Goku from Dragon Ball is well-known as one of the most powerful characters in anime. He consistently grows stronger as challenges increase, and it’s become a running joke to wonder if other strong anime characters could ever defeat him.
Goku is incredibly powerful, but several characters in Dragon Ball are actually stronger. Plus, many anime characters overall could easily defeat him. Some are particularly notable, as they surpass even Goku’s immense power level.
10 Najimi Ajimu (Medaka Box)

Najimi Ajimu, who also goes by Anshin’in-san, is a central villain in the anime Medaka Box. After being bored for an incredibly long time—trillions of years, in fact—Najimi created a dangerous plan called the Flask Plan. This plan gave students at Hakoniwa Academy special powers, all in the hopes of finding someone who could finally challenge and defeat her, ending her endless boredom.
Najimi Ajimu is known for having an unbelievably vast number of powers – over 12 quadrillion, in fact! These include ridiculously strong abilities like splitting atoms and even reversing cause and effect. The anime didn’t show it, but the only one who could potentially beat her was Iihiko Shishime, who is equally powerful. This makes Najimi one of the strongest characters in all of fiction, almost to a comical degree.
9) Lina Inverse (Slayers)

Lina Inverse is the main character in the anime series Slayers. She’s a powerful sorceress known for both her incredible magical abilities and her quick temper. While Lina and her companions usually look out for themselves – and Lina is often the most self-centered – she surprisingly ends up saving the world quite often, much to her frustration.
I’ve always been amazed by Lina Inverse. She might not be some prophesied hero, but she’s incredibly strong. What really stands out is her signature spell, Giga Slave – she actually invented it when she was a kid! And it’s not just any spell; at full power, it could wipe out the entire universe. Even when she’s not at her peak, Giga Slave is enough to take down the toughest enemies in the Slayers world. It’s honestly the best example of just how powerful she truly is.
8) Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon)

Sailor Moon is the main character in the animated series of the same name. When dangerous monsters attack her city, a young girl named Usagi Tsukino gains the ability to transform into Sailor Moon and defend her home. She soon discovers this power connects her to past lives – not just her own, but also those of her friends and her love interest, Tuxedo Mask.
At the beginning of Sailor Moon, the characters aren’t incredibly powerful, but as the story goes on, Usagi’s abilities grow dramatically. She eventually becomes strong enough to easily manipulate time and space, and even change reality itself. Both Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball were hugely influential anime in the 90s, so it makes sense that Usagi becomes as powerful as, or even more powerful than, Goku.
7) Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Haruhi Suzumiya is the main character in the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. She appears to be just a quirky teenager, but secretly, she has incredible powers that could alter reality. Her friends constantly try to manage her abilities by going along with her unpredictable requests.
While Haruhi wouldn’t win in a straight-up physical fight against Goku, her powers allow her to change reality itself. This means she could defeat him simply by thinking it, making her one of the most effective characters capable of beating someone as powerful as Goku.
6) Yuki Nagato (The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Yuki Nagato is a central character in the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. While she often appears as a shy, bookish girl, she’s actually an alien working for a powerful group called the Data Integration Thought Entity. This group is made up of intelligent data that wants to study Haruhi’s unique abilities and see if they can evolve on their own.
Yuki is a powerful character because she’s incredibly strong and can bend space itself by controlling information. She can even take Haruhi’s reality-altering abilities, making humanoids like her the most formidable beings in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
5) Madoka Kaname (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Madoka Kaname is the central character in the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She discovers she could become a magical girl with the power to defend her town from Witches. However, as she considers this possibility, she soon realizes the harsh realities that come with being a magical girl.
Madoka possessed immense natural power, which was amplified by Homura’s time travel. She ultimately became the strongest magical girl, and her wish allowed her to reshape reality and become a goddess. A final movie is planned, and fans hope it will showcase even more of Madoka’s incredible abilities.
4) Bernkastel (Umineko When They Cry)

Bernkastel is a powerful and manipulative witch who serves as a key villain in the anime series Umineko When They Cry. Though she initially appears to help Battler against Beatrice, it quickly becomes evident that she’s driven by her own selfish desires and enjoys causing pain, particularly to those she opposes. She’s essentially a cruel and unpredictable character who gets pleasure from others’ suffering.
Bernkastel is an incredibly powerful character who can not only alter probabilities to ensure her victory, but also destroy entire universes on a whim by manipulating reality itself. While the Umineko anime doesn’t showcase her full power, those familiar with the manga or visual novel understand just how dangerous she truly is.
3) Simon (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)

Simon is the central character in the anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Along with his close friend Kamina, he begins a battle to reclaim Earth from the Spiral Army. Though he starts as Kamina’s helper, Simon quickly evolves into a hero who surpasses even Kamina, ultimately taking on the responsibility for the entire universe’s fate.
As Simon becomes more skilled with Spiral Power, his abilities reach unbelievable levels – he can obliterate galaxies, alter the flow of time, and even construct a being bigger than the entire universe. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is famous for its extreme and exaggerated style, and Simon’s immense power is a perfect example of that.
2) Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo (Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo)

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is the main character in the animated series of the same name. He lives in a world threatened by the Chrome Dome Empire, who want to shave everyone’s heads! Bobobo fights back using his unusual Nose Hair Fist, and with the help of his quirky friends, he might just be able to save the world from total baldness.
Bobobo is a comedy anime that doesn’t worry much about making sense. It prioritizes jokes, which means the main character does unbelievably powerful things – like destroying stars or moving planets – purely for comedic effect. While characters like this can be hard to compare to others in terms of strength, it’s clear that Bobobo is one of the most powerful characters in all of anime.
1) Arale Norimaki (Dr. Slump)

Arale Norimaki is the main character in the animated series Dr. Slump. She’s a robot girl built by the quirky inventor Senbei Norimaki, who lives in Penguin Village. The show follows Arale’s funny adventures with the village’s unusual residents, and her innocence combined with incredible powers often both cause and solve problems.
Because Dr. Slump is a comedy series, its main character, Arale, regularly performs incredibly over-the-top feats of strength that don’t make sense. When she appears in Dragon Ball, she’s consistently shown to be a powerful opponent. Very few characters in any fictional work have abilities like hers, whether played for laughs or not, which is why many fans consider Arale the strongest anime character, capable of defeating even Goku.
