One of the hottest action fantasy series in contemporary Shonen is Demon Slayer, and the staggering success of its recent Infinity Castle film underscores the lasting impact of the manga. Spanning more than 200 chapters, it introduces numerous formidable characters along the way. Demons are fearsome creatures with extraordinary physical might that prey on humans during the night. Besides their regenerative powers, some demons can also wield Blood Demon Arts, powerful magical abilities that bestow them with unique talents. Humans have traditionally struggled against these beasts, but they’ve now discovered the Total Concentration Breathing Styles, which momentarily amplify their physical prowess.
In a battle spanning more than a millennium against demons led by Muzan Kibutsuji, the ancient demon progenitor, and the Upper Moons, countless lives have been claimed. Yet, through it all, the Demon Slayer Corps has remained steadfast in their mission, never wavering from their goal. This month, ComicBook listed the nine Hashira and the ten most powerful villains within the series. But when considering all the characters in the series, who do you believe would make up the top ten strongest?
Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Demon Slayer manga!
10) Giyu Tomioka
Among the Hashira, Giyu is recognized as one of the top three strongest, primarily due to his exceptional skill in mastering an ancient Breathing Style. This ability was honed under the tutelage of Sakonji Urokodaki, a previous Water Hashira. So remarkable is Giyu’s talent that he has even developed a unique breathing technique of his own. However, the heartrending demise of his closest friend, Sabito, during the Final Selection Exam left an indelible emotional wound on Giyu, causing him to question whether he truly deserves such high rank at all.
Giyu took a long while to emerge from his reserved nature, but during his battle against Akaza, he activated his Demon Slayer Mark. With Tanjiro’s safety as his top priority, Giyu found the determination to push beyond his usual abilities.
9) Sanemi Shinazugawa
From my perspective, Giyu and Sanemi seem to be evenly matched when it comes to raw talent. However, Sanemi slightly edges ahead due to his aggressive offensive combat style. His Wind Breathing techniques are primarily geared towards offense, enabling him to strike with destructive force, almost like a whirlwind. Unlike the manga, the anime introduces Sanemi’s abilities earlier, but it was during the Hashira Training Arc that we got a brief glimpse of his powers.
During the Infinity Castle Arc, he unleashes his Demon Slayer Mark amidst the fierce fight. Even though the Mark greatly amplified his powers, it wasn’t sufficient for him to defeat Kokushibo, the Top-tier Demon, singlehandedly.
8) Hantengu
Hantengu, ranked Upper Four, presents the biggest challenge in the series, not just because of his formidable power, but due to his chilling Blood Demon Art, which enables him to produce clones based on various emotions. Each clone is incredibly potent, and if one meets its end, it only multiplies further. The situation becomes even more perilous when a clone feeds off others, making the confrontation all the more arduous.
Beyond pointing out that Hantengu’s true form was incredibly diminutive, making it challenging to find him, especially in the dark, it’s also worth noting that reducing the Upper Four’s small body doesn’t simplify the task of decapitating him. Given the multitude of his duplicates and his knack for eluding Demon Slayers’ sight, Tanjiro and the rest had to battle through the entire night in order to finally overcome him.
7) Akaza
In the opening scene of the Infinity Train, Akaza’s introduction showcased the staggering power disparity between the Upper and Lower Ranks within the Twelve Kizuki. His initial intention was to eliminate Tanjiro first, but Rengoku, the brave Demon Slayer, intervened to safeguard the wounded protagonist. Despite being outnumbered, Rengoku bravely confronted the Upper Three on his own, demonstrating his commitment to not just civilians, but also his fellow Demon Slayers. He valiantly subdued Akaza until dawn and eventually sacrificed himself at sunrise.
Contrary to what one might assume, Akaza didn’t fully unleash his strength against Rengoku. In fact, during the Infinity Castle Arc, he became even stronger, causing trouble for both Tanjiro and Giyu. Akaza excelled in close-quarter combat and was the only Upper Rank demon without a weapon. Despite this, his Blood Demon Art gave him an edge, as it enabled him to produce powerful blue shockwaves with his attacks, increasing their force and reach.
