10 Times Superman Was DC Comics’ Most Powerful Hero

In 1938, Superman burst onto the scene, instantly defining the superhero archetype. Originally, he was strong enough to lift cars and jump over buildings, but his powers have grown immensely over time. Now, the most powerful hero in DC Comics can move planets with ease and fly faster than the speed of light. He’s evolved from stopping petty crimes to protecting entire universes. Despite his incredible abilities, Superman ultimately embodies the strength of the human spirit and the victory of good over evil.

Superman is known as one of the most powerful characters in fictional storytelling, easily achieving amazing feats across the universe. Even when DC Comics tried to make his powers more realistic with different story restarts, like Crisis on Infinite Earths and New 52, Superman always regained his full potential.

10) Sneezed Away a Solar System

The Silver Age of Superman comics was known for exaggerating his powers, sometimes to ridiculous levels. Even small things he did could cause huge problems. In one story, from Action Comics #273, the mischievous imp Mr. Mxyzptlk played a trick on Superman, giving him an unstoppable case of the sniffles. Realizing how dangerous this could be, Superman flew light-years into space to unleash a massive sneeze – which accidentally destroyed an entire, empty solar system. It’s safe to say a simple sneeze into his elbow would have prevented that disaster!

9) Held a Mini-Black Hole in His Hand

Black holes are among the most powerful forces in the universe, with gravity so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape. In the comic JLA #7, the Justice League encountered a device containing a tiny black hole during a mission. When the device shattered, the mini-black hole began to grow rapidly, threatening to engulf the entire solar system and beyond. Superman quickly intervened, grabbing the miniature black hole and holding it to prevent its expansion. Straining to contain its immense power, he flew at top speed to the nearest wormhole and threw the black hole inside, saving everyone from its destructive potential.

8) Pulled a Galaxy’s Worth of Planets

As a longtime comic book fan, one of the things that always blows my mind is just how casually powerful Superman was, even when he was still known as Superboy. I was reading Superboy #140 the other day, and it reminded me of this incredible feat: a whole galaxy was about to go kaput, threatening countless worlds. Superboy, without even seeming to try, hooked up a massive chain to every inhabited planet in that galaxy – and I mean every one – and literally towed them across the universe to safety! They never give an exact number, but we’re talking potentially hundreds of thousands of planets, each with billions of people on them. And for Superboy? It was basically like a fun afternoon activity. It really puts his power into perspective!

7) Punched Every Version of Brainiac at Once

In the DC Comics universe, the multiverse is a vast collection of endless worlds and realities. During the Futures End storyline, Brainiac gained immense power by absorbing technology and knowledge from across the multiverse, essentially becoming a god. Despite this incredible power, he continued his destructive habit of collecting cities and destroying planets. When Brainiac targeted New York City, Superman intervened. A massive battle ensued, leveling the surrounding buildings. Ultimately, Superman defeated Brainiac with a single, universe-spanning punch – a blow so powerful that every version of Brainiac throughout the infinite multiverse felt it.

6) Pulling Highfather’s Staff Out of the Source Wall

The Source Wall is an unbreakable barrier at the edge of the DC Multiverse. Anyone who touches it is permanently trapped. It has held countless incredibly powerful gods captive, including Perpetua, the being who created the entire multiverse, for billions of years. In the Superman/Batman story “Torment,” Darkseid’s follower Desaad brainwashed Superman into retrieving a staff belonging to Highfather, which was stuck in the Source Wall. Desaad wasn’t even sure Superman could do it, but through his immense strength and heat vision, the mind-controlled Superman managed to break through the Source Wall and pull the staff free.

5) Lifted the Spectre

The Spectre is an incredibly powerful being, representing the very wrath of God. When a psychic alien invaded his mind in JLA/Spectre: Soul War, the Spectre began falling towards Earth. To prevent widespread destruction, Superman and Wonder Woman grabbed his cloak, trying to slow his descent. It was a tremendous effort, as the Spectre’s body isn’t just physical – it’s a cosmic consciousness containing all of time. While Wonder Woman assisted, her strength has limits. In the end, she wasn’t even essential, as Superman was bearing the brunt of the Spectre’s immense, infinite weight – which remained infinite even with her help.

4) Lifted a Book of Infinite Pages

In the comic Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #1, Superman is shown lifting an impossibly heavy book with an infinite number of pages. While trapped in Limbo with Shazam, they discover this all-powerful book that holds every possible story. It’s not only endless in content but also weighs an infinite amount. Both heroes manage to hold and read from it, gaining knowledge about the multiverse. Similar to a previous feat with Wonder Woman and the Spectre, Shazam’s powers have limits, meaning Superman is primarily responsible for supporting the book’s immense weight and infinite pages.

3) Transcended Infinity

In DC Presents #29, Superman’s attempt to save Supergirl led him to perform incredible feats, even requiring divine intervention. After destroying Warworld, Superman found Supergirl unconscious and drifting in space. He pursued her with increasing speed, ultimately exceeding the limits of his universe. This incredible velocity brought him to the edge of Heaven itself, where he was stopped by the Spectre and the Presence, the DC Universe’s God. They explained that Superman’s speed nearly broke through the barriers separating life and death. This act demonstrated his boundless selflessness and immense power.

2) Restored Infinite Possible Future Timelines

In Superman #295, someone stole Superman’s costume, leading him to a possible future world called Earth-AD. There, a warrior named Jaxon had taken it and immediately fought Superman. Their battle was so powerful it caused ripples throughout the universe. Eventually, Jaxon realized Superman was stronger and gave the costume back. That’s when Xenofobe, an alien Green Lantern, revealed he was the original thief. He explained that the villain Time Trapper had erased all possible futures except Earth-AD. Xenofobe orchestrated the fight between Superman and Jaxon, believing the energy released would bring back the lost timelines.

1) Destroyed the World Forger’s Multiverse

World Forger, a powerful being capable of shaping reality, is responsible for creating and destroying entire universes. When he decided the existing DC Multiverse needed to be replaced, he built a new one. In Justice League #25, he trapped Superman in a desolate, starless void, but Superman broke free. As he flew through countless stars, gaining immense power, he headed straight for World Forger. Just as World Forger was about to eliminate the old multiverse and establish the new one, Superman intervened with a devastating punch. The blow was so forceful that it created a crater the size of a continent and completely obliterated the entire new multiverse World Forger had created.
