10 Most Powerful Characters in Yu Yu Hakusho

Yu Yu Hakusho, a popular anime from the ’90s, is renowned for its supernatural martial arts theme and significant impact on the shonen fandom. This classic series has stood the test of time due to its memorable battles that fans still cherish today. But what made those fights truly captivating were the well-developed characters that gave depth to the storyline. From the main cast, supporting characters, allies, and adversaries, each one played a crucial role in this epic tale, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s worth noting that some characters held more power within the series, making them stand out among their peers.

The popular manga and anime series, known as Yu Yu Hakusho, was created by Yoshihiro Togashi, and it’s fair to say that the show’s success significantly boosted his career! Afterward, Togashi went on to produce another notable work, Hunter x Hunter, which continues today with fans eagerly anticipating each new release. In Yu Yu Hakusho, we recall the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a troublesome teenager who transformed into a hero in an instant when he sacrificed his life. Remarkably, this wasn’t the end for him as he was brought back to life and given the chance to work as an Underworld Detective. The series unfolded with mayhem, fights, and unforgettable journeys.

10) Kazuma Kuwabara

In the series, Kazuma Kuwabara stands out as a charming main character who may not be renowned for his intellect, but is widely recognized for his compassionate nature. He proudly supports Yusuke and bears the title of being Shizuru Kuwabara’s younger brother. Additionally, his feelings towards Yukina are quite pronounced, although they occasionally stir up a bit of trouble in their relationship dynamic.

Initially, Kuwabara seems like just a hunk of muscle, leading us to underestimate him. But as the story unfolds, his character evolves rapidly, revealing him to be one of the most compassionate team members.

Kuwabara possesses extraordinary physical power and stamina, and he’s an exceptional fighter. His areas of expertise are his Spirit Blade, Trial Blade, and Dimensional Blade. Ultimately, he’s the kind of hero you’ll always be cheering for!

9) Younger Toguro

In the anime series “Yu Yu Hakusho,” Toguro, often known as Younger Toguro among fans, is one of the strongest and feared antagonists. Known for his immense power, which ranges from impressive to downright terrifying, he plays a significant role in the Apparition Gang and Team Toguro. Despite his laid-back demeanor, Toguro can quickly become a formidable force when it comes to combat.

In the Dark Tournament Saga, his menacing qualities truly emerged, particularly when he faced off against Yusuke. During this battle, he notably drove Yusuke to his absolute limit, even seemingly overwhelming him to the point of defeat. However, Yusuke managed to raise his game beyond what anyone had imagined for his character, demonstrating remarkable resilience.

Contrary to how he looks, Younger Toguro is actually a B-Class demon. This might come as a surprise since he gives off the impression of being a higher-ranking entity, but it’s all about his presentation and style.

8) Shinobu Sensui

Shinobu Sensui, also known as the Black Angel, serves as an adversary for Team Yusuke. Interestingly, he was previously a Spirit Detective, but his past took a turn when he betrayed his role, creating an opportunity for Yusuke that fans can appreciate in a roundabout way.

Due to spending some time with us, Shinobu has had an opportunity to enhance his abilities and durability significantly. His resilience was clearly demonstrated when he faced Hiei’s Dragon, a testament to his strength. Admittedly, he used Sacred Energy for protection during the encounter, but this merely adds to the awe-inspiring nature of his achievement rather than diminishing it.

Although Shinobu appears human, his energy levels are exceptionally high, suggesting that if he were a demon, he might well have been of the S-Class. Notably, Shinobu’s repertoire includes his Sacred Energy Armor, Twisted Twister, and Energy Gun.

7) Kurama

Shuichi Minamino, often referred to as Kurama (either simply by his nickname or “the Yoko”), is a standout and memorable character from the series. Known for his striking, colorful hair and his affinity with plants like the powerful Rose Whip, he’s one of the most recognizable figures. When transformed into his Yoko form, Kurama taps into S-Class demon energy levels, making him a formidable figure not to be underestimated.

It’s advisable to steer clear of Kurama’s plant-based abilities, as even the Rose Whip could prove unpleasant in a confrontation. The Ojigi Plant, which can crush people, the Death Tree, a carnivorous tree, the Bloodsucking Plant, as its name suggests, and others are just some examples of his formidable arsenal.

