It’s a well-known trope in comic books that characters rarely stay dead. Heroes and villains often return from the grave, sometimes just months or years after seemingly dying. While DC and Marvel use this to keep popular characters and storylines going, not everyone gets a second chance. Though uncommon, a few heroes have experienced truly permanent deaths. Occasionally, they might reappear as ghosts or undead creatures, but they never fully return to life as they once were. For these characters, death truly is the end.
While many heroes in DC and Marvel comics eventually return from the dead, some have remained gone for much longer – years, even decades – and don’t seem to be coming back anytime soon.
10) Pandora
As a long-time comics fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Pandora. The story goes that she accidentally unleashed all sorts of evil – the Seven Deadly Sins, specifically – on the world by opening that infamous box. As punishment, she was cursed to wander the Earth forever, marked by these burning scars. What’s really cool is that she’s been a behind-the-scenes player for ages, even influencing the big New 52 reboot that brought the DC, Wildstorm, and Vertigo universes together. She was central to the Trinity War storyline, which ultimately led to the Crime Syndicate invading. Sadly, her story ended pretty abruptly in 2016 when Doctor Manhattan, being the all-powerful being he is, just… turned her to ash. He needed to freely change the timeline, and she was the obstacle.
9) White Tiger
Hector Ayala, also known as White Tiger, was a superhero who fought crime using his martial arts skills. He gained increased strength, speed, and senses from a magical amulet. After a period of retirement, Hector briefly returned as White Tiger in 2003 to stop a robbery, but the criminals escaped, and a police officer was killed. Despite being defended by Daredevil, Hector was wrongly convicted of the officer’s death. While trying to escape, he was fatally shot by the police. The role of White Tiger was later taken on by Hector’s niece, Angela del Toro, and eventually by his sister, Ava Ayala.
8) Starman
Ted Knight was the original Starman, a Golden Age hero and the first to use the powerful Cosmic Rod. A gifted scientist, Ted invented the Rod, which gave him abilities like flight, force fields, laser blasts, and the power to create objects out of energy. He became a superhero, joined the Justice Society, and fought crime for decades before tragically being killed by the Mist in 2000. Since then, several people – including his sons, David and Jack Knight – have taken up the mantle and wielded the Cosmic Rod. Currently, Courtney Whitmore, known as Stargirl, possesses the Rod. While Ted Knight has appeared in flashbacks and stories about the past, he hasn’t been fully brought back to life.
7) Swordsman
I’ve always been fascinated by Jacques DuQuesne, Hawkeye’s mentor and a truly complex figure. He wasn’t just a master swordsman, but a criminal who actually fought the Avengers and Clint at one point. It was incredible to see him turn things around and eventually join the good guys, becoming an Avenger himself! His sacrifice to save Mantis from Kang the Conqueror was heartbreaking, but it showed the hero he’d become. And then things got really strange – the Cotati replaced him with a plant copy! Even after that, he kept coming back – resurrected as an undead warrior, fighting with the Legion of the Unliving and even the Undead Avengers! Thankfully, after the Chaos War ended in 2011, he finally found peace and was allowed to rest. It’s a wild story, but it really highlights what a unique and compelling character Jacques was.
6) Zatara
Giovanni Zatara was a powerful magician and sorcerer who rose to prominence during and after World War II. He tragically died in 1986 while fighting a being called the Great Darkness. His legacy lived on through his daughter, Zatanna, who became a major magical hero in DC Comics. While DC Comics has been reimagined several times, Zatara has consistently remained deceased, with Zatanna carrying on his magical tradition. However, his spirit occasionally appears to offer guidance to his daughter.
5) Goliath
I always thought Black Goliath was a really cool hero! He was good friends with Ant-Man, Hank Pym, and actually figured out how to make those size-changing Pym Particles himself. That’s how he became Black Goliath, though he eventually just went by Goliath. He fought with some of the biggest names in the Marvel Universe, like the Champions and Defenders. It was so tragic when, during the Civil War storyline, he sided with Captain America against the government’s registration act. Then, when Iron Man brought out this crazy Thor robot, Ragnarok, to stop them, it went haywire and… well, it killed Bill. It was a huge loss, but thankfully, his nephew Tom ended up carrying on his legacy as Goliath, which was awesome to see.
4) Tomar-Re
Tomar-Re was a pioneering Green Lantern from another planet in DC Comics, quickly becoming one of the Corps’ most respected heroes. He served as a mentor and friend to Hal Jordan for many years and even tried, unsuccessfully, to save the planet Krypton. Tomar-Re tragically died during the 1986 Crisis on Infinite Earths event when the villain Goldface broke his neck. Before he passed, he passed his Green Lantern ring to John Stewart. Tomar-Re’s legacy continued through his son, Tomar-Tu, though Tomar-Tu later turned against the Green Lanterns and joined the Darkstars, a dangerous group.
3) Valkyrie
Brunnhilde was a powerful warrior and the leader of the Valkyries, Asgard’s elite fighters who brought fallen heroes to Valhalla. She was also a long-standing member of both the Avengers and Defenders teams. During the 2019 War of the Realms event, the villain Malekith launched an attack on all ten realms. Brunnhilde and her Valkyries bravely fought to allow the Avengers and Asgardian armies to escape, but they were tragically killed by Malekith. After her death, Jane Foster stepped up to become the new leader of the Valkyries.
2) Dove
Don Hall was the first hero known as Dove, fighting crime with his brother Hank, who went by the name Hawk. They represented peace and war, with Don being the more peaceful of the two. The brothers often teamed up with other DC heroes, like the Teen Titans. Don tragically died during the Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1986, giving his life to save a child from a dangerous creature serving the villain Anti-Monitor. Hank was deeply affected by Don’s death and became a more aggressive and unpredictable hero. Fortunately, Dawn Granger stepped in as the new Dove, becoming Hank’s partner and helping him cope with his grief and anger.
1) Captain Marvel
Captain Mar-Vell was the original Captain Marvel, a powerful Kree hero who dedicated years to protecting Earth and fighting alongside the Avengers. He tragically developed cancer after being exposed to dangerous radiation during a battle with the villain Nitro. Though the Kree offered to save him if he turned against humanity, Mar-Vell bravely refused and passed away in 1982. While he’s been briefly brought back to life a few times, it was only as a powerless, undead being. More recently, in 2012, he briefly regained control and sacrificed himself to destroy the powerful Phoenix Force, and hasn’t been seen since.
