Tatsuki Fujimoto’s *Chainsaw Man* stands out as a truly unique manga in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump. Though it starts with a seemingly simple story about a teenager hoping for a normal life and romance, the series quickly dives into a world of devils. What makes these supernatural creatures so compelling is that they’re born from human fears, giving the concept a surprisingly relatable edge.
Fans consider *Chainsaw Man* and *Jujutsu Kaisen* to be among the most compelling series in Shonen Jump because they balance fantastical elements with a sense of realism. The first part of *Chainsaw Man*, with almost a hundred chapters, featured a wide range of interesting devils. Here are ten of the most memorable, distinguished by their unique backstories and the dangers they present.
10) Eternity Devil
The Eternity Devil is one of the first demons shown in Chainsaw Man, and it embodies the fear of things lasting forever. In the first season, it could trap people – including the Devil Hunters and Denji – in its own isolated world. It was also among the first devils to target Denji specifically, driven by the worry that he might destroy it.
The Eternity Devil trapped Denji and his friends in a hotel, intending to either drive them insane or let them starve. Surprisingly, they were able to defeat it fairly easily, which is why it’s considered one of the weaker devils. Despite this, the idea behind the Eternity Devil – endlessness – is genuinely frightening, making its swift defeat feel a little jarring.
9) Curse Devil
I’m totally fascinated by the Curse Devil in *Chainsaw Man*! It’s a seriously powerful devil, and a big reason why is its connections with a bunch of Devil Hunters, like Aki Hayakawa. What’s really cool is that it seems to be based on the fear of curses, and the way it works-especially with those nails-feels uniquely tied to Japanese lore. Basically, to make the Curse Devil attack, the person it has a contract with has to hit their target with a nail, and *then* the devil delivers the actual blow. It’s a really clever and creepy power!
This is a clear reference to Ushi-no-Toki-Mairi, a Japanese curse involving nailing a doll or effigy. The Curse Devil is visually distinctive, resembling a skeleton with two heads. It can also turn invisible, making it one of the strongest devils featured in the first part of the story.
8) Bomb Devil
The Bomb Devil is a powerful being created from human attempts at self-defense, but it ultimately became a force of destruction. Similar to the Chainsaw Devil and its host, Denji, the Bomb Devil manifests through a human named Reze during the Reze Arc in the first part of the *Chainsaw Man* series, which is being adapted into a movie.
The Bomb Devil, as you might expect, is all about explosions. Reze, who embodies this Devil, can turn parts of her body into explosives, even ripping off her own skin to create powerful, launched attacks. Given that bombs and guns are both weapons of war, it’s surprising that the Bomb Devil isn’t as dangerous as the Gun Devil.
7) Doll Devil
The Doll Devil isn’t seen directly in the story, but is embodied by a puzzling character called Santa Claus. It’s unknown why this character, who appears as female, has that name, but she possesses the Doll Devil’s power and uses it to transform people into dolls. She’s already turned many people into her puppets, and they’re all linked together as if they share a single mind.
The Doll Devil is a huge threat because anyone it turns into a doll gains razor-sharp blades for arms, making them dangerous attackers. Santa Claus is a key villain in the story, driven by a desire to defeat Makima.
6) Snake Devil
The Snake Devil is among the biggest devils shown in *Chainsaw Man*. It’s a perfect representation of the widespread fear of snakes. Beyond its huge size, it’s particularly disturbing to see human hands inside its mouth. While incredibly strong physically, its most unique power is the ability to use the abilities of other devils.
As soon as the Snake Devil appeared, it absorbed the Ghost Devil, gaining its powers and becoming an even more formidable opponent. This made it exceptionally strong, but a major weakness of *Chainsaw Man* is that the Snake Devil wasn’t used much after its introduction – a similar problem exists with the Bomb Devil. If the Snake Devil had been featured more prominently, it could have been considered one of the most powerful devils in the series.
5) Hell Devil
Though the Hell Devil doesn’t appear often in *Chainsaw Man*, its power is immense, ranking it among the strongest devils. This is because everyone fears going to hell after they die, making it a uniquely frightening entity. It represents a fear that’s even more fundamental than the fear of death itself, setting it apart from other devils.
This devil briefly appears as a massive, six-fingered hand, pulling victims down to hell with other demons. In the first part of the story, it even made a deal with Santa Claus, demanding human sacrifices. The Hell Devil is clearly a very powerful being, and the next part of the story might reveal just how terrifying it can be.
4) Gun Devil
In the first part of *Chainsaw Man*, the Gun Devil was a major character, and the story gradually revealed its importance. Created from the widespread fear of guns, it embodies pure violence and evil. It first appeared as a result of a terrorist attack in the United States and grew increasingly powerful by absorbing immense amounts of fear.
The Gun Devil’s destructive power is unmatched by any other devil we’ve seen, as it killed over a million people in only five minutes. It could have been considered the most powerful, but another devil later exploited its power, preventing it from reaching the absolute top rank.
3) Control Devil
Makima is the primary villain in the first part of *Chainsaw Man*, and her ultimate goal is complete control. As the Control Devil, she’s created from humanity’s tendency to manipulate others, and she perfectly represents this trait. She can control both people and devils, making her a uniquely powerful threat.
Makima has a powerful, unseen ability that allows her to kill people by crushing them. Throughout the first part of the story, she manipulates events from behind the scenes. Denji can only beat her by breaking free from her emotional control. Though defeated, Makima’s power as the Control Devil immediately reappears in a new form, but fortunately, this new host, Nayuta, is different – she just wants to live a peaceful life with Denji.
2) Darkness Devil
The Darkness Devil is a Primal Devil created from the fundamental human fear of darkness. It seems to have existed since the very beginning of humanity, as the fear of darkness is deeply rooted in us all. This fear stems from the idea that darkness represents nothingness, a concept explored when the Darkness Devil appears in the first part of the story.
The Darkness Devil made a striking first impression in *Chainsaw Man* with a memorable image of split-in-half astronauts. Even in its limited screen time, it demonstrated frightening powers: making people bleed profusely with just a look, crushing opponents with unseen force, and completely enveloping them in darkness. Without the presence of an even more feared devil, the Darkness Devil could have easily been considered the strongest in Part 1 of *Chainsaw Man*.
1) Chainsaw Devil
Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, is undeniably the most powerful devil in the entire *Chainsaw Man* series, and not just in the first part. Unlike most devils, who come from human fears, Pochita can actually destroy other devils completely. This leads to the idea that Pochita might have originated from the fears of devils themselves, or could even represent humanity’s hope – a force that eliminates fear and, therefore, the devils that feed on it.
Throughout the series, almost all devils pursue Pochita and Denji because they’re terrified of the Chainsaw Devil’s ability to destroy them. This creates a funny and exciting situation for Denji, who repeatedly falls for female devils only interested in the Chainsaw Devil’s power. He’s constantly upset that nobody seems to like *him* for who he is. This blend of dark humor and surprising twists involving Denji and the Chainsaw Devil keeps fans engaged.
