10 Oldest DC Heroes Ever, Ranked

For more than 80 years, DC Comics has told stories about characters with amazing powers who use them for both good and evil. It makes sense that this world would explore that conflict and where those powers come from. To make its history and universe clearer, DC released the miniseries New History of the DC Universe in 2025, providing a streamlined, modern timeline. This series not only fixed many long-standing inconsistencies in DC’s stories, but also revealed that powerful beings have existed since the beginning of time, working to keep balance and defend the innocent from destructive forces.

The DC Multiverse is incredibly old – around 20 billion years, nearly double the age of our universe. Many of DC’s greatest heroes have existed for almost as long, with some being hundreds of millions or even billions of years old.

10) Martian Manhunter

J’onn J’onzz, better known as Martian Manhunter, is one of the original members of the Justice League and also its oldest member. Originally from Mars, which is now destroyed, flashbacks have shown that J’onn is an incredible 225 million years old. To put that in perspective, when J’onn was growing up, the first mammals and dinosaurs were appearing on Earth. Over his long life, he saw his home planet destroyed and his entire race, including his wife and daughter, wiped out by his cruel brother, Ma’alefa’ak. J’onn spent centuries alone after that, until a scientist accidentally teleported him to Earth. Since then, he’s made a new life on Earth and found a second family with the Justice League.

9) New Gods of New Genesis

Okay, so picture this: long before the DC universe as we know it, there was a war amongst god-like beings – a real cosmic clash called Ragnarok. It shattered their world, and from the wreckage, two planets emerged about 4.8 billion years ago. New Genesis is basically paradise, a shining beacon of hope, while Apokolips is… well, it’s hell on a planet. These worlds are populated by the New Gods, who aren’t just powerful, they are ideas made flesh – good versus evil, that sort of thing. The good guys, led by the incredibly wise Highfather, are constantly fighting to protect not just their home, but everything from Apokolips and its terrifying ruler, Darkseid. We’re talking seriously impressive heroes here – Orion, Mr. Miracle, Big Barda, Lightray, and the Forever People – they’re the first line of defense against total cosmic annihilation.

8) Guardians of the Universe

The Guardians of the Universe are one of the oldest intelligent species in existence. Originally from the planet Maltus, they eventually settled on Oa, a world at the center of the universe, where they achieved immortality. Their initial goal was to establish peace throughout the cosmos, but their first attempt – an army of emotionless robots called the Manhunters – was a disastrous failure, resulting in the deaths of trillions. Learning from this mistake, the Guardians discovered how to use the power of willpower to create the Green Lantern Corps. Over vast stretches of time, they’ve recruited countless worthy individuals from across the universe to become Green Lanterns, even including members of ancient, powerful races known as the Old Gods.

7) Nabu

Around ten billion years ago, two intelligent races – the forces of Order and Chaos – first appeared on the planet Cilia, beginning a never-ending struggle for control. Nabu the Wise, one of the Lords of Order, eventually came to Earth around 3500 BCE. After defeating the evil wizard Wotan in a difficult battle, Nabu entered a self-induced coma within a pyramid, where he remained for millennia. In the 1940s, archaeologist Sven Nelson unknowingly woke Nabu, but was accidentally killed in the process. Nabu then chose Sven’s son, Kent, and trained him to become the powerful sorcerer known as Doctor Fate. Now, Nabu’s spirit lives within the Helmet of Fate, granting Doctor Fate incredible magical abilities to safeguard humankind.

6) Spectre

During the war against Heaven, a fallen angel named Aztar stood apart from his fellow rebels. He felt remorse for his actions and asked God for forgiveness. As a result, God transformed Aztar into the new Spirit of Wrath, known as the Spectre – a role previously held by the villain Eclipso. Now representing God’s righteous anger, the Spectre dedicates himself to punishing the wicked. To operate in the modern world, the Spectre bonded with the spirit of the late Detective Corrigan. He became a key member of the Justice Society and is considered one of DC Comics’ most powerful heroes. Using his incredible divine power, the Spectre can alter reality across multiple universes and even defeat powerful cosmic threats like the Anti-Monitor.

5) Michael Demiurgos

In the beginning, when the multiverse was first created, God made Michael Demiurgos and six other archangels as the original members of his heavenly army. Over countless ages, Michael would have to fight his twin brother, Lucifer, who led a revolt against God and Heaven. Michael ultimately won, casting Lucifer into Hell, where he remained for billions of years. Michael is a powerful guardian of the universe, dedicated to maintaining cosmic order and preventing chaos. He’s considered the second most powerful being in existence, equaled only by Lucifer.

4) The Endless

From the very beginning of the DC Multiverse, the Endless – seven powerful siblings – have shaped the lives and realities of everyone within it, both gods and humans. Each sibling embodies a core part of existence: Dream, Death, Destiny, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. They exist outside of normal time and space, and their influence touches everything that happens in the DC universe. In fact, Dream was responsible for creating most of the different groups of gods. Despite often arguing with each other, the Endless care for one another and work to prevent the multiverse from being destroyed. As old as the multiverse itself, they are among the oldest beings in existence.

3) Monitor

Long before the current DC Multiverse, a powerful ancient race called the Hands built entirely new universes. One of them, Perpetua, is the original creator of the DC Multiverse, but she was locked away for trying to use it as a weapon. She also had three sons: the Monitor, the Anti-Monitor, and the World Forger. The Monitor, whose real name is Mar-Novu, was responsible for documenting and safeguarding everything within the positive universe. While he started as a neutral observer, he ultimately chose to defend the multiverse from his brother, the Anti-Monitor, during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Though he died in that battle, the multiverse has been rebooted several times, bringing him back to life.

2) World Forger

Alpheus, also known as the World Forger, is Perpetua’s first son and is in charge of creating new universes at the Forge of Worlds. He builds these universes using the hopes and fears of all living creatures. Initially, he tried to destroy the existing multiverse and start over, but the Justice League convinced him not to. Now, wielding a powerful hammer capable of destroying universes, the World Forger fights alongside heroes against threats like Perpetua. He’s also joined the Quantum Quorum, a team of time travelers who united to battle Darkseid in DC K.O.

1) The Presence

As a huge fan of cosmic beings, let me tell you about the Presence. He’s unlike anything else – basically, he is the ultimate creator, existing before and after everything else. He didn’t just make the universe, he made all of time, space, and every dimension you can imagine! It’s fascinating how humans, because of our beliefs, tend to picture him as similar to the God from Abrahamic religions, but his true form is beyond comprehension – eternally existing. He eventually built the Silver City, which most people know as Heaven, as a home for his angels. Honestly, the scale of his power is mind-blowing – he can literally hold all of existence in his hand! Despite being so mysterious, he’s a genuinely good being, and he actually saved everything from being destroyed by this ancient, powerful darkness. It’s an incredible story!
