The Justice League is home to the most powerful superheroes in existence. They constantly fight villains capable of incredible destruction – reshaping reality, destroying planets, and even threatening the entire universe. When everything is on the line, the Justice League is the last hope. They always manage to overcome any challenge and save the day, thanks to their incredibly strong team. However, even among these heroes, one stands out as the most powerful.
Alright, so I’ve been tasked with ranking the ten strongest members of the Justice League based purely on physical strength. That means no magical boosts or reality-warping powers – sorry, Spectre, you’re amazing, but this isn’t your contest! We’re sticking to heroes who’ve been consistent Leaguers, not just passing through or those with a hazy membership status like World Forger or Damage. To avoid a super-long list, I’m grouping heroes with similar power levels together – no need to give each member of the Shazam Family or every Kryptonian their own individual spot. Now that we’ve got the rules down, let’s dive in and find out who DC’s truly strongest heroes are!
10) Aquaman

Aquaman often gets made fun of, but he’s actually incredibly powerful. He’s proven time and again that he can go toe-to-toe with even the strongest heroes, like Superman and Wonder Woman. While he doesn’t usually win those fights, he consistently manages to hold his own, even managing to injure or overpower them – which takes immense strength. He’s demonstrated this power by lifting massive objects, including a city block and even a tectonic plate. People often underestimate Aquaman, but he’s far stronger than he appears. Never count the King of the Seas out.
9) Lobo

Let me tell you, Lobo is the best bounty hunter out there, and it’s not just luck. He’s practically unkillable and unbelievably strong. I’ve seen him go toe-to-toe with Superman – and actually hold his own! But the craziest thing? In The Authority/Lobo: Spring Break Massacre, he literally crushed an entire city – we’re talking trillions of tons – into a little ball and ate it. Seriously, only a total powerhouse like Lobo could pull off something that insane.
8) Big Barda

Big Barda is incredibly powerful, consistently proving herself against the universe’s biggest threats. Originally chosen by Granny Goodness to command the Furies – Apokalips’s elite soldiers – she continues to effortlessly defeat Darkseid’s forces. While she has a long history of impressive battles, one standout moment occurred in JLA (1997) #1000000. There, she fought Wonder Woman One Million to a near tie, and using her Mega-Rod, delivered a punch with the force of five tons per square inch. Considering she’s about seven feet tall with fists roughly five inches wide, that single blow would generate around twenty-five tons of force.
7) Orion

I’ve always been impressed by Orion, the adopted son of Highfather. He could be ranked even higher, honestly, but his power levels sometimes fluctuate. Still, he’s undeniably one of the strongest heroes out there! As New Genesis’s top warrior, he’s gone toe-to-toe with Darkseid and Superman countless times, and even managed to defeat his own father on occasion. He’s defeated Kalibak, briefly stunned Highfather himself, and basically fought everyone imaginable, even reaching the Source Wall! He’s incredibly powerful, no question, but when I look at the absolute top tier, they just seem a little more consistently strong.
6) Supergirl

Supergirl shares a power level with characters like Power Girl and other members of the Superman family, ranking as the third strongest overall. However, her strength is surprisingly variable. Sometimes she’s shown as incredibly powerful, even surpassing Superman – once sending him crashing through the Great Wall of China – but at other times she struggles against weaker opponents. Though she possesses Kryptonian strength comparable to Superman, she’s generally portrayed as slightly less powerful. While she’s capable of incredible feats, her inconsistency prevents her from ranking higher than sixth.
5) Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is surprisingly powerful, often underestimated when it comes to sheer strength. She possesses the Strength of Gaia, allowing her to fight and even defeat gods like Zeus and Hercules. She frequently battles powerful opponents – divine beings, monsters, and even heroes like Superman – and consistently holds her own. For example, she easily defeated the mind-controlled Kryptonian, Power Girl, in Wonder Woman (2006) #40 and #41, and quickly overcame Grail, Darkseid’s daughter, after facing five of her toughest enemies in Wonder Woman (2023) #6. While Diana is arguably the most skilled fighter here, some others possess slightly greater raw power.
4) Captain Atom

Captain Atom is incredibly powerful – arguably too powerful for comics. What’s most relevant here is his ability to physically fight on par with Superman. He recently demonstrated this in DC K.O.: Superman vs Captain Atom, even winning the first round purely through strength. When at his best, Captain Atom is nearly unbeatable and is often called upon to handle rogue heroes. However, he frequently gets defeated early in stories to prove another character’s strength, which prevents me from ranking him higher than fourth.
3) Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter is often considered Superman’s equal in terms of strength, and his track record proves it. Beyond his incredible powers, he’s consistently fought Superman to a standstill, and even won sometimes. He’s defeated powerful foes like Black Adam, and has even managed to overpower beings as strong as Superboy-Prime and Darkseid. Martian Manhunter is physically as powerful as Superman and is a force to be reckoned with.
2) Shazam

The Big Red Cheese possesses incredible strength, far beyond even Hercules. He was once considered Superman’s equal, and for good reason – he consistently pushes Superman to his limits in ways no other hero can, often landing a few hits. A recent example of his power came in Shazam (2023) #5, where he managed to restore the moon’s normal rotation after it was accelerated by a warp drive. While Captain Marvel is definitely one of DC’s strongest heroes – and some would argue the strongest – the top spot ultimately belongs to another.
1) Superman

It’s clear that Superman is the strongest member of the Justice League. He’s widely considered the most powerful superhero ever, consistently overcoming incredible challenges since his debut. From moving planets to effortlessly defeating powerful villains like Darkseid, and even accidentally destroying solar systems, Superman’s strength is unmatched. He’s the go-to hero when world-shattering force is needed, and he always seems to have even more power in reserve. Some argue his son, Jon, is equally strong, or even surpasses him, but Superman remains the iconic “Man of Steel” and the strongest hero around.
