10 Movies You Didn’t Know Were Getting Sequels In 2026 (& Beyond)

2026 is already shaping up to be a big year for sequels, with films like *28 Years Later: The Bone Temple*, *Scream 7*, *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, *Mortal Kombat II*, *Scary Movie 6*, *Toy Story 5*, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, *The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping*, and *Avengers: Doomsday* generating a lot of buzz. But let’s look beyond the most hyped sequels to the ones that haven’t gotten as much attention. To qualify for this list, a movie had to be a true continuation of an existing story, not a reboot or a standalone film like *Evil Dead Burn*. That’s why even *Return to Silent Hill* didn’t make the cut. Although directed by the same filmmaker as the 2006 movie, Christophe Gans has stated it’s a completely new interpretation, not a continuation of the original storyline.

This also applies to first movies featuring characters who are already part of a larger movie universe, like the upcoming *Supergirl* or *Clayface* films in the DCU. We’ve included estimated release dates, but keep in mind these are subject to change, as dates often shift closer to the actual release.

10) Ready or Not: Here I Come (April 10, 2026)

The movie *Ready or Not: Here I Come* has finished filming and will be released in theaters soon. However, it doesn’t seem to be generating as much buzz as *Scream 7*.

Both films have ties to directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence. They directed the critically acclaimed horror film *Ready or Not* and then successfully relaunched the *Scream* franchise with *Scream* and *Scream VI*. Since they aren’t involved with *Scream 7*, *Ready or Not: Here I Come* is generating more buzz, particularly with Samara Weaving reprising her role.

9) The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1, 2026)

A sequel to *The Devil Wears Prada* is expected to be very successful. The original 2006 film was popular when it came out, and continues to be well-loved by audiences even now.

Twenty years after the original, a new sequel is in the works, and early signs suggest it will be just as good. The original director, writer, producer, and cinematographer are all returning, and stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt are reprising their beloved roles.

8) Minions 3 (July 1, 2026)

As a huge fan, it’s clear the *Despicable Me* movies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon! Seriously, the Minions are still massively popular – they’re selling toys like crazy, reminding me of the early *SpongeBob* craze. And the films themselves? They consistently make a ton of money. The first movie earned almost eight times what it cost to make, and the sequels have all been huge hits – *Despicable Me 2*, *Minions*, and *Despicable Me 3* all broke the $1 billion mark! Even the newer ones, *Minions: The Rise of Gru* and *Despicable Me 4*, kept that same level of success going. It’s amazing – after more than 15 years, the franchise hasn’t lost any of its appeal!

Despite the success of the third *Minions* movie, *Toy Story 5* is generating even more buzz as the animated event of 2026. *Toy Story 5* is scheduled to come out just two weeks before *Minions 3*, although it’s likely one of the films will change its release date.

7) A Sixth Insidious Film (August 21, 2026)

The sixth *Insidious* movie, originally planned to come out in 2025, appears to be a fresh start for the series. Currently, Lin Shaye is the only original cast member confirmed to return, and she will reprise her role as Elise Rainier – a character she’s played in every *Insidious* film so far.

It’s no surprise Sony is continuing the *Insidious* series, since each film has been very profitable despite relatively low production costs. The latest installment, *Insidious: The Red Door* (2023), brought back Patrick Wilson as an actor – and marked his first time directing. *The Red Door* was the most successful film in the franchise, making another sequel predictable, though there hasn’t been much buzz about the sixth *Insidious* movie so far.

6) Practical Magic 2 (September 18, 2026)

As a big film fan, I always say *Practical Magic* is the ideal cozy movie for autumn, especially if you’re not into super scary stuff. And honestly, I was shocked – in the best way! – to hear they’re making a sequel in 2026, almost 30 years after the original! It’s definitely the most surprising movie news I’ve heard all year.

Though it wasn’t necessarily highly requested, the upcoming sequel is still generating a lot of excitement. This is largely due to the return of many key people from the original film, including stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest, as well as screenwriter Akiva Goldsman and producer Denise Di Novi. Joining them are new cast members Lee Pace (known for *Guardians of the Galaxy*), Joey King (*A Family Affair*), Xolo Maridueña (*Blue Beetle*), and Maisie Williams (*Game of Thrones*).

5) Focker In-Law (November 25, 2026)

Meet the Parents was a huge success in theaters and is still a popular, feel-good movie from the 2000s. While Meet the Fockers earned even more money, it’s not remembered or watched as often.

While *Little Fockers* (2010) didn’t perform well at the box office – a surprising outcome given its $100 million budget and thin storyline – a new installment, *Focker In-Law*, is on the way sixteen years later. This one boasts some promising new cast members, including Beanie Feldstein from *Booksmart*, Skyler Gisondo known from *Superman*, and Ariana Grande. The film is also directed by John Hamburg, who previously directed the popular comedy *I Love You, Man* in 2009.

4) Violent Night 2 (December 4, 2026)

It’s common for sequels to less popular movies to go straight to streaming services. However, *Violent Night 2* is an exception – it’s currently planned for a theatrical release during the 2026 holiday season.

David Harbour is back as Santa, but the rest of the cast is completely new to the series. He’ll be joined by Daniela Melchior, Kristen Bell, Joe Pantoliano, and Jared Harris, promising a Christmas adventure packed with stars and action reminiscent of *John Wick*. Fans of the first movie can also rejoice – Tommy Wirkola is directing again, and the writing team of Pat Casey and Josh Miller are returning as well.

3) A Third (or Fourth) Jumanji Movie (December 11, 2026)

The original *Jumanji* holds a special place in the hearts of many who grew up in the ’90s, though it wasn’t a critical success. *Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle* (2017) surprised everyone by succeeding on multiple levels. While still centered around a reality-altering game, it cleverly reinvented the formula, satisfying both longtime fans and critics, and becoming a huge box office hit.

Both *Welcome to the Jungle* and *Jumanji: The Next Level* were huge financial successes. *Welcome to the Jungle* earned $962.5 million with a $90 million budget, and *Jumanji: The Next Level* grossed over $800 million from a $132 million budget. Despite this, and the fact that *Jumanji: The Next Level* ended with a setup for another movie, it’s been over five years since the second film, which is a long gap considering the first two were released only two years apart. While Jack Black, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan have all been working on other projects, seven years is a considerable wait for a third installment.

2) The Angry Birds Movie 3 (December 23, 2026)

Both *The Angry Birds Movie* (2016) and *The Angry Birds Movie 2* (2019) were produced with relatively low budgets—$73 million and $65 million, respectively. Despite this, the second movie earned only $152.8 million globally, significantly less than the original film’s $352.3 million worldwide gross.

The significant decline in viewership clearly explains why a third movie hasn’t been made in six years. However, that’s about to change in 2026, with Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, and Danny McBride all expected to return. Hopefully, the long wait will lead to a financial comeback similar to the first film’s success.

1) Ice Age: Boiling Point (February 5, 2027)

It’s been nine years since the last main *Ice Age* movie, *Ice Age: Collision Course*, which came out in July 2016. However, the franchise stayed active with a spin-off film, *The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild*, released on Disney+ in 2022.

The *Ice Age* movies did well in the United States for the first four films, but the fifth, *Collision Course*, earned significantly less domestically – about 40% less than the previous one. However, the franchise has always been very successful internationally, starting with the second movie. Even though *Collision Course* also saw a drop in overseas earnings, it still made enough money to be profitable. While the series is likely past its peak, and it’s been 11 years since the last film, the creators of *Ice Age: Boiling Point* are hoping this new installment will recapture the success of the third and fourth movies, which each earned close to $900 million worldwide.
