The Marvel Comics universe isn’t just one universe, but a constantly repeating cycle of destruction and creation. Most of the stories we know happen within a specific version called the Seventh Cosmos, which began with the Big Bang around 13.8 billion years ago. Each of these cosmic cycles lasts for billions of years. However, even before the Big Bang, there were powerful, dark forces. These entities come from previous versions of the multiverse and are incredibly powerful because they’ve lived through countless cycles of destruction and rebirth – and often caused them. Many of these villains aren’t just individuals, but the embodiment of concepts like entropy, and they aim to destroy everything.
These villains are incredibly old and strong, viewing humans as insignificant, like insects whose lives are fleeting. When they appear, the entire multiverse is threatened.
10) Galactus

Galan began as a simple scientist living in a universe called the Sixth Cosmos. When a catastrophic event known as the Black Winter started destroying everything, he witnessed the death of his entire world. Becoming the last living being in the Sixth Cosmos, Galan fused with the immense power of the First Cosmos’ consciousness. This event led to his rebirth as Galactus when the universe was created 13.8 billion years ago. Now a cosmic force driven by an insatiable hunger, Galactus consumes planets to survive. He has repeatedly targeted Earth for consumption, but teams like the Avengers and Fantastic Four consistently manage to stop him, despite his incredible power.
9) Black Winter

The Black Winter is a shapeless, ancient being whose only goal is to devour entire multiverses. It’s so old it destroyed the Sixth Cosmos, making it far older than Galactus. In fact, it once turned Galan (who would become Galactus) into a herald, using him to spread destruction. Even after Galactus broke free, the Black Winter tried to control him again. This entity can easily wipe out universes and creates a deadly, disintegrating snow wherever it goes.
8) Anti-All

Billions of years ago, during a period known as the Third Cosmos, a timeless battle began between two powerful beings. Lifebringer One, the first hero, represented light, order, and life itself. His opponent was Anti-All, a massive dragon who embodied destruction and sought to erase everything that existed. Their conflict raged across multiple Cosmoses, from the Third to the Seventh, and at one point, Anti-All nearly defeated Lifebringer One. Ultimately, with help from allies called the Defenders, Lifebringer One was able to destroy the ancient, destructive dragon, ending a threat that had lasted for eons.
7) Beyonders

The Beyonders are an incredibly powerful race that existed since the beginning of the multiverse, during an era called the Second Cosmos. They were created by the Celestials to help build new universes. From their home dimension, the Beyond – which exists outside of all universes – the Beyonders crafted countless worlds and pocket realities. Their goal was to destroy the existing Marvel Multiverse to stop a supremely powerful threat named Enigma. They accomplished this by using the reality-altering powers of the Molecule Man to wipe out the multiverse. However, Doctor Doom seized the Beyonders’ power and used it to rebuild what was left of reality, forming Battleworld as a safe haven for the few who survived.
6) Abraxas

Abraxas, a powerful being representing the destruction of everything, was born with the creation of the Second Cosmos, the original multiverse, by the Celestials. He’s essentially the opposite of Eternity, the being who embodies the universe itself. Abraxas wants to obliterate all of existence, but was originally trapped by Eternity. To maintain balance and keep Abraxas imprisoned, Eternity created Galactus. When Galactus was killed, Abraxas escaped and began destroying universes. Fortunately, Franklin Richards brought Galactus back to life, and Galactus then used the Ultimate Nullifier to completely destroy Abraxas.
5) Celestials

In the beginning, there was only one universe – a conscious entity called the First Firmament. Lonely, it created the Celestials, a powerful alien race who initially worshipped it. Eventually, the Celestials turned against the First Firmament, breaking it apart and creating the first multiverse, known as the Second Cosmos. These immortal beings have existed through countless eras, traveling to planets and experimenting on the life they find there. When they came to Earth, they engineered different human groups – the Eternals, the Deviants, and the first mutants. The Celestials aren’t concerned with any pain they inflict and will destroy worlds that don’t meet their criteria.
4) Chaos King

Long before the universe began, there was Amatsu-Mikaboshi, a being known as the Chaos King. The story of what happened to this powerful god of darkness and chaos is a mix of fact and myth, but it’s said he was eventually trapped in the underworld, Yomi, by the goddess Gaea and many other gods. After being imprisoned for billions of years, he broke free and unleashed his power, destroying or capturing countless gods in an attempt to wipe out everything. Even incredibly powerful beings like Satan and Death couldn’t stand against him. Ultimately, Hercules defeated the Chaos King – not through strength, but by cleverly trapping him in a separate, contained universe.
3) Oblivion

The Chaos King came from the nothingness before creation, but Oblivion is that nothingness itself – the original darkness that existed before time and space. Powerful dark gods like the Chaos King and Knull are just acting on Oblivion’s will. Interestingly, he’s believed to be the first son of the One Above All, the original creator of everything. Oblivion represents complete and utter nothingness, where even the soul is destroyed. Like his followers, Oblivion is incredibly cruel and has spent billions of years relentlessly trying to destroy all life.
2) One Below All

Long before anything existed, even emptiness, there was the One Above All – the supreme being who created everything in the Marvel Universe and rules over it. As the embodiment of life and kindness, the One Above All also has an opposite: the One Below All. This being represents hatred and destruction and is just as old. The One Below All uses a strange energy, like gamma radiation, to spread evil throughout the multiverse, transforming people into terrifying creatures. This powerful, ancient god is essentially the dark side of Marvel’s creator.
1) Mother of Horrors

While the One Above All is considered the creator of everything, there’s a being just as old and powerful that even he didn’t create. This being, known as Vinruviel or the Mother of Horrors, is the One Above All’s greatest enemy. She’s the only one who can actually hurt him, and she even used her power to create the One Below All by corrupting the One Above All’s essence. The One Above All banished her and her terrifying offspring beyond the bounds of reality, where she remained for billions of years. The Mother of Horrors is so ancient and powerful that she rivals the ultimate creator himself.
