The New Mutants began as Professor Charles Xavier’s training group for the next generation of X-Men – teenage heroes learning to control their abilities while attending school. Though initially intended as a successor to the X-Men, they became the primary mutant team when the original X-Men were away on a mission. Over time, they proved themselves by facing increasingly powerful enemies. By issue #100 in 1991, the team had matured and evolved into X-Force, led by Cable. Throughout those 100 issues, these young heroes truly came into their own, and the team featured several characters who went on to become major figures in the Marvel Universe.
Here’s a look at the strongest members of the New Mutants, considering both the original team and those who joined later, ranked by how powerful they became.
10) Wolfsbane

Rahne Sinclair, known as Wolfsbane, was one of the original members of the New Mutants, first appearing in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 in 1982. As a mutant, she has the ability to transform into a wolf – making her a lycanthrope. She can change between a fully human form, a wolf-human hybrid, and a complete wolf at will, and remains intelligent in all of these forms. Regardless of her appearance, she heals quickly and has incredibly sharp senses, including the ability to see in ultraviolet and infrared light, and track by scent. When in her non-human forms, she also gains super-human strength, speed, claws, and fangs. At her peak, she can even create multiple copies of herself, effectively becoming a pack of wolves.
9) Boom-Boom

Tabitha Smith is the mutant known as Boom-Boom. She first appeared in Secret Wars II #5 in 1985 and later became a member of both the X-Terminators and the New Mutants. Boom-Boom can create glowing yellow plasma bombs of varying sizes that explode with powerful force. These ‘time bombs’ can be as large as beach balls and are strong enough to destroy even powerful robots like Sentinels. She’s skilled at controlling where the explosions happen, making her one of the most destructive members of the New Mutants.
8) Rictor

Julio Esteban Richter, known as Rictor, first appeared in X-Factor #17 in 1987 and later joined the New Mutants. He has the ability to create and control seismic energy, which can range from shattering objects to causing earthquakes. He’s also protected from the effects of these vibrations, allowing him to use his powers at full strength without injury. When his powers first emerged after Stryfe killed his father, they were so strong they destroyed three city blocks. Recent X-Men comics have classified his abilities as exceptionally powerful – an omega-level power.
7) Cannonball

Sam Guthrie is the mutant known as Cannonball. He first appeared as one of the original New Mutants in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 back in 1982. His power allows him to launch himself through the air at incredible speeds, surrounded by a protective energy field. This field shields him – and anything he’s carrying – from harm. He served as a co-leader of the New Mutants and later became second-in-command when the team evolved into X-Force. Because of his near-invulnerability when using his full power, he’s considered one of the most powerful mutants – an omega-level mutant.
6) Sunspot

Roberto Da Costa, known as Sunspot, is a mutant from Brazil who comes from a wealthy background and was trained by Xavier. He was one of the original members of the New Mutants, first appearing in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 in 1982. Sunspot’s powers allow him to absorb sunlight and turn it into incredible strength. He can also create bursts of hot air that let him fly, and after developing his abilities further, he can drain light from his surroundings or even hide in shadows. He’s capable of firing powerful blasts of solar energy. When fully charged, Sunspot is among the strongest mutants ever.
5) Magma

Magma, whose real name is Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla, is a mutant with incredible geothermal powers. She’s from Nova Roma, a secret colony in the Amazon rainforest founded by descendants of Romans. She can manipulate the Earth’s tectonic plates, causing earthquakes and bringing magma to the surface. She can also shoot lava, create miniature volcanoes, and transform into a superheated form. Beyond that, she can even predict and stop volcanic eruptions. Her powers are so strong she could potentially cause widespread devastation, even impacting entire countries.
4) Dani Moonstar (Mirage)

As a long-time Marvel fan, I’ve always found Dani Moonstar fascinating. She was one of the original New Mutants, first appearing way back in 1982. Her power is really cool – she can tap into people’s deepest fears and desires and create incredibly realistic illusions. Eventually, she learned to make those illusions real, turning them into weapons. It’s a power that almost backfired spectacularly when she unintentionally summoned the Demon Bear, a truly terrifying event. But things took a massive turn when she received a piece of the Odinpower, transforming her into a Valkyrie. Honestly, as a Valkyrie, she’s not just powerful, she’s among the most powerful beings in the entire Marvel Universe – her mutant abilities are almost secondary at that point!
3) Karma

Karma, whose real name is Xuân Cao Mạnh, is a significant character in Marvel Comics, appearing early in the history of the New Mutants. She initially appeared in Marvel Team-Up #100 in 1980 and later became a founding member of the team. After her first appearance, she sought help from Professor X, making her potentially the very first member of the new group of teenage mutants. Karma possesses powerful mind-control abilities, allowing her to directly control multiple people at once. She can override their thoughts and actions, shifting her focus between different subjects as needed. Professor X considers her one of Marvel’s strongest mind controllers.
2) Magik

I’ve always been fascinated by Magik – she was consistently one of the New Mutants’ strongest members. But when it comes to sheer power output, one person always seemed to edge her out. Illyana Rasputina, Colossus’s little sister, had such a unique story. She was just a child when she was pulled into the Limbo dimension. Though it only felt like minutes passed in the real world, she spent years within Limbo, and when she came back, she was a teenager wielding incredible magical abilities on top of her existing mutant powers. She can already create these amazing portals – stepping discs that let her travel between different realities! But what really puts her at the top of the power rankings is that she’s actually the Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo itself.
1) Douglas Ramsey (Revelation)

Douglas Ramsey, often considered the weakest member of the New Mutants, had the ability to understand and speak any language – whether it was human, alien, or even the language of machines. Unfortunately, this skill wasn’t very useful in fights, and his overconfidence made him unpopular with the team. When he initially died, most fans weren’t particularly upset, and the comics simply moved on. However, Douglas experienced a significant power boost upon returning to Krakoa. He was then empowered by Apocalypse, transforming into Revelation. In the Age of Revelation storyline, he became incredibly powerful, conquering the planet using his ability to control others with just his voice. At his peak, he was able to neutralize even powerful beings like Franklin Richards and Wiccan, making him the strongest New Mutants member ever.
