Even though the “Demon Slayer” manga wrapped up in 2020, its fame continues to soar due to the anime version. The anime is currently adapting the last story arc into a three-part movie, with the first part already premiering in Japan. This installment showcases an intense battle between Demon Slayers and the Upper Moons, where the fate of the nation hangs in the balance. For centuries, demons have been causing havoc among innocent populations, leading to countless casualties. Due to their inherent physical superiority over humans, ordinary individuals are no match for these demonic creatures. Only those who meet specific criteria can effectively eliminate them.
Demons don’t indiscriminately attack humans; rather, they do so to amass greater power. Alongside regenerative abilities, extraordinary speed, and immense strength, some demons can also master unique skills known as Blood Demon Art, further enhancing their invincibility. Among demons, Muzan Kibutsuji, the original demon, bestows some of his blood upon select superior demons. In battles against these formidable creatures, humans have historically faced a substantial disadvantage. However, despite this, they persist in fighting to eliminate their menace and secure a safer future for all.
Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Demon Slayer manga!
10) Enmu
In the Infinity Train movie, while Akaza might have been the character that shone brightest, let me emphasize that Enmu was the real primary adversary of the storyline. Despite being a Lower Moon One, Enmu was the sole survivor of Muzan’s ruthless massacre among his ranks due to his sharp intellect. His Blood Demon Art is one of the most problematic powers in the series, as it enables him to put his opponents into a deep slumber and manipulate their dreams, ultimately breaking them before taking their lives. This is how he maintained control over the train passengers, systematically eliminating them one by one.
As I watched Tanjiro engage with Enmu, it became clear that Enmu intended to share his most treasured memories of family with Tanjiro, hoping to keep him immersed in a dreamlike state. However, the reality was starkly different from this illusion. With Nezuko’s assistance, Tanjiro demonstrated an unwavering determination, repeatedly decapitating himself within the dream multiple times before ultimately managing to slay Enmu.
9) Kaigaku
In the movie Infinity Castle, it’s confirmed that Kaigaku serves as Zenitsu’s main adversary. We had a glimpse of him earlier in Zenitsu’s flashback during season one, where he teased the young Demon Slayer about his lack of proficiency in all Thunder Breathing techniques. However, it turns out that Kaigaku’s past is filled with more complexity and disgrace than we initially thought. He forfeited his humanity to survive and took Gyutaro’s place as Upper Moon Six. Throughout the series, Zenitsu has ample motivation to slay this demon.
Because many Blood Demon Arts originate from a demon’s previous existence, Kaigaku – who learned under the former Thunder Hashira – was capable of utilizing Thunder Breathing. Notably, he advanced the Total Concentration skill by materializing thunder. In contrast to Zenitsu, who can only wield the initial and most challenging form of the technique, Kaigaku can use all other forms except the first one.
8) Gyutaro and Daki
As an outside spectator, I observed that despite Gyutaro being the Upper Moon Six and the chief adversary during the Entertainment District Arc, his abilities were intricately connected to his sister, Daki. Unlike her who remained visible as the Upper Moon, Gyutaro would only manifest when Daki was in a dire situation. Together, they exhibited remarkable strength, but what made them genuinely fearsome was the unique condition where they could not perish unless both their heads were simultaneously separated.
During the battle, it was Gyutaro that Tanjiro Kamado and Tengen Uzui focused on, but Zenitsu, Inosuke, Nezuko, along with Tengen’s wives, were tasked with defeating Daki. Together, this team managed to achieve a remarkable feat by being the first to defeat an Upper Moon in over a century.
7) Gyokko
In terms of personality and style, Gyokko lags behind many of the series’ villains. However, his power should not be underestimated given his position as Upper Moon Five. Alongside Hantengu, Gyokko launched an attack on the Swordsmith Village with the intention of killing the Demon Slayers residing there. Despite the village being secretive and constantly on the move to evade demon attacks, Gyokko accomplished something that no one else has managed.
As a passionate connoisseur of Blood Demon Arts, I find myself swimming in the depths of the sea and its vibrant aquatic life, mirroring the elusive nature of its inhabitants. Had it not been for the unforeseen emergence of the Demon Slayer Mark, I might have claimed the life of Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira. In a corner, with no escape in sight, he unexpectedly tapped into his dormant memories and true powers, thwarting my attempt.
6) Nakime
Despite not having a combat specialization, Nakime was elevated to Upper Rank Four following Hantengu’s demise. Muzan, in his wisdom, bestowed the sixth rank upon Kaigaku but left the fifth rank vacant and filled the fourth with her instead. This act underscores the high regard Muzan held for her abilities, as her Blood Demon Art is essentially the Infinity Castle itself. She has the power to manipulate everything within this castle, alter its structure, and transport individuals in and out of it at her will. This clearly illustrates the significant disadvantage the Demon Slayers faced once they were trapped inside the labyrinth.
