10 Short-Lived Animated Series That Deserve a Revival

In essence, animated TV series have become an integral part of our television landscape as well as streaming platforms, with many of us having grown up enjoying iconic animated programs that sparked our admiration for animation in general. Regrettably, while some series are allowed to flourish and continue, there are numerous ones that were cut short prematurely. These unfortunate cancellations could be due to falling short of unrealistic expectations or external factors beyond their control. Despite these setbacks, we can’t help but mourn the loss of these shows and hope for their eventual return, so they can continue the captivating stories that once held us spellbound.

Currently, there’s been an abundance of revival and reboot announcements for popular shows, such as the return of an animated X-Men series and a comeback for Gargoyles. It’s possible that more favorites may follow suit soon. While it might seem overly optimistic, these shows are certainly worth looking forward to.

1) Infinity Train

Despite being the longest-running show on this list, the cancellation of Infinity Train left a significant void. This was a show that devoted fans eagerly anticipated, as the pilot episode premiered three years before the rest of the series. It’s unfortunate that the series had to end prematurely, as it was the passionate fanbase that kept it alive. So, it was disheartening when it was confirmed that Infinity Train would not be renewed for another season. Worth mentioning is that the series only managed to complete four out of its planned eight seasons.

The show Infinity Train centers around a massive and enigmatic train, giving it its name. It journeys through bizarre terrains, acquiring passengers as it goes. As expected, we’ve only begun to unravel the mystery of this train, as each carriage is filled with turns and surprises. The first two seasons follow Tulip Olsen, while subsequent seasons center on Grace and Simon, leaving one pondering who would have been the focus for later seasons.

Infinity Train is available to rent through Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.

2) Wolverine and the X-Men

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the captivating resurgence of the X-Men universe, particularly with the phenomenal success of both “X-Men: The Animated Series” and its revival, “X-Men ’97”. Yet, it seems there’s been an intriguing silence regarding “Wolverine and the X-Men”. For those who cherished the animated X-Men adventures, I can confidently say that “Wolverine and the X-Men” is a must-watch. It follows Wolverine’s relentless pursuit to reunite the team, shattered by enigmatic circumstances that tore them apart.

Humorously, the series initiates with a recurring motif: Wolverine departing. In essence, it commences with Rogue and Wolverine having a heated disagreement over this matter, which escalates rapidly when an explosion occurs. Consequently, the team is left incapacitated, with Wolverine frantically attempting to restore order. Unfortunately, as Wolverine and the X-Men only managed one season, it failed to fully develop its potential.

Wolverine and the X-Men is available to stream on Disney+.

3) Inside Job

The latest series titled “Inside Job” has unfortunately become a victim of the unpredictable world of cancellations in streaming services. Initially planned for a second season on Netflix, the show was unexpectedly axed, leaving the producers with little time to prepare a fitting conclusion. As a result, it’s the fans who are left feeling shortchanged.

The series titled Inside Job blends humor from the workplace setting with intricate conspiracy theories, resulting in a witty and ominous production. This group of characters includes Reagan Ridley (a shy scientist), Brett Hand (the obedient one), Gigi Thimpson (the office gossip), Glenn Dolphman (a military advisor who’s part human, part dolphin), Dr. Andre Lee (an addicted biochemist with a flair for drugs), and Myc Celium (a psychic mushroom known for its sharp tongue). Their responsibility is to maintain secrecy, but they often find that it’s not as straightforward as it seems.

Inside Job is available to stream on Netflix.

4) Green Lantern: The Animated Series

Instead of getting axed due to poor viewership or ratings, the animated series “Green Lantern” was unfortunately cancelled because another project failed financially. Coincidentally, this happened during the same period when the live-action “Green Lantern” series premiered (2011-2012). Sadly, dismal sales for the other project had a domino effect on the budget of the animated series, effectively ending its run, as we now know.

In “Green Lantern: The Animated Series,” some well-known characters such as Hal Jordan and Kilowog were introduced, while a fresh face named Aya joined the cast, quickly winning over fans’ hearts. Contrasting these Green Lanterns were the notorious Atrocitus and his team.

5) Invader Zim

Invader Zim, a humorous series from the early 2000s, stands out with its unusual blend of darkness and comedy. Almost instantly, it garnered a dedicated fanbase, largely due to the meme-worthy content within it. Conceived by Johnen Vasquez, the show gained traction among viewers and critics alike, although it fell short of Nickelodeon’s desired ratings. The absence of family-friendly aspects contributed to its unfortunate demise. However, there is some positive news! Fans managed to rally support for a 2019 film titled Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, offering hope that more may still be on the horizon.

