The anime Chainsaw Man is full of surprises, intense battles for power, and surprisingly deep emotions, all following Denji, a hero who simply wants a normal life. Before you see the new movie, Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc, it’s a good idea to remember the important characters, agreements, and dangers from the first season. The Reze arc introduces a key character in Denji’s story, so understanding his relationships, the costs he’s paid, and the constant threats around him—especially from those who want his unique heart—is crucial.
Understanding the inner workings of the Public Safety division and the full significance of Denji’s fate will make this exciting new installment even more impactful, adding to an already action-packed story.
10) The Concept of a Hybrid Devil

Hybrids are exceptionally rare individuals created when a human and a devil combine. They generally look and think like humans, though they can transform. Unlike Fiends – devils who control a human body – hybrids can usually revert to their human appearance and often have a unique devilish trait, such as Denji’s pull-cord, which unlocks their full devil powers.
These individuals are, for all intents and purposes, immortal. As long as they have access to blood, they can heal from almost any injury, even complete destruction. This incredible ability makes them both valuable and frightening to humans and devils alike, often placing them in the middle of conflicts. Their very existence challenges the established order of the world.
9) Allies and Other Devils

Working with the special division introduced Denji to a variety of allies, both human and otherwise. He fought alongside humans like Aki Hayakawa and Kobeni Higashiyama, who were dedicated to battling Devils. Denji also teamed up with Fiends, such as Power, a Blood Fiend. Fiends are Devils who possess human bodies, which drastically alters their appearance and usually diminishes their intelligence.
Besides the Fiends, other devils – such as the Angel Devil – assist Public Safety and report directly to Makima. Although these partnerships are needed to fight bigger dangers, they’re based on fragile trust. Devils are usually focused on their own goals, and their allegiance can change quickly depending on what benefits them most.
8) The Gun Devil

The Gun Devil is an incredibly dangerous and destructive being, responsible for a global catastrophe thirteen years before the start of the series. This event killed millions in just five minutes. Because of this, Public Safety’s main goal is to collect any parts of its body or information about its whereabouts, as it poses the biggest threat to humanity’s survival.
Aki Hayakawa has a deeply personal reason to hunt the Gun Devil – it killed his entire family. This tragedy drives everything he does, and he’s willing to take extreme risks and make dangerous deals with devils, all in the hope of finally finding and destroying the Gun Devil and ending its threat.
7) Aki’s Deal With the Future Devil

I witnessed Aki make a desperate deal. Driven by a burning need to avenge his family, he bargained with an incredibly powerful devil – the Future Devil. The price? His right eye, which the devil took over, giving Aki the ability to see a few seconds ahead. It was a heavy cost, though – he essentially traded years of his life for this power.
This agreement constantly reminds us how much power costs and how desperate Aki is. Each time he uses his special vision, he risks shortening his life, showing just how strongly he’s committed to defeating the Gun Devil, no matter the cost.
6) Denji’s Dream Life

Even though Denji is a powerful being – a human-devil hybrid who fights in world-ending battles – his biggest wish is surprisingly simple: he wants a normal life and a girlfriend. This desire highlights the fact that he’s still a teenager, and it’s his way of rebelling against the extreme poverty and loneliness he experienced before.
He doesn’t ask for much – just simple comforts like a good night’s sleep, tasty food, and meaningful connections with others. These everyday desires are what truly motivate him, offering a sense of normalcy and stability in the face of the frightening and unpredictable world of demons he inhabits. He’s driven more by these personal needs than by any feeling of obligation.
5) Division 4’s Main Trio

The heart of the story lies in the unusual bond between Denji and his two companions: Power, a Blood Fiend, and Aki, a determined devil hunter. Initially just reluctant colleagues, the three gradually form a real, though incredibly messy, family dynamic.
Aki often feels overwhelmed as he tries to keep things together with his chaotic roommates, Denji and Power. Despite being a bit strange and struggling to fit in, Denji and Power have become very close, like siblings, and depend on each other to cope with their dangerous and unusual jobs. Though Special Division 4 has other members, Aki, Denji, and Power are the core of the team.
4) Makima’s Mysterious Ulterior Motive

Makima leads Special Division 4 and acts as Denji’s boss, quickly establishing herself as the most mysterious and influential character in the first season. Her composed demeanor and skillful manipulation hint that she has a much larger, hidden agenda beyond just keeping people safe from devils.
I’ve been watching Makima, and it’s clear she’s manipulating Denji. She dangles the idea of a normal life in front of him to keep him obedient and under her control, but I can’t quite figure out what she’s really after. There’s definitely something not human about her – she walked away from a point-blank shooting like it was nothing. The anime hasn’t explained her yellow eyes yet, and I suspect they hold the key to understanding her true nature.
3) Angel Devil’s Unique Power

Angel Devil is a strong but laid-back devil who works for Makima in Division 4. He’s generally gentle, sometimes appearing lazy. His ability is extremely dangerous – he can steal years from a person’s life with just a touch, and then turn that stolen life force into a deadly sword.
This skill makes him both incredibly important to the overall conflict and a frightening threat. While he’s hesitant to use his abilities and surprisingly mild-mannered, these traits highlight the isolation and loneliness that come with possessing such dangerous power.
2) The Shark Fiend

Beam, also known as the Shark Fiend, is part of Division 4 and one of Denji’s closest friends, despite being a non-human character. When he transforms into his fiend form, Beam gains a shark head and can swim through solid materials, like concrete.
Beam is extremely loyal to Denji, showing him deep respect and even treating him like a god. His straightforward and unwavering support makes him a valuable, though sometimes surprising, ally. Beam’s genuine devotion highlights the fact that not everyone in Denji’s life has his best interests at heart.
1) Everyone Wants Denji’s Heart

It’s crucial to remember that the devil living inside Denji isn’t just any devil – it’s the incredibly powerful Chainsaw Devil, who Denji knew as Pochita. Because of its strength and unusual past, many dangerous groups, devils, and people are trying to capture Denji and take his heart.
The core of Denji’s struggles—and the reason his enemies will stop at nothing to get to him—is a powerful entity within him. This being, the cute but dangerous Chainsaw Devil, merged with his heart to save his life, and now Denji’s destiny is forever linked to the fate of the world. Enemies will use any tactic—tricks, pain, even starting wars—to try and take it from him.