In the midst of other Upper Moons clashing, I found myself witnessing an unusual alliance between Mitsuri and Obanai, both standing firm against the newly ascended Upper Rank Four. Yushiro, driven by Tamayo’s wish, lent them his aid in every possible way. Facing two Hashira was undoubtedly a daunting task for most Upper Ranks, but Nakime effortlessly dodged their assaults without even having to rise from her seat. It was only due to Yushiro’s intervention, who seized control of her powers and compelled Muzan to terminate her life, that the Corps managed to survive the encounter.
5) Hantengu
Hantengu’s unique skill, which often caused trouble, made him a formidable opponent. He had the power to generate multiple copies of himself, each embodying distinct emotions. These replicas were already challenging to handle, but if someone succeeded in decapitating them, they would divide into even stronger variants. At first, he possessed four clones, yet over time, he unveiled a total of seven. Moreover, his strongest clone, Zohakuten, was born when the original clone, Sekido, merged with three other clones: Karaku, Aizetsu, and Urogi.
Destroying the clone was futile as the demon wouldn’t perish unless its main body was divided. Here’s another interesting fact: Hantengu’s true form is minuscule, making it effortless for him to conceal himself in spots where no one can locate him. Despite his diminutive stature, separating his head proved challenging.
Attempting to defeat the clone was a waste of time since the demon wouldn’t expire until its primary body had been separated. Noteworthy is that Hantengu’s actual form is minuscule, enabling him to hide in places undetectable by others. Despite his petite appearance, separating his head remained difficult.
4) Akaza
Akaza, ranked third among the upper echelon, excelled in close-quarters combat and found immense pleasure in engaging with formidable adversaries. Battles invigorated him, and his Blood Demon Art was centered around martial arts. As per Doma’s account, Akaza possessed the potential to surpass even the Upper Rank Two, but his unwillingness to consume women, who supply more power to demons than men, hindered his growth in strength.
Although he managed to defeat Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, in the Infinity Train Arc, Akaza faced Tanjiro during the Infinity Castle Arc. Giyu also entered the fray to aid Tanjirio, but despite their combined efforts, they struggled against Akaza’s immense power. By the conclusion of the fight, all three had exhausted their limits, yet Akaza still possessed a hidden advantage. Instead of annihilating Tanjiro and Giyu immediately, something during the battle stirred memories of his human past. He recalled his cherished fiancée pleading with him to stop, which resulted in his attack recoiling upon him, causing self-destruction.
3) Doma
For a while now, Doma has been a character in the anime, but it’s only during the Infinity Castle Arc where we get to witness his full might. As a Rank Two Upper, he’s proven to be too tough to be defeated by ordinary methods. Given that she lost her sister due to Doma, Shinobu understands this truth more profoundly than most. His Blood Demon Art is as icy as his heart, enabling him to create and control ice in ways never seen before.
Shinobu dedicated her life to avenge herself against him, enduring a year’s worth of toxic potion meant for supernatural beings. Alone, she tricked the beast into devouring her, fulfilling her desire. Shinobu put her vengeance on the line with her adopted sister Kanao, who possessed a remarkable talent. Eventually, Inosuke entered the fray, and their combined efforts managed to slay one of the strongest demons ever known in history.
2) Kokushibo
If Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the legendary Demon Slayer, is depicted as a radiant sun, then his elder twin brother, Michikatsu Tsugikuni, often overshadowed by his younger sibling, might be compared to the soft, mystical moon. Michikatsu relinquished his human identity and true name following his transformation into the demon known as Kokushibo. He eventually ascended to the Twelve Kizuki’s ranks, earning the title Upper Moon One. The formidable Kokushibo has a long history of over 500 years that supports his high rank, providing an explanation for his remarkable longevity.
Previously being a Slayer of Demons, he possessed the ability to employ Moon Breathing techniques, even when transformed into the very creature he had previously battled. Beyond his extraordinary power, he was an exceptionally skilled swordsman, requiring the joint efforts of Sanemi Shinazugawa, Genya Shinazugawa, Muichiro, and Gyomei Himejima to ultimately vanquish the demon.
1) Muzan Kibutsuji
exposing him to sunlight. However, accomplishing that task is easier said than done. After Kagaya Ubuyashiki destroyed his mansion, Tamayo injected a potent poison into Muzan, which would substantially weaken him.
Yet, towering above them, the demon remained undeterred, coming dangerously close to annihilating the Demon Slayer Corps. The long, grueling battle claimed numerous lives and shattered dreams, but in the end, the sacrifices of the Demon Slayers proved not to be in vain. Even though his physical form disintegrated upon exposure to daylight, he still sought to seize control over Tanjiro’s body. Fortunately, the Demon Slayers managed to rescue their comrade before that could happen.
