10 Sci-Fi Heroes Even Smarter Than Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Lead

So far, one of the biggest movie hits of 2026 is a hopeful and touching sci-fi film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It’s based on Andy Weir’s novel and tells the story of a scientist trying to save the Sun.

Ryan Gosling plays Dr. Ryland Grace, an astronaut who unexpectedly finds himself in a critical situation. He uses his intelligence and abilities to cope. While many sci-fi heroes have saved the day with their smarts – like the main character in Project Hail Mary – Dr. Grace is right up there with them.

Interstellar’s Murphy Cooper Saves Humanity

Before embarking on his crucial space mission to save humanity, Ryland Grace plays a key role in Project Hail Mary by identifying Astrophages as the cause of the Sun’s weakening. In doing so, he also realizes one of his earlier ideas was incorrect. However, these accomplishments pale in comparison to the achievements of Murphy Cooper.

As a huge movie fan, I always thought the real heart of ‘Interstellar’ was Murph, played brilliantly across different ages by Mackenzie Foy, Jessica Chastain (who rightfully won an Oscar!), and Ellen Burstyn. She’s the one who actually saves humanity, figuring out how to solve the gravity problem and get us off a dying Earth. Honestly, for that alone, she’s the gold standard for smart, capable characters in film – a true cinematic hero!

Arrival’s Louise Banks Achieves Interplanetary Peace

In Denis Villeneuve’s stunning sci-fi film, Arrival, the main character, voiced by James Ortiz, learns to communicate with an alien engineer by using the translating software on his computer. Unlike many sci-fi stories, the film’s hero didn’t need advanced technology to connect with the extraterrestrial visitors.

Amy Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguist brought in by the U.S. government to try and communicate with newly arrived aliens called Heptapods. As she learns their language, Louise’s own mind expands, allowing her to experience time not as a straight line, but all at once – past, present, and future. This won an Oscar in 2016.

The Martian’s Mark Watney Survives the Red Planet

Andy Weir first gained recognition with his 2011 novel, The Martian, which was later turned into a popular and Oscar-nominated film directed by Ridley Scott in 2015. The main character, Mark Watney (who previously made a small appearance in Interstellar), shares some traits with the hero of Project Hail Mary, but the latter is more skilled in a wider range of areas than Gosling’s character.

As a huge movie fan, I always loved how resourceful Mark Watney was in ‘The Martian’. Sure, his engineering skills were vital for survival after everyone thought he was gone, but it was his botany background that really saved him. I mean, the guy literally had to use his own waste to grow potatoes! He totally ‘MacGyvered’ his way out of a hopeless situation, and it was brilliant to watch.

Contact’s Ellie Arroway Mastered Alien Technology

Grace saves both her planet and Rocky’s by teaming up with her alien friend. Similarly, in the 1997 film Contact, directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on Carl Sagan’s novel, Dr. Ellie Arroway (played by Jodie Foster, an Academy Award winner) accomplishes incredible things using information most people couldn’t understand.

Ellie cracks a coded message from aliens and realizes it’s a set of instructions for building a spaceship. She leads the project to create this ship and ultimately becomes its pilot, essentially paving the way for the technology Grace uses in Project Hail Mary. You could definitely call her the pioneer of that technology.

Prometheus’ David Reverse-Engineers the Engineers’ Biology

Including David, Michael Fassbender’s character from the Alien films, feels a little like cheating since he’s not actually human – he’s an artificial intelligence. Still, his scientific accomplishments are remarkable, even if they aren’t ethically sound.

In Ridley Scott’s 2017 film Alien: Covenant, a sequel to his 2012 movie Prometheus, the android David discovers how to recreate the process the ancient Engineers used to create humanity. This allows him to develop a terrifying new creature, making him the most formidable villain in the Alien series and a far more accomplished biologist than any human character.

Gravity’s Dr. Ryan Stone Is a Fast Learner Under High Pressure

While Grace in Project Hail Mary finds clever ways to help himself during his mission, he really relies on Rocky for survival, and Rocky feels the same way. This is quite different from Dr. Ryan Stone’s struggle for survival in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 film, where she faces a completely unique set of challenges.

In the movie Gravity, Sandra Bullock plays a medical engineer who becomes the only survivor of a space accident while working on the Hubble Telescope. Despite her lack of training, she learns to fly several different spacecraft, all while facing the constant danger of being lost in space. When you consider everything she goes through, her situation seems much more challenging than it might initially appear.

Jurassic Park’s Dr. Ian Malcolm Foresaw the Prehistoric Chaos

I was really impressed with how Grace handled things when everything went crazy in Project Hail Mary – he was usually able to get things under control. But honestly, he didn’t seem to see major problems coming, which is a big difference compared to Dr. Ian Malcolm in the movie Jurassic Park; Malcolm always seemed to anticipate disaster!

Jeff Goldblum’s character, a mathematician specializing in Chaos Theory, predicted that Dr. Hammond’s (Richard Attenborough) dinosaur theme park would be a disaster. His warning – that scientists often focus on if they can do something, without considering if they should – could have prevented the trouble that ultimately befell Hammond and those on the initial tour of Jurassic Park.

Her’s Theodore Twombly Relates to a Complex, Evolving AI

Ryland Grace from Project Hail Mary isn’t the only incredibly clever character in science fiction films – and they don’t all have to be astronauts or trained scientists. Consider Theodore Twombly, the protagonist of Spike Jonze’s 2013 Academy Award-winning film.

Joaquin Phoenix delivers a deeply moving and captivating performance as Theodore, a lonely, divorced man whose job is writing personal letters for others. He unexpectedly falls in love with Samantha, the voice of his new computer operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Phoenix’s character shows remarkable emotional understanding, allowing him to connect with the developing artificial intelligence in a way that seems to awaken genuine feelings within it. While this development is a bit unsettling, it’s a truly remarkable achievement.

Apollo 13’s Jim Lovell Is a True Hero of Outer Space Survival

It’s not just fictional characters who are smarter than Ryland Grace in the story. The plot and characters of Project Hail Mary were actually inspired by the incredible true story of Apollo 13, and the book might not exist without it.

Tom Hanks stars as Jim Lovell, the commander of the famous 1970 Apollo 13 mission. The mission faced a major crisis when an oxygen tank exploded, crippling the spacecraft’s power and life support systems. With help from mission control back on Earth, Lovell and his crew had to rely on their own ingenuity to solve the problems and find a way to safely return home.

MCU’s Bruce Banner Is a Beast of Scientific Know-How

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m constantly amazed by the incredible intelligence of so many of its characters, especially those we’ve seen come to life in the movies. Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner is definitely one of the smartest – he’s a brilliant scientist, and it’s awesome to see that portrayed on screen!

Similar to Ryland Grace, Bruce Banner is an expert in molecular biology and is also admired for his knowledge in many other scientific areas, including gamma radiation and artificial intelligence. As demonstrated in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, he even found a way to manage his transformation into the Hulk without losing his intelligence – a feat only a true genius could accomplish.