The animated series titled “Invader Zim” revolves around its main character, Zim, on his mission to conquer Earth. Despite being somewhat of an outcast from his alien species, the Irken Empire, Zim remains oblivious to this fact. Accompanying him is a lovable creature named GIR, who masquerades as a green dog but serves as a rather functional data-retrieval system. Unusually, it’s a child, Dib, who picks up on Zim’s wicked schemes. Consequently, mayhem breaks loose, with the spectators ultimately reaping the benefits of the ensuing chaos.

You can stream “Invader Zim” on Paramount+, whereas “Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus!” is available for streaming on Netflix.

6) The Zeta Project

The Zeta Project is an engaging series, as it shares a common origin with another DC animated series, Batman Beyond, which also had its run cut short. Unfortunately, this captivating series spanned only two seasons and was constantly teetering on the brink of cancellation throughout its airtime, mainly due to the challenging circumstances surrounding its debut.

As a follower, I’m engaged with the thrilling narrative of The Zeta Project, which centers around two intriguing characters: Infiltration Unit Zeta, a humanoid synthoid, and Rosalie (Ro) Rowan. Initially, Zeta was engineered for assassinations, but as it developed self-awareness, it began to question its purpose. Yes, you could say Zeta experienced an existential dilemma, but fortunately, Ro was always by its side, offering support.

7) Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

Over time, numerous animated series featuring the Avengers have been produced, such as “Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.” Contrary to popular belief that the show was officially cancelled, it wasn’t. Instead, it wasn’t renewed for another season. Despite having plans for more episodes, Marvel decided to focus on a different project, titled “Avengers Assemble,” which took center stage.

This animated series, titled “Avengers: Earth’s Strongest Heroes”, gathered an array of beloved characters such as Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, Captain America, and Hawkeye. Predictably, it featured both exhilarating peaks and challenging valleys, delving into unforgettable storylines like the one involving Ultron. The show was smartly written and boasted numerous unexpectedly impactful scenes.

Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is available to stream on Disney+.

8) Wander Over Yonder

Occasionally, certain shows conclude without providing closure, and “Wander Over Yander” falls into this category. The series didn’t receive a fitting farewell, leaving fans puzzled as to why Disney chose to discontinue it. Perhaps this unexplained ending might signal a future revival.

The animated series titled “Wander Over Yonder” centers around a character named Wander who, as his name suggests, is a wanderer. Accompanied by his friend Sylvia, they journey through the universe, leaping from one planet to another, immersing themselves in different adventures. The show has an episodic approach to adventure and has been appreciated by viewers for its two seasons that were produced.

Wander Over Yonder is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.

9) The Spectacular Spider-Man

Is it becoming apparent to you that many animated superhero series on this list don’t last long before they end? One notable exception is “The Spectacular Spider-Man,” a beloved cartoon among fans. Critics also appreciated it, which makes its premature conclusion all the more surprising. The reason for its short life may have been due to timing, as Disney was acquiring Marvel’s rights around that time. Interestingly, there were plans for five seasons of this show, so fans were left wanting more.

The Amazing Spider-Man didn’t shy away from presenting this iconic character in a somewhat unique perspective for the big screen. It leans towards a more mature tone compared to other adaptations, blending drama, action, and the signature humor of Spider-Man seamlessly. The narrative unfolds during Peter Parker’s initial phase, where he grapples with managing both his high school life and superhero responsibilities. Initially, each season was intended to span a single academic term, but as we know, things don’t always go according to plan.

10) The Owl House

Although The Owl House may appear as if it’s not cancelled due to its well-executed ending and finale, the truth is creator Dana Terrace received advance notice of the cancellation, which allowed her to incorporate the finale before it was too late. Fans appreciate this effort, but they can’t help but wish that the show could have continued in its original format and rhythm as intended.

In “The Owl House,” we follow the enchanting journey of Luz Noceda, a girl who unwittingly ends up in the mystical Demon Realm. Fear not, she manages to forge friendships with several inhabitants, including Eda Clawthrone and King. The show garnered a devoted fanbase, in part because of its inclusive representation of LGBTQ+ characters. The third season of “The Owl House” was composed of three extended episodes, allowing the series to conclude without any unresolved plot twists.

The Owl House is available to stream on Disney+.
