The action genre is famous for its over-the-top, memorable character names – think Lincoln Hawk from Over the Top, Marion Cobretti from Cobra, or John Matrix from Commando. Names like Mason Storm and Gino Felino just add to the list! While sci-fi also has its share of unique names, action movies really excel at making these ridiculous-yet-fitting names work. Here’s a look at some of the best – names that are either charmingly silly, cleverly suggestive, or perfectly capture the essence of the character.
Look, I actually like these names, honestly! Sometimes, names in movies and shows can be a little too obvious, you know? They hit you over the head with the meaning. But these ones? They’re clever. They either really fit the character perfectly, or they’re funny without being cheesy or making you cringe. It’s a nice balance, and I appreciate that.
10) Duncan Idaho

Given that Earth is essentially a neglected planet within the Dune universe, it makes you wonder if Duncan Idaho’s ancestors lived in Idaho for a period. We probably won’t get an answer, but it’s amusing that ‘Idaho’ is a fitting surname, and it will be great to see him return in Dune: Part Three.
The name Duncan Idaho just sounds good together – it’s a smooth combination. It wouldn’t have the same impact if it were Duncan South Dakota, for example. The origin of the name might even come from a playful idea about dipping fries into sauce.

9) Klaatu & Gort

Whether you’re familiar with the original 1951 film or the 2008 remake, the characters Klaatu and Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still are a memorable duo – and their names are just fun to pronounce!
Many people recognize the phrase “Klaatu barada nikto,” particularly fans of Army of Darkness. It’s what Klaatu, the film’s gentle alien visitor, says to Gort, his robot guardian, to prevent Earth’s destruction. It’s a memorable line, but it works so well because “Klaatu” sounds like a classic alien name. And “Gort” just sounds like something would make if it fell onto a hard floor – maybe a splat of Nutella on laminate!

8) Groot (& Rocket Raccoon)

Marvel is known for good character names, and Steve Rogers is a perfect example of classic Americana. However, two members of the Guardians of the Galaxy team – as seen in James Gunn’s movies – have particularly memorable names.
We like Gamora, Peter Quill, and Drax, but Groot and Rocket Raccoon are just better names. ‘Groot’ sounds like something a tree first learning to speak would say. And ‘Rocket Raccoon’ is catchy thanks to the repeated ‘R’ sound, plus it suits his love of weapons and building things.

7) Marty McFly

The name Marty McFly perfectly captures a young guy who’s approachable and laid-back, but not exactly a hard worker. Plus, the alliteration just makes it catchy.
The Back to the Future movies are full of exciting situations, but they maintain a generally upbeat and fun feeling. Marty McFly perfectly embodies this lightheartedness – he’s a relatable, average guy from a small American town, and it’s easy to root for someone named Marty.
6) Neo

Keanu Reeves became a sci-fi icon with his role as Neo in the groundbreaking 1990s film, The Matrix. The characters Trinity and Morpheus were equally memorable and instantly became sci-fi legends.
Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus all have names that feel modern and high-tech, almost like usernames from a video game. Neo’s name is especially short and memorable, giving him a legendary quality – it feels more like a powerful sound than a traditional name. It’s also notable that this character, who is presented as a savior figure, has a name only three letters long, mirroring the symbolic brevity often associated with God.

5) Han Solo

Star Wars features many characters we love, and many with names we remember well. Han Solo is arguably the most iconic of them all.
A big part of what makes the character interesting is his family name. The name ‘Solo’ gives you a strong sense of who he is and how he lives his life in the galaxy – aside from his relationship with Chewbacca. It’s also a clever detail that his last name is eventually stripped away as he grows and changes, even within the first film itself.

4) Furiosa

Puns are divisive – some find them hilarious, others groan. The same goes for character names that are too obvious. Occasionally, a clever name really lands, like Cruella de Vil or Maleficent. But names like those given to the ‘Bond girls’ – think Holly Goodhead or Pussy Galore – are more questionable. Whether they work or not really comes down to personal taste.
I honestly think calling her ‘Furiosa’ is brilliant – it might even be the perfect name for a character in a movie! It doesn’t feel forced or silly at all, and it totally makes sense within the world of Mad Max. Think about it: society has crumbled, so why wouldn’t names be different? It feels right that a little girl growing up with a tough, strong community of women, surviving in that harsh landscape, would be given a name like Furiosa. And it fits even more when you see what she goes through – being tormented by someone like Dr. Dementus (seriously, what a name!) and then fighting to save those young women from Immortan Joe. It just all comes together so well.

3) Grant Grant

This is the second time we’re featuring James Gunn, and this time, he actually came up with the title himself.
Grant Grant is the primary antagonist in the movie Slither, portrayed by Michael Rooker, known for his role as Yondu Udonta. The name is intentionally unremarkable – almost comically ordinary, even more so than names like John Johnson or Steven Stevenson. It’s deliberately and playfully repetitive.
2) Savage Opress

We talked about how the name ‘Furiosa’ is surprisingly fitting, and ‘Savage Opress’ is similar – but it’s a bit much. It’s definitely meant to be scary, but it comes across as almost silly.
Darth Maul was always a clear threat. Vader’s intentions were more hidden, but Maul represents raw, aggressive force. And with Savage Opress from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, his very name suggests hostility. He’s designed to make things difficult for you, controlling and limiting your options, and he won’t be pleasant about it. You could practically call him something like ‘Vicious Victor the Vile Villain’ to get the point across.

1) Jack Deth

The name ‘Jack Deth’ is intentionally ridiculous, even more so than typical action movie names. It’s so over-the-top that it could be silly, but it works because Tim Thomerson, a very talented comedic actor, brings the character to life.
If you’re not familiar, Jack Deth comes from the Trancers series of films. These were made on a small budget by Charles Band and his production company, Empire Pictures (Band later started Full Moon Productions, known for movies like Puppet Master). While not exactly masterpieces – Re-Animator being a notable exception – Band’s films are often fun and silly. Trancers fits that description, which is why the name ‘Deth’ is so fitting for this character and world.
