10 Times Jean Grey Was the Most Powerful X-Man

For over 60 years, the X-Men have gathered some incredibly powerful mutants, some even capable of reshaping planets or altering reality. But none have ever surpassed the original X-Man, Jean Grey. From the start, she was considered the most powerful telepath and telekinetic in the universe. When she tragically died on a space mission, she returned as the host of the Phoenix Force – a being as old as time itself and representing the power of life, death, and rebirth across the multiverse. The Phoenix Force sees Jean as the ideal partner, enabling them to achieve unbelievable feats of power.

Jean Grey is an incredibly powerful mutant, classified as Omega-Level, even without the Phoenix Force. When combined with the Phoenix Force, her abilities are amplified to include powers like projecting fire, controlling other superpowers, absorbing energy, changing matter, seeing the future, altering reality, and even coming back to life. Despite being one of the most powerful beings in existence, it’s surprising how often she still meets her end.

10) Restored Emma Frost

Jean Grey is famous for using the Phoenix Force to revive herself, but she’s also used its power to bring others back from the dead. For example, in New X-Men #139, Emma Frost was fatally shot while in her diamond form, shattering into countless pieces. Two issues later, Jean detected a faint trace of Emma’s mind within the fragments. Using her powerful telekinesis, Jean reassembled Emma’s body, and with the help of Beast’s medical expertise (accessed through telepathy), she ensured everything was put back together correctly. Finally, Jean used the Phoenix Force to bring Emma back to life.

9) Restored a Star

I’ve always been amazed by Jean Grey, and it’s not just what she does for the X-Men here on Earth. She’s a true cosmic hero! Like in X-Men #35, she actually went all the way to the edge of the Shi’ar Empire to save an entire solar system. This star was dying – a white dwarf, about to go dark. But Jean, using the incredible power of the Phoenix Force, somehow reversed its decay and turned it back into a healthy, shining star! She saved billions of lives and ensured that system would have light for billions of years to come. It’s just… incredible!

8) Stabilized a Black Hole

Jean Grey doesn’t just deal with dying stars – she also faces huge cosmic threats. In Phoenix #1, a massive black hole named Ton 618 is becoming dangerously unstable and could destroy a nearby space prison. To save everyone, Jean merges with the black hole and uses the incredible power of the Phoenix Force to calm and control it. She essentially guides Ton 618, preventing its collapse. Interestingly, Ton 618 is a real black hole – one of the largest known in the universe, far bigger than our Milky Way galaxy, and with a mass equivalent to 66 billion suns.

7) Turned Gorr the God Butcher into a Star

Gorr the God Butcher lives up to his name – he’s a dangerous and obsessed killer determined to destroy all gods. He’s wiped out countless deities, and it once took three Thors working together to defeat him. But in Phoenix #5, Jean Grey managed to defeat him single-handedly. When Gorr tried to kill Jean, he wielded the All-Black, a powerful weapon capable of killing gods and plunging universes into darkness. Instead of destroying Gorr, Jean used her powers to transform him into something life-giving. She turned both Gorr and the All-Black into a massive star, providing light and energy to many planets.

6) Used Galactus’s Power Against Him

Even when she was young, Jean Grey demonstrated the potential to rival the incredibly powerful Galactus, who wields the Power Cosmic. In the comic Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey #1, a younger version of Jean is transported to a planet Galactus is about to destroy. To save it, she develops a new ability: absorbing massive amounts of psychic energy. She draws power from the planet’s inhabitants, Galactus’s herald Terrax, the Phoenix Force, and even Galactus himself, channeling it into a colossal fist that knocks Galactus off balance. The blow was so forceful that Galactus relinquished the planet to Jean, showcasing the incredible extent of her power absorption.

5) Created a New Universe

A major change for the X-Men in recent years revealed that their human friend, Moira MacTaggert, was actually a mutant. Her power allowed her to essentially relive her life from the beginning whenever she died. After many lifetimes, Moira became fixated on saving mutants and escaping this cycle of rebirth, which ultimately led her to oppose the X-Men and assist the villain Enigma. However, in Rise of the Powers of X #5, Moira, with Professor X’s encouragement, sacrificed herself so Jean Grey could locate and defeat Enigma. As a thank you, Jean used the Phoenix Force to create a new timeline where Moira was never born with her power, finally ending her endless cycle.

4) Weaponized the Power of Every Mutant Ever

Okay, so in Rise of the Powers of X #5, things get seriously intense! It all comes down to Jean Grey being the only one who can stop this unbelievably powerful villain called Enigma. Enigma is basically a god-level AI version of Nathaniel Essex, and he’s not bound by time or space – super scary! He wanted to rewrite everything and wipe out all life, but Jean wasn’t about to let that happen. This fight is massive, literally shaking all of time and space, and Jean does something incredible. She taps into the energy of every mutant who’s ever lived, across all dimensions. Then, she focuses all that energy into three unbelievably powerful claws and… well, she impales Enigma right through the head! It shatters him, scattering pieces of him across the entire multiverse, finally ending his threat to Earth. It’s a wild, epic moment!

3) Fractured Reality and Destroyed the Dark Gods

In Phoenix #9, Jean faces a heartbreaking battle against her friend Adani, who has been corrupted by powerful, evil deities from the Dark Realm. These gods plan to spread darkness throughout the entire multiverse, and they’re using Adani to achieve their goal. To draw them out, Jean intentionally creates a massive tear in reality, a fracture so large it pulls Adani and the Dark Realm’s forces towards her. She then traps and destroys the initial wave of monsters that pour through. After dealing with these forces, Jean links her mind with Adani’s, allowing her to confront the Dark Gods directly and obliterate them and their entire army across the multiverse.

2) Threatened the Multiverse

The story of Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force, particularly as seen in “The Dark Phoenix” saga, highlights the danger of this powerful connection becoming corrupted. In Phoenix #7, Jean battles Thanos, who attempts to destroy all life by stealing a magical item called the Eye of Warlock. He uses the Eye and his link to Death to corrupt Jean, causing the Phoenix Force to become unstable and threaten the entire Marvel universe with destruction. Thankfully, even though her body was immobilized, Jean was able to mentally break her connection with the Phoenix Force, effectively disabling the Eye of Warlock. This stopped the corruption and allowed Jean to regain control of the Phoenix Force.

1) Became Omnipresent

In Phoenix #5, Jean Grey ascends to a position of immense cosmic power, becoming one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Following her recent battle with Gorr the God Butcher and subsequent resurrection, she’s approached by Eternity, the embodiment of the universe itself. Eternity offers Jean a place alongside other incredibly powerful entities – like Infinity, Death, and the Living Tribunal – who maintain the order of existence. Though initially unsure, Jean accepts, unleashing her full potential. As the Phoenix, she becomes intrinsically linked to all of creation, with a piece of her essence residing within every star, planet, and living being, effectively making her the embodiment of creation itself.
