10 Most Powerful Witches in the Marvel Universe, Ranked By Threat Level

While Scarlet Witch is often considered Marvel’s most powerful witch, several others possess comparable abilities. Recently, Marvel brought two young heroes, Hulkling and Wiccan, back to Earth following a significant cosmic event called Imperial. This storyline led to the collapse of the Kree-Skrull Alliance and resulted in Hulkling and Wiccan being exiled after trying to harm the ruling couple. This exile kicked off their first major adventure on Earth in years, sending Wiccan on a journey known as the Witches’ Road, where he encountered Baba Yaga – a witch even more powerful than himself.

Now that Marvel is revisiting magic and witches, let’s explore the ten most powerful witches in Marvel Comics.

10) Topaz

I’ve always been fascinated by Topaz in the Marvel Universe! She’s an incredibly powerful witch, and while she’s often associated with the darker, monster-filled side of Marvel, her story is so much more than that. I remember reading about how she first helped Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night, learn to manage his transformations – it was amazing to see her calm such a wild force. But taming beasts is just the beginning! She’s also a skilled telepath and a seriously strong magic user – she’s even faced off against villains like Dracula and Mephisto and survived! It’s incredible that she even trained with Doctor Strange, and I loved seeing her as part of the ‘Witches’ series back in 2004. She’s a truly impressive character.

9) The Wu

Alice Gulliver, known as The Wu, comes from a unique background: her father is a police detective, and her mother, August Wu, was a magical guardian of Hong Kong. After her mother was killed by a demon, Alice gained her magical abilities and took on the responsibility of protecting the city. A relatively new addition to Marvel, she first appeared in Doctor Strange: Last Days of Magic #1 and has quickly established herself as a formidable magical presence. Like her father, Alice worked as a detective, but she also used her inherited magic while hunting down the person who killed her mother. What’s particularly intriguing about her is that she disguises her magic by weaving spells and hexes directly into her weapons.

8) Nico Minoru

Nico Minoru first appeared as a superhero in 2003 as part of the Runaways, a team of teenagers who discovered their parents were actually supervillains. They decided to rebel against their families and fight crime, ultimately working to stop their parents’ evil schemes. Nico’s parents were practitioners of dark magic, and she soon developed powers of her own. She practices blood magic, channeling her spells through the Staff of One. However, Nico has a major limitation: she can only cast each spell once, meaning she’ll eventually run out of magical power.

7) Jennifer Kale

Jennifer Kale first appeared in the comic book Adventure Into Fear with Man-Thing in 1972. She was a novice witch who, along with her brother, tried a spell using an old occult book she took from her grandfather. The spell went wrong, opening a gateway to dangerous creatures, and Man-Thing rescued them. This event created a special bond between Jennifer and Man-Thing, marking her as someone with a significant destiny. Over time, Jennifer honed her magical abilities, becoming a powerful sorceress with knowledge of ancient magic.

6) Agatha Harkness

Agatha Harkness used to be known primarily as a nanny to magical children – first Franklin Richards, and later Wanda Maximoff’s magically created twins. But Agatha is actually a very old witch who lived through the Salem Witch Trials. She took the nanny position to keep an eye on the growing powers of Franklin, and then Billy and Tommy. Despite her power, Wanda ultimately defeated and killed Agatha when she remembered her lost children. However, Agatha was strong enough to linger as a ghost, offering Wanda guidance, and she eventually returned after Wanda traveled the Witches’ Road.

5) Magik

Magik stands out as a unique witch because her powers come from being a mutant. Illyana Rasputin, sister to Colossus, was pulled into the Limbo dimension as a child. Though she was trapped there for years, only moments passed outside of it. When she returned, she was years older and had mastered both white magic, taught by a version of Storm from another reality, and dark magic from Belasco’s collection. Armed with her Soulsword, she became one of the world’s most powerful magic users and now holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo.

4) Wiccan

Wiccan is Billy Kaplan, a young magic user who is essentially the reborn son Wanda Maximoff imagined. Because of this, he possesses the same incredibly powerful chaos magic as Wanda, and potentially even greater abilities. His primary power is altering reality – as seen with Scarlet Witch, this could mean reshaping everything to his will. But, being a true hero, he wouldn’t likely do that. He’s also predicted to become the Demiurge, a being with the power to fundamentally change the laws of magic, even to the point of destroying worlds. If he reaches that potential, Wiccan would become one of the most powerful beings in existence.

3) Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga first appeared in the comic Captain Britain in 1985. She’s an ancient deity and witch who has lived for centuries by consuming those who wander into her forest. Since then, she’s repeatedly returned, even after seemingly being defeated. Most recently, she appeared in the Witches’ Road series, where she defeated Wiccan by beheading him, but magically kept him alive as her servant. Baba Yaga possesses the powers of necromancy and energy projection, though the full extent of her abilities remains unknown.

2) Morgan Le Fay

Morgan Le Fay is a remarkably powerful witch in Marvel Comics, with roots stretching back to the lost city of Atlantis. Born after Atlantis sank, she was raised as a princess of the sea before moving to Britain. There, she studied magic under Myraddin, who later became known as Merlin and founded a druidic practice at Stonehenge. Though initially Merlin’s apprentice, Morgan turned to villainy when she attempted to usurp her half-brother Arthur and seize control of Camelot. She honed her skills with the Darkhold, solidifying her place as one of Marvel’s most formidable sorceresses.

1) Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, has officially become the Marvel Universe’s new Sorcerer Supreme, highlighting just how incredibly powerful she is. Even before this, she demonstrated her abilities repeatedly. She wields chaos magic, which can be unpredictable, but she’s been steadily gaining greater control over it. She’s capable of massive feats – she once completely altered reality in the ‘House of M’ storyline, stripped nearly all mutants of their powers with just three words, and, in a moment of intense anger, even defeated several Avengers and the powerful witch Agatha Harkness. Wanda Maximoff is arguably the most dangerous magical being in Marvel, surpassing all others in sheer power.
