The Justice Society of America (JSA) came before the more famous Justice League. Created in 1940 during the early days of comic books, the JSA was the first-ever superhero team. They worked together to defend the world against supervillains and the Axis Powers throughout World War II. Over the years, the team has changed, with new, younger heroes joining to carry on the original team’s work. Many JSA members are among DC Comics’ most powerful characters, able to harness ancient and powerful energies that affect the universe itself.
The Justice Society is one of the oldest superhero teams in comics, and its members are incredibly powerful – strong enough to potentially defeat the entire Justice League.
10) Obsidian
Todd Rice, who goes by the hero name Obsidian, is the son of the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott. He gained his powers from a strange, dark energy his father was exposed to, connecting him to a mysterious realm called the Shadowlands. This gives Obsidian control over shadows, allowing him to teleport, create darkness, grow larger, form weapons, and even bring people’s worst fears to life. His connection to the Shadowlands makes him a valuable asset to the Justice Society, but he’s vulnerable to attacks using light. Also, tapping into the Shadowlands can worsen his existing mental health challenges.
9) Flash
Jay Garrick was the original Flash and a key founder of the Justice Society. A lab accident granted him access to the Speed Force, allowing him to run thousands of times faster than sound. This super-speed lets him create powerful winds, move through solid objects, and occasionally travel through time. The Speed Force also slowed his aging, letting him remain active as a hero and guide even today. While incredibly fast, Jay isn’t as quick as later speedsters like Barry Allen or Wally West.
8) Hippolyta
Before Diana became Wonder Woman, her mother, Queen Hippolyta, actually held the title first. DC Comics later revised its history to establish Hippolyta as the original Wonder Woman from the early days of comics. This new backstory revealed she ventured into the world of men and fought against the Nazis during World War II. She even joined the Justice Society, a team of heroes, before returning home to Themyscira after the war ended. While not as powerful as her daughter, Hippolyta remains an incredibly strong and skilled warrior, proven by her victory over the demigod Hercules and her defeat of numerous demons. Though her time with the Justice Society was short, she was one of their most formidable members.
7) Green Lantern
Alan Scott was one of the original Green Lanterns and a key member of the Justice Society. Though separate from the main Green Lantern organization, he draws his powers from the Starheart, a magical energy source that manifests as a green ring. The Starheart lets him create almost anything he can envision – from solid energy objects to allowing him to walk through walls, teleport, read thoughts, and even travel through time. Interestingly, the Starheart doesn’t work on wood. Despite this limitation, Alan Scott has remained a leading figure in the JSA for many years.
6) Power Girl
As a huge DC fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Powergirl, or Kara Zor-L. She’s essentially the Earth-2 version of Supergirl – Superman’s cousin, but from a different reality. It’s a bit complicated, but basically, her world was destroyed during a massive event called *Crisis on Infinite Earths*, and she ended up on our main DC Earth, joining the Justice Society. Like most Kryptonians, she’s incredibly powerful – super strength, speed, flight, the whole deal, including heat vision and freeze breath. What’s cool is she’s actually *stronger* than Supergirl! She’s gone toe-to-toe with powerhouses like Wonder Woman and Captain Atom, and even single-handedly stopped a starship the size of a city from wiping out Manhattan. While she doesn’t quite reach Superman’s level, she’s a seriously impressive hero and a vital member of both the Superman Family and the JSA.
5) Shazam
Billy Batson was a normal teenager until he met the Wizard Shazam, who gave him incredible powers based on legendary heroes like Solomon, Hercules, and Zeus. Now, by yelling “Shazam!”, Billy transforms into a powerful adult superhero. His strength and speed are on par with Superman, and he’s even been able to destroy planets. While he hasn’t always been a consistent member, Shazam is one of the most powerful heroes in the JSA.
4) Black Adam
Black Adam, the leader of Khandaq, is a complex figure who has acted as both a hero and a villain. Once a slave in Ancient Egypt, he was chosen by the wizard Shazam, but his abuse of power led to imprisonment. After being freed in modern times, he sought redemption by joining the Justice Society of America (JSA). While possessing all of Shazam’s abilities, Black Adam’s power comes from Egyptian Gods. He’s also far more experienced and isn’t afraid to use his powers ruthlessly. This combination of strength, experience, and a willingness to do whatever it takes makes Black Adam one of the most powerful and dangerous members of the JSA.
3) Thunderbolt
Yz, also known as Thunderbolt, is a powerful genie from another dimension who lives inside a pen. When someone says the magic word, “Cei-U,” Thunderbolt appears and can grant almost any wish. Originally owned by adventurer Johnny Thunder, Thunderbolt now belongs to teenager Jakeem Thunder. He’s incredibly powerful, capable of warping reality and even holding the Moon in his hand, and has defeated other powerful magical beings. While nearly limitless, Thunderbolt can’t cause death and must follow the exact wording of the wishes he’s asked to fulfill. As Jakeem learns to control Thunderbolt’s power, the genie is able to show even more of his amazing abilities.
2) Doctor Fate
Doctor Fate, also known as Kent Nelson, is one of the most powerful magic-users in the DC Universe. He can fly, shoot energy blasts, control time and space, create illusions, and even take over other people’s minds. His immense power comes from the Helmet of Fate, which contains the spirit of Nabu, an ancient being dedicated to maintaining order. When Kent wears the helmet, he merges with Nabu, becoming a nearly invincible force for good. At his peak, Doctor Fate is capable of moving planets, defeating even the most powerful gods, and preventing universal destruction. Because of his incredible abilities, Kent Nelson is a key protector of the DC Universe against magical and divine dangers.
1) Spectre
The Spectre is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe, representing the very wrath of God. He works in our world through the spirit of the late detective Jim Corrigan. Essentially all-powerful, the Spectre wields limitless magic, allowing him to control time and space. He’s known for delivering severe punishments to those he deems sinful. He’s even fought the Anti-Monitor – a being who threatened all of existence – to a standstill. Some of his greatest accomplishments include completely freezing over Hell, stripping all magic from the DC Universe, and stopping two universes from crashing into each other. In short, the Spectre is the embodiment of vengeance, and an incredibly powerful angelic force.