6) Tanjiro Kamado
Among Tanjiro’s striking traits is his continuous growth and improvement in every battle he engages. He dedicates his all to training, recovery, and actual combat, which is plain for everyone to witness. During his duel with Akaza, Tanjiro unlocked his true capabilities. By the time the final confrontation against Muzan arrives, it’s clear that not only has Tanjiro surpassed Akaza, but also many of the Hashira, demonstrating significant progress in his abilities.
In the series, only one character employs two distinct Breathing Styles simultaneously. While Tanjiro’s physical attributes make him a suitable candidate for Sun Breathing, it has its drawbacks as it rapidly depletes his energy reserves. To counteract this, he alternates between the techniques, leveraging the versatility and adaptability of Water Breathing in addition to his primary style.
5) Gyomei Himejima
For those who only follow anime, prepare to be astonished by Gyomei’s powers within Infinity Castle. His title as the strongest Hashira isn’t merely a label; he truly embodies this strength. Gyomei’s imposing physique and nearly superhuman physical might give him an edge in battles, particularly when he employs the Stone Breathing Style, a technique that perfectly suits his abilities.
I, a dedicated fan, can’t help but marvel at Gyomei’s unique arsenal! Instead of wielding the traditional katana, he prefers a formidable weapon-a Nichirin-chained spiked flail and axe combo. But what truly sets him apart is his remarkable adaptability, even turning his blindness into an extraordinary advantage. He’s honed his senses to levels far beyond human capacity, granting him unparalleled perception and reaction speeds that rival-if not surpass-those with sight. Impressive, isn’t it?
4) Doma
You’ve likely come across the unique promo featuring Doma taking on Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira. Rest assured, the Upper Rank Two will not disappoint in this encounter. So far, we haven’t caught a glimpse of his powers, but his two significant battles during the Infinity Castle Arc demonstrate why he climbed up through the Upper Two’s ranks.
Although weakened by Shinobu’s poison following consumption, Doma managed to maintain his position against Kanae Kocho and Inosuke Hashibira. His Blood Demon Art enabled him to create and control ice in an extraordinary manner, surpassing what appears to be achievable even for a demonic entity.
3) Kokushibo
Previously recognized as Michikatsu Tsugikuni, Kokushibo was once the elder twin of Yoriichi, an illustrious Demon Slayer who pioneered the first Breathing Technique. However, due to his inability to utilize the Sun Breathing Style, he developed a distinct Moon Breathing from it. Among the early Corps members, Michikatsu was one of the few who wielded a Breathing Technique and activated a Mark. Yet, his envy towards his brother and the apprehension of not outliving the age of 25 due to the Mark’s side-effects led him to accept Muzan’s proposal to transform into a demon.
In simpler terms, he rose to the highest rank among all, and his abilities were so extraordinary that even the joint forces of Sanemi, Muichiro, Gyomei, and Genya struggled to overcome him. Even working together, they barely managed to pull off this impressive victory.
2) Muzan Kibutsuji
It’s not surprising that the ultimate villain of the series isn’t considered the strongest when you consider Yoriichi’s monstrous abilities. While Muzan may be weaker than the creator of the Breathing Styles, no other Demon Slayer throughout history has been powerful enough to challenge him alone. With seven hearts, five brains, incredible strength, and a vast array of supernatural powers, Muzan was an unstoppable force.
Working together, all members of the Demon Slayer team managed to weaken Muzan, thanks to poison created by Tamayo and Shinobu. However, they couldn’t kill him. Instead, they kept him exposed until sunrise, causing him to disintegrate due to sunlight. Remarkably, even Muzan’s backup plan – taking over Tanjiro’s body after his death – didn’t succeed, showing his incredible survival skills once more.
1) Yoriichi Tsugikuni
Among the Corps’ history, Yoriichi Tsugikuni stood alone as the only one who had the prowess to vanquish Muzan. No other individual managed to attain the power that Yoriichi possessed. Regrettably, Yoriichi allowed Muzan to escape his grasp after coming very close to killing him. Consequently, Muzan wreaked havoc and claimed countless lives. Stricken with guilt, Yoriichi lived out the remainder of his days unaware that, following several centuries, someone would discover the wounds he inflicted on Muzan and ultimately use them to slay the demon.
Yoriichi’s injuries, which Muzan had maintained for countless centuries, remained as his vulnerable spots throughout the entire series. No one, not even Tanjiro, who had perfected the Sun Breathing Art, was capable of achieving this remarkable feat.
