For decades, Marvel has been known for its incredible superhero stories and surprising twists. They’ve consistently tried to differentiate themselves from other comic publishers, and one key difference lies in the power levels of their heroes. While both companies feature incredibly strong characters, Marvel’s heroes tend to be less overwhelmingly powerful overall, which often leads to different storytelling approaches. Additionally, even Marvel’s strongest heroes are often portrayed as more imperfect and capable of making mistakes.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve seen even the strongest heroes fall. It’s always shocking, even though we know death isn’t always permanent in the Marvel universe – most of them do come back! But there have been times when incredible power just wasn’t enough, and these ten heroes actually died in battle. It’s a good reminder that even with all that strength, you can still lose a fight.
10) Iron Man

Iron Man’s suit gives him incredible power, letting him overcome almost any opponent. He’s constantly improved his armor and weapons over the years, building suits that can withstand nearly anything. Like many iconic Marvel heroes, Iron Man has ‘died’ several times, though his most significant ‘death’ wasn’t a permanent one. After fighting Captain Marvel in Civil War II, he entered a coma and was temporarily replaced by Ironheart, Doctor Doom, and an artificial intelligence. He also met his end in Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, and the classic Avengers story, “The Korvac Saga”.
9) Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange has appeared in many forms over the years, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe version has made him incredibly popular. While he’s consistently had his own comic book for the past ten years, they haven’t always been big hits. That changed in the 2020s when Marvel brought in writer Jed MacKay, known for successfully revitalizing lesser-known characters. MacKay’s run included a storyline where Doctor Strange seemingly died in The Death of Doctor Strange. The comic explored who killed him and followed his wife, Clea, as she stepped up to protect Earth until Stephen could be brought back to life.
8) Professor X

Professor X, the founder and leader of the X-Men, has faced death repeatedly throughout his history, starting in the early days of the team. There have been several instances where he was believed to be dead, including one where it was actually the mutant Changeling disguised as him. Once, Xavier even faked his own death to secretly battle the Z’Nox, with only Jean Grey and Changeling aware of the deception. He was killed again later and revived with a cloned body by the Shi’Ar. More recently, he played a key part in the Avengers vs. X-Men event, where he died fighting Cyclops, who was possessed by the Dark Phoenix Force. In the current Krakoa era, he has faced death multiple times, notably at the hands of XENO and Nimrod.
7) Magneto

Magneto’s complex moral compass has always been a defining part of his character. However, since joining the X-Men in the early 2010s, he’s largely been seen as a hero – or at least, an anti-hero. Over the years, he’s died multiple times, especially during the Krakoa era. These deaths ranged from battlefield losses, like at the hands of Nimrod, to sacrificing himself to destroy Orchis’s Forge, which ultimately proved fatal. After being defeated by Nimrod, he went to Arakko and erased his memory backup, aligning with the Arakkii’s rejection of immortality. Later, he fought Uranos, Thanos’s grandfather and a powerful Eternal, during the conflict between Eternals and mutants in A.X.E. Judgment Day. Magneto took a fatal blast to the chest, destroying his heart, but used his magnetic abilities to keep himself alive long enough to get revenge on Uranos, ultimately dying in the process. Though he remained dead for months, Storm eventually resurrected him.
6) Captain Marvel I

Mar-Vell was the very first cosmic hero in the Marvel Universe. Originally sent to Earth by the Kree Empire, he grew to care for humanity and dedicated himself to protecting the planet. He fought many of the universe’s biggest villains, including Thanos, and famously teamed up with Rick Jones using special bands called Nega-Bands. Sadly, Mar-Vell eventually died from cancer caused by the villain Nitro, whose powers severely affected him. He was incredibly powerful, and while alternate versions have appeared throughout the years, he has remained deceased since his initial death.
5) Jean Grey

Jean Grey is known as one of Marvel’s most powerful characters, and her history reflects this – she’s ‘died’ many times. Her first major death occurred in “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” and she remained deceased for several years. She later returned, but experienced another death in Uncanny X-Men #281, where her consciousness briefly transferred to Emma Frost before returning to her own body. She lived on until 2004, when she was killed by Xorneto, who used the Phoenix Force to overload her with energy while manipulating Earth’s magnetic poles. She remained dead until 2018, when the Phoenix Force resurrected her, and she would tragically die again multiple times during the Krakoa Era.
4) Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer is an incredibly powerful cosmic hero. The Power Cosmic grants him a nearly unbreakable silver body, immense strength, a surfboard capable of traveling faster than light, and incredible control over energy and matter. He’s faced off against some of the strongest beings in the Marvel Universe, including Thor, Hulk, Galactus, and Thanos, and has survived many epic battles. Although he’s died multiple times – both in alternate realities like Earth X and Thanos Wins, and in the main Marvel Universe – he always returns. Most recently, he was killed in The Death of Silver Surfer miniseries, where he fought some of his greatest enemies, including Galactus. He was then succeeded by Kelly Koh, a change made to align with plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
3) Hulk

As a huge movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Hulk. Everyone knows he’s incredibly strong – arguably the strongest there is – but what’s really interesting is how hard it is to keep him down. The angrier he gets, the stronger he becomes, and he heals from almost anything. While he seems practically invincible, he can be killed, and we’ve actually seen it happen a few times in the comics and movies. The most impactful instance, for me, was in Civil War II. Bruce Banner, knowing the danger the Hulk posed, asked Hawkeye to kill him with a special arrow. It worked, but unfortunately, even in death, his body was used as a weapon by groups like Hydra. Thankfully, the ‘Green Door’ – a sort of failsafe – allowed Bruce to regain control. Since then, the Hulk has ‘died’ several times, but he always finds a way back through that Green Door. It’s a really cool concept that keeps the character compelling.
2) The Sentry

Bob Reynolds struggled with drug addiction, and during a break-in at a lab, he accidentally discovered a powerful serum that granted him incredible abilities – essentially, the power of a million exploding suns. This is how the Sentry was born. However, Bob’s existing mental health problems manifested as a dark alter ego called the Void. The Sentry and the Void constantly fought for control, and for a period, the Void took over. The Avengers eventually managed to subdue him, allowing Bob to regain control. Ultimately, Bob asked Thor to kill him, and he remained dead for several years. He was later brought back to life using a Celestial Death Seed, but was ultimately killed again by Knull.
1) Thor

Thor is incredibly powerful, considered one of the strongest gods in the universe. He uses the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, forged by the gods, which amplifies his abilities and lets him control devastating energy and even teleport. As a key member of the Avengers, he consistently fights against world-ending threats. Despite his immense power, Thor has died multiple times throughout his long life. He perished along with Asgard in the ‘Thor Disassembled’ storyline, but was resurrected. He also died fighting the Serpent during the ‘Fear Itself’ arc, only to return and defeat an imposter. Most recently, he was killed by Loki in ‘Immortal Thor,’ with his memories seemingly wiped from existence. Throughout his adventures, Thor has become well-acquainted with death itself.
