2026 promises to be a fantastic year for movies, with a lot of exciting films already scheduled for release. Plus, several promising projects have been announced for the future, giving movie lovers plenty to anticipate. While a good story idea often gets fans excited, perfect casting is just as important. Finding the right actor can really build buzz and make a movie even more anticipated before it even comes out.
Lots of exciting new movies are coming out, and the casting choices seem spot-on. Some actors were clearly chosen for a specific character, while others just naturally fit the genre thanks to their past work. Either way, these great casting announcements are building a lot of anticipation – we can’t wait to see how these actors bring their characters to life!
10) Charlize Theron in Apex

Charlize Theron is a fantastic choice for the lead role in the new survival thriller, Apex. She’s known for completely transforming herself for roles, and this action-packed movie seems tailor-made for her skills. In Apex, Theron plays a rock climber pursued by a dangerous man (Taron Egerton) in the wild. She’s perfect for the part of a lone hero battling to survive, and fans are eagerly awaiting its release on Netflix on April 24.
9) Ike Barinholtz in Artificial

Though it might be surprising, Ike Barinholtz is a brilliant choice to play Elon Musk in the upcoming movie, Artificial. The film, which stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, will cover the 2023 events surrounding Altman’s brief removal and reinstatement as CEO of OpenAI. Barinholtz excels at playing quirky, funny characters who are oblivious to how they appear to others, making him ideal for capturing Musk’s unique personality in this comedic drama. His portrayal is sure to be memorable.
8) Nicholas Galitzine in Masters of the Universe

The news that Nicholas Galitzine would play He-Man in the Masters of the Universe movie didn’t get a lot of attention at first, likely because he’s a relatively new face in the spotlight. However, the trailers have shown he’s a great fit for the role – he looks the part and clearly dedicated himself to it. He noticeably gained muscle for the part, transforming into the powerful hero fans expect. This has built a lot of excitement for the movie’s release on June 5th.
7) Jaafar Jackson in Michael

I’m so excited about the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic! I think they’ve absolutely nailed the casting – Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, is going to play him. It just makes so much sense! He looks incredibly like Michael, and having a family member in the role feels really special and adds a layer of authenticity. Honestly, it’s a brilliant move from both a filmmaking and marketing perspective. I can’t wait to see it when it comes out on April 24th!
6) Leonardo DiCaprio & Christian Bale in Heat 2

News about the actors joining the sequel to the thrilling crime film Heat is building a lot of excitement. Heat 2 is said to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, a combination many believe will do justice to Michael Mann’s 1995 classic. Reports suggest they’ll be playing the characters originally portrayed by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, and it seems like a perfect casting choice.
5) Jesse Plemons in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

The new Hunger Games prequel, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, will feature younger versions of familiar characters. The casting has been strong overall, but many fans are particularly excited about Jesse Plemons taking on the role of Plutarch Heavensbee – a character previously played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Plemons is a highly regarded actor, making this casting choice especially noteworthy. Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to be released on November 20, 2026.
4) Matt Damon in The Odyssey

The cast for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, is full of impressive actors, and many of the roles sound fantastic. But Matt Damon as Odysseus feels like a particularly brilliant choice. He’s consistently proven himself as a talented and adaptable leading man, and this historical epic seems like a perfect fit. Given his past work with Nolan, the movie – and his role specifically – has even more potential, making his casting ideal. The Odyssey is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2026.
3) Jason Momoa in Supergirl

The quick look at Jason Momoa as Lobo in the Supergirl trailer was enough to convince everyone he’s perfect for the part. His height, long hair, and talent for playing wild, scary characters make him a natural fit for the DC villain. Most DC fans agree he’s the ideal Lobo, and audiences are eagerly awaiting the June 26th release of Supergirl.
2) Dwayne Johnson in Moana

Disney’s live-action remakes have been hit or miss, but everyone seems to agree on one thing: Dwayne Johnson is perfect as Maui in the upcoming live-action Moana. He already voiced the character in the animated movie, has Samoan heritage, and physically embodies Maui, even sporting similar tattoos. It’s difficult to picture anyone else in the role, making him an ideal connection between the original and the new version.
1) Karl Urban in Mortal Kombat II

Video game adaptations often fall short, but the 2021 film Mortal Kombat pleasantly surprised viewers with its exciting action. The recent announcement that Karl Urban will play Johnny Cage in the sequel has created a lot of buzz, as he seems ideally cast in the role. Urban consistently brings both humor and charm to his performances, making his take on Johnny Cage a highly anticipated event. Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to be released on May 8, 2026.
