10 Most Powerful RWBY Semblances (So Far)

In the world of RWBY, a new volume is being worked on, yet the previous volumes have given us a good understanding of Remnant’s functioning. One intriguing aspect of this universe is the presence of auras, which are essential for hunters as they offer shielding from harm and facilitate the manifestation of semblances. Semblances, special abilities unique to each user, tend to manifest in ways that cater to their individual combat or support requirements. Although not every character’s semblance has been revealed, there are enough known ones to rank them according to their current states, as they can develop as the user becomes more adept and creative.

In the upcoming Volume 10, you’ll probably discover more similarities being unveiled once it’s out. For now, there are already a variety of similarities to explore. Some of these similarities are subtly beneficial, like Clover’s inherent luck, but others are quite powerful and come with significant risks, such as Nora’s ability to amplify herself using lightning or electricity, which can be devastating if she overcharges or absorbs too much.

10) Blake’s Shadow

Blake’s likeness offers considerable usefulness. She can generate replicas of herself which remain at her current location. If she employs her ability with dust, these clones inherit the properties of that dust type, such as earth dust, turning into a stone clone for instance, which she has utilized at least once to immobilize an opponent’s weapon. Furthermore, Blake can utilize these replicas to alter her momentum while in the air. Although it may not be the most potent semblance encountered, it provides enough variety and backup for Blake that it merits attention.

9) Yang’s Burn

Yang’s appearance bears a resemblance to Adam’s, yet they differ significantly in one key aspect: unlike Adam, Yang doesn’t rely on weapons to deflect assaults. Instead, she absorbs the blows herself, which empowers her to inflict increased damage subsequently. Notably, this unique ability comes at a cost; Yang frequently endures damage while dishing it out, making her susceptible to hazardous situations if she underestimates opponents or overestimates her abilities slightly. This vulnerability becomes evident in her battle against Adam, as his semblance functioned similarly and dealt enough damage to sever her arm, demonstrating that she was unprepared for this particular aspect of his ability.

8) Ren’s Tranquility

In a world teeming with Grimm, like Remnant, Ren’s semblance could be a pivotal asset, particularly during situations where he has to safeguard or guide a group of civilians to safety. His power, called Tranquility, essentially conceals his and others’ emotions from the Grimm, who tend to zero in on their targets due to their negative feelings. By camouflaging emotions, Ren can render himself and his companions undetectable by Grimm, allowing him to lead them past Grimm and into safe zones with minimal danger.

7) Ruby’s Petal Burst

In simpler terms, Ruby’s appearance mirrors her requirement for power to execute mighty attacks with her colossal scythe. Petal Burst enhances her speed, enabling her to transform into a shower of rose petals to dodge obstacles and maneuver quickly, which she learned to utilize in later volumes, demonstrating that abilities can be refined over time through practice. Furthermore, Ruby can apply this ability on another person if she’s holding them, accelerating both of them at an elevated speed. This gives her a suitable mix of offense and defense, making it a crucial aspect of her combat style.

6) Pyrrha’s Polarity

Pyrrha’s unique ability is what gave her the nickname “Invincible Girl.” Her power, known as Polarity, allows her to manipulate metal objects around her, enabling feats like tossing her shield and recalling it. However, during her battle with Penny, this same power proved detrimental because Penny, being a fully metallic android, was dismantled by Pyrrha’s actions. Despite this setback, Pyrrha typically has an edge in various situations due to Polarity, as many locations in Remnant, as you’ve noticed, are abundant with metal infrastructure.

5) Tyrian’s Aura Disruption

While we don’t often see Tyrian’s powers in action, they are lethally powerful as demonstrated by nearly killing Qrow. His power, known as Aura Disruption, essentially shuts off the aura of anyone he touches, leaving them vulnerable to fatal injuries that would normally be prevented by their aura. However, the limited range of this ability is its main drawback, but when Tyrian can physically reach his opponent, it could potentially be the most lethal power on the list.

4) Neopolitan’s Overactive Imagination

Initially, Neo appears to create mere illusions that dissipate after a while, but as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that her illusions are far more lifelike than initially perceived. These aren’t just visual spectacles; they include sound effects and have the power to harm those who witness them. They can also be incredibly detailed, with Neo once projecting an entire crowd as part of her illusions, using them to speak for her. Moreover, these illusions are not only used for attack but also serve as a means for Neo to impersonate others, enabling her to access places she wouldn’t normally be able to enter.

3) Velvet’s Photographic Memory

In a nutshell, Velvet’s tendency to snap pictures of other characters’ weapons becomes evident when you understand her unique ability, known as her semblance. Essentially, Velvet can mimic an opponent’s combat techniques, allowing her to transform her own weapon into replicas of the opponents’ weapons using the photographs she takes. This makes her an exceptionally adaptable fighter, yet it appears that each weapon copy has a finite lifespan – the exact duration is unclear, but as long as Velvet has a supply of weapon photos on hand, her semblance remains one of the most potent assets in combat.

2) Jaune’s Aura Amp

Jaune developed his unique ability late, yet he’s proven to be an exceptional support character so far. His Aura Amplification function works as you’d expect, allowing him to boost the aura of himself or another character he touches. This feature offers a significant advantage by restoring Weiss’ aura, preventing a wound that would normally be lethal due to his ability to strengthen her own body to cope with the injury and encourage her aura to heal it. Moreover, Jaune can enhance the abilities of others as well. His support capabilities are unparalleled, making him an invaluable asset for both offensive and defensive strategies.

1) Schnee Glyphs

So far, only the female members of the Schnee family have inherited a special talent – the ability to summon symbolic images, or glyphs. These glyphs can perform a wide range of tasks, as demonstrated by Weiss. For instance, she employs them for manipulating gravity, speeding up her allies, and even conjuring creatures to aid in battle. As the story returns to normal life after volume 9, we’re expected to see more examples of what these glyphs are capable of from Weiss and Winter. What makes the Schnee women unique is that they can pass down this talent to future generations, which isn’t common among others.

As an observer, I’m thrilled to share that RWBY has found a new home with VIZ Media, which means the series is set to resume with its next volume! This presents us with another opportunity to witness fresh semblances unfold. The upcoming volume appears to be set in Vacuo, so we can anticipate encountering new characters who will lend a hand in the escalating fight against Salem. As the tension heightens and the stakes become more significant, it promises to be an exciting journey!
