worth noting her Generation X costume was also excellent; Jubilee has consistently had great designs.)
8) Original Archangel Costume

Okay, let’s talk Archangel’s look. He’s been around since the beginning of the X-Men, but honestly, he’s always felt a little underrated. But his costumes? Often fantastic! And the very first one, designed by Walt Simonson, is the one that really sticks with me. It was a total departure from his previous angelic look – a bold blue and purple that just felt…cool. He eventually ditched the skull mask after dealing with some serious Apocalypse programming over in X-Factor, but the core of that costume stayed with him for years. Even when he briefly went back to his classic blue and white Angel outfit in the ’90s, he kept circling back to elements of that original design. It’s a testament to how truly iconic it is – it’s clearly a look that defines the character.
7) ’90 Yellow and Blue Costumes

The X-Men were incredibly popular in the 1990s, largely thanks to their striking artwork. Character designs, especially costumes, went through many changes at the start of the decade. Eventually, artist Jim Lee designed a new team uniform – a modernized take on the classic yellow and blue costumes from the early days of the X-Men. These costumes looked great and have influenced every X-Men team look since. The cover of Uncanny X-Men #375 perfectly showcases this iconic design.
6) The Original Gambit Costume

Gambit quickly became a fan favorite among the X-Men, and a lot of that popularity stemmed from his distinctive look, designed by Jim Lee. His costume, featuring a now-famous head sock (originally inspired by the character Firestorm), instantly became iconic and is still widely copied by artists today. The trench coat added a dynamic flair, emphasizing Gambit’s agility in illustrations. With its striking colors and overall design, the costume was incredibly memorable. It’s so beloved that Gambit frequently returns to variations of it, proving just how iconic it has become.
5) Jim Lee Rogue Costume

Rogue is known for her great outfits, but one stands out above the rest: the design by Jim Lee, who created many of the most famous X-Men costumes. This outfit perfectly captured her look by combining her signature green color with yellow and a cool leather jacket. The addition of a belt completed the look, creating a visually striking costume that also served a practical purpose – protecting her from unwanted physical contact. It’s a truly memorable design that fans continue to love.
4) Original Phoenix Costume

As a lifelong X-Men fan, I have to say Jean Grey’s always had fantastic costume designs – seriously, there aren’t any real duds in the bunch. While a lot of people immediately think of the Jim Lee look from the ’90s, thanks to the cartoon, for me, it’s always been the original Phoenix costume, created by Dave Cockrum. It took the green and gold from her earlier outfit and turned it into this incredible bodysuit with a really striking logo and amazing thigh-high boots. That sash just makes the whole thing, and it’s honestly a favorite look for pretty much anyone who’s ever seen it.
3) Storm’s ’90s Silver Costume

Choosing Storm’s best costume was tough – she’s had so many great looks! While her original and punk rock outfits are fantastic, the silver costume she debuted after the 1991 X-Men relaunch is the most recognizable and beloved. It’s a variation of her late 80s black suit and gained huge popularity thanks to X-Men: The Animated Series. It’s a sleek, uncomplicated design that still looks amazing, even the shoulder pads, despite being a style from the past.
2) Yellow and Blue Wolverine Costume

Wolverine is renowned for his skills, and that extends to his memorable outfits. While he’s sported many great costumes throughout the comics, the classic yellow and blue design is by far the most iconic. Originally created by John Romita Sr. and later refined by Dave Cockrum for Giant-Size X-Men #1, Wolverine wore this suit until the early 1980s when John Byrne introduced a brown and orange alternative. Despite not necessarily being the best costume, the yellow and blue look became widely popular in the 1990s – when the character reached peak recognition – cementing its status as his most recognizable outfit.
1) ’90s Jim Lee Cyclops Costume

Cyclops has had many great looks over the years, but one costume stands out as truly iconic: the blue and yellow suit designed by Jim Lee. While some comic book fans might prefer his second costume, the blue and yellow version is what most people remember. This is the outfit he wore in the hugely popular X-Men (Vol. 2) #1 and in the X-Men: The Animated Series. He wore it for about ten years, until 2001. It’s become the definitive Cyclops look, and when a similar design appeared in the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, fans were incredibly excited.
