Watching the end of the Shibuya Incident arc in *Jujutsu Kaisen* felt like a huge turning point. So many sorcerers were left reeling and vulnerable, especially with Satoru Gojo gone. Now, as things calm down and new threats appear, it’s becoming clear that Yuta Okkotsu is going to be a central figure. He’s been working quietly in the background, but his story is incredibly important for the upcoming third season. In fact, the first arc of Season 3, called “Execution,” directly connects to a promise Yuta made at the end of Season 2. To really understand what’s going to happen next-all the intense fights, secrets, and life-or-death situations-you need to know Yuta’s strengths, his past, and who he’s connected to.
Yuta’s significant role in Season 3 of *Jujutsu Kaisen* suggests a major power increase and bad news for those who oppose him.
10) He is One of Only Four Special Grade Sorcerers

Yuta is an exceptionally powerful jujutsu sorcerer, holding the highest possible rank of Special Grade. This rank is reserved for those with immense cursed energy and techniques, capable of defeating any cursed spirit. It marks him as one of the strongest jujutsu sorcerers in the world.
This highly selective club consists of just four members. The others are Satoru Gojo, who is currently unable to act, Suguru Geto (who is deceased, but whose body is now controlled by an ancient sorcerer utilizing Geto’s unique abilities), and Yuki Tsukumo, a secretive woman striving to change the world of jujutsu. Being included with these powerful individuals proves that Yuta is among the strongest sorcerers Jujutsu High has ever produced.
9) He Can Copy Any Cursed Technique He Sees

Yuta’s most frightening ability, for anyone fighting against him, is his power to learn and use any cursed technique he sees. This incredibly rare skill lets him quickly adjust to opponents and build a constantly growing collection of techniques. It makes him very unpredictable in battle, and he can even use the powerful cursed speech technique from the Inumaki clan.
His power comes from his connection to Rika, a powerful cursed spirit who is bound to him. While how he copies techniques is complicated – like a lot of things in *Jujutsu Kaisen* – and often requires Rika’s help, this ability allows him to quickly adapt to any opponent, making it hard for anyone to defeat him.
8) His Childhood Best Friend Became a Special Grade Curse

Yuta’s unique ability is rooted in a painful past. When he was eleven years old, his best friend, Rika Orimoto, died in a terrible traffic accident right before his eyes. Overwhelmed by grief and shock, Yuta unknowingly cursed her spirit, unable to come to terms with her death.
The curse transformed Rika into a tremendously powerful and vengeful Cursed Spirit, dubbed the “Queen of Curses.” This spirit deeply protected Yuta and was originally the reason for his incredible power and uncontrollable anger. He later learned to manage her influence through training with Gojo at Jujutsu High.
7) He Was Absent in the First Two Seasons For Good Reason

The backstory of Yuta Okkotsu is revealed in the movie *Jujutsu Kaisen: 0*. The film shows his difficult first year at Jujutsu High, after which he disappears from the main storyline for the first two seasons. This wasn’t a mistake; Gojo sent him on a long-term mission to Africa to continue his training and utilize his considerable abilities.
Yuta’s partner for this mission was Miguel, a skilled sorcerer from another country who had once battled Gojo. They were sent to find and retrieve exceptionally powerful cursed tools and artifacts. However, the anime doesn’t explain why Gojo specifically chose Yuta for this task.
6) He Has Nearly Unlimted Cursed Energy

Yuta has an incredibly large amount of cursed energy, a naturally occurring power that’s very uncommon, even among the strongest sorcerers. This vast reserve lets him use his techniques over and over again and fight for much longer than most. Thanks to training with Gojo, he’s also become remarkably skilled at controlling his energy.
Surprisingly, Yuta Okkotsu has more cursed energy than even Satoru Gojo, the world’s strongest sorcerer. Although Gojo’s technique, Limitless, is more effective and potent, Yuta possesses a vastly larger energy pool. This allows him to use large, powerful techniques and create strong barriers continuously without getting tired.

Yuta possesses incredible power, and part of the reason lies in his family history. He’s a descendant of Michizane Sugawara, a legendary and powerful sorcerer considered one of Japan’s three most famous vengeful spirits. This connection to Sugawara gives Yuta access to a strong and ancient source of magical energy and tradition within the jujutsu world.
Yuta and Gojo share a distant family connection through a common ancestor. This shared lineage likely contributes to why they’re both considered incredibly powerful sorcerers, hinting that their amazing abilities are partly passed down through their family history.
4) He is Just as Overpowered as Gojo

Yuta, like Gojo, is a classic example of an incredibly powerful character in action-packed stories. He has a huge amount of energy, can copy other people’s abilities, and is skilled enough to control even the most dangerous curses. This makes him a formidable opponent who can usually win fights without much difficulty. During the chaotic events of the Shibuya Incident, his absence on a mission overseas was keenly felt. Had Yuta been there, trapping Gojo wouldn’t have been such a significant advantage for the enemies they were facing.
Yuta is significantly more powerful than Yuji Itadori, the series’ main character. While Yuji relies on hard work, determination, and physical strength to grow stronger, Yuta possesses a natural and immense level of cursed energy. His return in Season 3 will introduce a character capable of countering the overwhelming power of the season’s villain, Kenjaku.
3) He Returned in the Closing Moment of Season 2 With a Mission

Yuta returned to action after a long absence, following the events of *Jujutsu Kaisen: 0* and the devastating Shibuya Incident. He effortlessly saved a young girl from a dangerous curse, then confronted the leaders of the Jujutsu world. These elders were exploiting the resulting chaos to strengthen their control and unfairly condemn people they saw as enemies – including Gojo and Yuji.
In a surprising twist at the end of Season 2, Yuta publicly promised his superiors that he would personally kill Yuji Itadori. This came as a shock because Yuta is usually a gentle and considerate student at Jujutsu High, and is highly regarded by Gojo. Yuta justified his sudden hostility by pointing to Toge Inumaki’s injury-the loss of an arm-but his real reasons will likely be revealed in Season 3.
2) He Defeated Geto as a First Year

Yuta’s first year as a sorcerer was defined by a massive attack on Tokyo – known as the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons – which quickly established him as an incredibly powerful, Special Grade Sorcerer. It turns out Geto planned the whole thing as a diversion. His goal was to lure strong sorcerers away from Jujutsu High, leaving Yuta vulnerable so he could confront him, take Rika, and steal her unique abilities.
During the final battle, Yuta unleashed his full power and defeated Geto, dealing a fatal blow. This win was crucial for Yuta’s growth as a sorcerer, helping him come to terms with Rika’s death and, in doing so, release her spirit from the curse he’d unintentionally created years before.
1) He is a Skilled Swordsman

Yuta is a formidable fighter with a large amount of cursed energy and a variety of powerful techniques. He’s also excellent in hand-to-hand combat, primarily using a katana. He always carries this sword and is incredibly skilled with it, often combining blade strikes with his cursed energy to maximize their impact.
Early in his training, someone proposed using a weapon to help him control his cursed energy, which he was still learning to manage. Yuta quickly became proficient with the katana, and this skill made him a well-rounded fighter. He frequently combines his swordsmanship with the cursed techniques he can replicate, demonstrating that he’s a skilled combatant with more than just brute strength.
