10 Most Powerful Alternative Versions of Batman, Ranked

Although Batman doesn’t have superpowers, he’s remarkably powerful. His strategic mind, peak physical fitness, advanced technology, and detective skills make him a major player in the DC universe. This allows him to fight alongside—and even compete with—powerhouses like Superman and Wonder Woman, and face down frightening enemies.

The Batman we know from the main DC comics isn’t the only one. Because the DC Multiverse is so expansive, many different versions of Batman exist, and some are even stronger – and much scarier. Here’s a look at 10 of the most powerful alternate Batmans from across the DC Multiverse.

10) White Lantern Batman

Batman has briefly become a White Lantern in comic books, most notably in Batman Universe #5. In this story, Vandal Savage shoots and kills Batman in Crime Alley, but he doesn’t stay dead. A White Lantern ring revives him, granting him incredible healing powers and control over emotions.

Batman received a significant power boost when he briefly wielded a White Lantern ring, making him incredibly powerful, even on a universal scale. He was able to defeat Vandal Savage with its help. Ultimately, though, the ring released him, and he returned to his normal self with no lasting changes.

9) The Devastator

When a Superman turns evil, drastic steps are needed to stop him, and that’s how The Devastator was created. First seen in Dark Days: The Casting, The Devastator came to be when Batman intentionally infected himself with the Doomsday virus, hoping to defeat a corrupted Superman in this world.

The Devastator is a terrifying combination of Batman’s brilliant mind and Doomsday’s incredible strength. While it gives him the power to fight Superman, it comes with a terrible price: the virus slowly transforms Batman into a monstrous creature.

8) God of Knowledge

It’s often said Batman is incredibly knowledgeable, but what if he truly knew everything? What if he possessed god-like power? That’s the central idea behind the ‘God of Knowledge’ Batman. This version of the character first appeared in Justice League #42, during the ‘Darkseid War’ storyline, when the Anti-Monitor threatened the world. Batman achieved this power by sitting in the Mobius Chair.

This power grants him complete understanding of everything in the universe, and even allows him to control reality and travel between different universes. However, becoming so all-knowing has a cost. Batman becomes addicted to the knowledge and fixated on it, ultimately needing to be physically removed from the source.

7) Hellbat

It’s arguably a bit of a stretch to include this, as it’s a powerful suit rather than a completely different Batman, but it’s too impressive to leave off the list. First appearing in Batman and Robin #33, the Hellbat armor is one of Batman’s strongest tools. Batman designed and built the suit with help from the Justice League to allow him to fight incredibly powerful enemies.

This suit is packed with incredible technology. It’s made of a shape-shifting metal armor controlled by voice commands. It can turn Batman invisible with cloaking, transform his cape into wings for flight, and even fire energy blasts from his chest emblem. However, it heavily taxes his body, so it’s not suitable for extended periods.

6) The Drowned

Not every alternate version of Batman is a hero, and The Drowned is a prime example. Bryce Wayne, from Earth-11 – a universe where genders are reversed – is far from heroic. She’s a serial killer driven by revenge after the death of Catman/Sylvester Kyle. Eventually, this version of Batwoman battles Aquawoman in a conflict between Atlantis and the surface world, resulting in Gotham being flooded, Aquawoman’s death, and Batwoman transforming into a terrifying aquatic creature.

Known as The Drowned, this alternate version of Batman possesses the same intelligence and physical strength as the original, but with the added threat of supernatural abilities like mind control. She’s a formidable and terrifying foe.

5) Superbat

Batman and Superman are often considered DC’s greatest heroes – even known as the “World’s Finest” – so combining them seems like a natural way to create an even more powerful champion. That’s exactly what happened in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #4. When a demon named Nezha took control of Green Lantern, Batman and Superman merged their spirits to remove the power ring from Hal Jordan. While successful, the ring unexpectedly fused the two heroes into one being: Superbat.

Superbat is exactly what it sounds like: a combination of Superman and Batman’s abilities, with a small amount of Green Lantern’s power added in. While this makes Superbat incredibly powerful, the hero can only maintain this form for a limited time, which hinders their ability to fight crime.

4) Darkfather

Okay, so DC’s really digging into these alternate realities, and this one… this one is intense. We’re talking about a Batman who’s gone full-on cosmic villain. Imagine Bruce Wayne, but instead of gadgets and detective work, he’s wielding the power of something called Anti-Life and basically is a New God. It’s a terrifying concept, and honestly, a seriously powerful version of the character. This isn’t just a bad day for Gotham; this is a threat to… well, everything.

Although he appears as a combination of Darkseid and Batman and possesses incredible strength – even capable of overpowering Wonder Woman – he isn’t invincible. Superman ultimately defeats him with a single punch. So, while he’s a more formidable Batman than many others, he doesn’t quite reach the top of this ranking.

3) The Batman Who Laughs

The Batman Who Laughs is a particularly evil take on the iconic hero. He came to be when a Batman from another universe (Earth-22) killed the Joker, and a toxin released from the Joker’s body drove him insane. Essentially, he’s what you’d get if Batman and the Joker were combined into a single being.

The Batman Who Laughs is a terrifying villain, completely devoid of compassion and driven to madness. He commits ruthless murders and then sets out to corrupt alternate realities. He even manages to steal the incredible power of Doctor Manhattan, but ultimately, he’s defined by his extreme wickedness.

2) The Red Death

As a huge Batman fan, I’ve seen a lot of crazy versions of the character, and it totally makes sense! The best way to make Batman even stronger is to combine him with the powers of other amazing heroes. This latest one, The Red Death, first showed up in Dark Days: The Casting #1 and is another from the Dark Multiverse. Basically, this Batman lost all his Robins and decided the solution was to take The Flash’s powers for himself – a pretty dark turn, but fascinating!

Imagine combining Batman’s intelligence and fighting skills with all of the Flash’s super speed, then adding a touch of malice. The result is a terrifyingly fast villain – essentially a twisted version of both the Flash and Batman combined. And because speedsters are so difficult to stop, this enemy is incredibly dangerous.

1) Zur-En-Arrh/Failsafe

Batman is famous for being prepared for any situation, even his own potential mental breakdown. To address this, he created Zur-En-Arrh, a backup personality designed to take control if Batman became incapacitated. However, this created an unexpected issue: Zur-En-Arrh is just as prepared as Batman and devised a plan to permanently seize control.

Meet Failsafe, an incredibly powerful Batman robot created to defeat Batman and his allies if they went too far – as defined by the dangerous alternate personality, Zur-En-Arrh. Things get even worse when Zur-En-Arrh manages to inhabit the robot’s body, becoming a physical threat. This combination of a knowing, malicious mind and a powerful, destructive robot makes Failsafe the most formidable alternate version of Batman yet – a truly terrifying and dystopian foe.