Once upon a time, Kurama was infamous as a cunning fox spirit. However, he’s since embarked on a fresh journey in life. This transformation has resulted in an enigmatic yet formidable character, which is one reason fans find him so captivating.

6) Hiei

In the series, we have another significant character named Jaganshi Hiei, often referred to simply as Hiei. Initially portrayed as an adversary, he later becomes a key figure. Remarkably strong, Hiei is one of the most powerful individuals within the team, a fact that carries weight given the impressive feats already displayed by the group.

I must admit that Hiei often comes across as distant and mysterious. He tends to prefer solitude over socializing, but once someone manages to earn a spot in his inner circle, it’s evident that he would move mountains to protect and preserve their life.

Among Hiei’s many techniques, one of the most famous is his Darkness Flame Dragon, but it’s important to remember that he has more than just this move. We should not overlook abilities like Japan (his implanted third/evil eye), First of the Mortal Flame, and his Black Dragon Wave.

5) Yusuke Urameshi

In the anime Yu Yu Hakusho, it was clear from the start that the main character, Yusuke Urameshi, would need to undergo the greatest amount of development due to his role as a human-turned-Spirit Detective. This meant he had to handle various supernatural dangers constantly. The learning curve was undeniably steep, but Yusuke accepted this challenge without hesitation.

Over the span of the series, viewers discover that Yusuke shares ancestry with Raizen, a formidable demon (a bit more on this shortly). Consequently, he’s had this incredible power coursing through his veins from the beginning. Whenever faced with difficulty, Yusuke is well-known for resorting to his trusted Spirit Gun, although it’s not his only strategy. He’s also adept at Demon Gun, Spirit Wave, and Spirit Gun Barrage.

4) Mukuro

In the Demon World, Mukuro is among the Three Ruling Monarchs, which means from the outset, people recognized her as a formidable entity. Often, she disguises herself with bandages marked with protective symbols, revealing only one eye that hints at her mysterious presence.

Mukuro’s strength mirrors her temperament, making her a formidable figure to confront. Her past has instilled in her a propensity for anger that is alarmingly evident in her high spirit pressure. To give you an idea, she effortlessly overpowered Hiei and his Darkness Flame Dragon, a feat that was even more impressive because she was only operating at half her potential during the fight.

3) Yomi

Yomi stands as one of the Three Demon World Monarchs, placing him at the pinnacle of any power hierarchy. Interestingly, he is also the genetic father, or clone-father, of Shura. At a time long past, Yomi was merely a servant to Yoko; however, this was before an incident left him vulnerable and forsaken.

Ever since then, Yomi has meticulously refined and polished his abilities, elevating him to become one of the most formidable forces out there. What’s particularly striking about Yomi is his tranquil and steadfast demeanor, which only serves to heighten his aura of immense power. Among his unique skills are the Energy Blast Salvo, Whirlwind Energy Blast, and Demon Absorption Barrier.

2) Raizen

Raizen is one of the Three Majestic Lords of Makai, an ancient and formidable demon, known for his steel-like resilience. However, he possesses unique characteristics that set him apart from others. His gaunt appearance might suggest he hasn’t eaten in a while, but this is somewhat misleading. After falling in love with a human woman, he ceased consuming humans.

The fact that Raizen could easily defeat our hero despite being half-starved suggests how powerful he must have been at his best. It’s intriguing to imagine what he would have looked like then, though maybe it’s for the best that we no longer need to think about it.

In the series, Raizen’s actual power is often uncertain because he’s never been tested to the extent where his boundaries are clearly shown. There’s a chance that ranking him second might be incorrect, but since he hasn’t been pushed to his limits, it remains unclear.

1) Enki

Fans of Yu Yu Hakusho may recall the time when Enki joined forces with Yusuke’s team, engaging in battles against their foes during the Demon World Tournament. Of particular interest is his confrontation with Yomi, where they both showed a comparable level of power. Yet, it’s worth noting that Enki openly acknowledged that he hasn’t had to fight for quite some time.

Following his victory at the Demon World Tournament, Enki ascends to the throne as the sole ruler of the Demon Realm. Notably, one of his initial decisions was to ensure demons refrain from interfering in the human world, serving as a reminder of why he entered this conflict initially. Given his ability to hide his power, determining the exact extent of Enki’s strength can be difficult.

You can find the anime “Yu Yu Hakusho” streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu. For those who prefer the live-action adaptation, it’s accessible on Netflix.
