(Alternative version)

Prepare yourself for an unsettling exploration of some of the most deplorable mothers in anime. These characters may have captivated audiences, but their treatment of their children is downright horrific. Hang on tight as we dive into this list of terrible moms in anime – it’s going to be quite a rollercoaster ride!

1) Chika Hatori from The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Observing the circumstances, it’s no wonder that Chika Hatori, who passed her extraordinary Sleigh Beggy traits to her daughter Chise, struggled with maintaining a conventional life. Constantly haunted by fae beings during day and night, Yuuki Hatori (Chise’s father and Chika’s husband) made the hasty decision to escape with Fumiki (Chise’s brother), leaving no trace behind, thereby abandoning Chika and Chise to their own devices.

Overwhelmed by despair and desperation, Chika developed a deep-seated resentment towards her daughter, feeling that her presence only magnified their troubles with fae beings. The accumulated stress and misery became unbearable, causing Chika to lose her mind, lashing out at Chise with verbal abuse and even attempting to strangle her. However, when she regained consciousness, the weight of her actions and guilt became too heavy, leading her to take her own life, leaving Chise abandoned.

2) Akemi Hinazuki from Erased

When Satoru Fujinuma travels back in time to before his classmate Kayo Hinazuki was abducted and killed, one might expect Kayo’s mother to be a nurturing, concerned, and protective figure. Contrary to expectations, Akemi Hinazuki is a cruel and uncaring mother. Not only is she indifferent when her daughter eventually disappears, but prior to the kidnapping, she behaves quite cruelly towards Kayo.

In a cruel and horrific manner, Akemi subjected Kayo to neglect, physical abuse, imprisonment, and overall mistreatment, turning Kayo’s home into a wretched existence. Consequently, whenever possible, Kayo chooses to spend as much time as she can in the park, even until nightfall, to escape this torment. Regrettably, this habit of hers ultimately leads to her being kidnapped.

3) Saika Gasai from Future Diary

Initially, it’s puzzling to understand why Yuno Gasai behaves as a crazed yandere, but the story gradually reveals her backstory and upbringing that help explain her behavior. Notably, both of Yuno’s adoptive parents were less than ideal, but her mother was particularly abusive, contributing significantly to Yuno’s deteriorating mental health.

Observing closely, I noticed Saika’s relentless pursuit of perfection for Yuno was coupled with an unyielding harshness. Any perceived fault, no matter how trivial, was met with severe consequences, often confining Yuno within a cage, denying her food, and subjecting her to psychological torment.

4) Medusa Gorgon from Soul Eater

As a researcher and mother to Crona, Medusa is notoriously known for being a poor mother, and rightly so. She deliberately kept Crona secluded, employing cruel and psychologically damaging methods to mold Crona into an efficient killing machine and human shield. Beyond this, she even used her own child as a test subject in her research. In her quest to create the ultimate weapon, she injected her child with black blood that housed the soul of the demon sword Ragnarok, thereby granting Crona immense, destructive power.

By instilling fear and self-doubt while granting immense power, Medusa Gorgon managed to manipulate her own child, Crona, into betraying others and causing widespread harm. This makes Medusa one of the coldest, most manipulative, and ruthless mothers in anime history.

5) Zenith and Lilia Greyrat from Mushoku Tensei

In a scenario that might leave many shaking their heads in disbelief, I found myself witnessing an unusual decision. While it’s common sense for most to firmly decline cohabiting with a spouse involved in infidelity, Zenith Greyrat, despite the circumstances, chose otherwise. Faced with his son Rudeus’ guilt-induced plea due to inclement weather, Zenith made an unexpected concession: not only did he agree to house his unfaithful partner temporarily, but he also extended this arrangement indefinitely, even though she was now carrying another man’s child.

Zenith might have been deceived, but she shouldn’t escape blame entirely as she could have ended relationships with both cheaters during springtime instead of perpetuating the status quo. This would have shown Rudeus that actions bear consequences rather than continuing to mold him into a reflection of the poor character he had before reincarnation. As for Lilia, her actions are questionable at best, given she conceived a child under such distressing circumstances. The unfortunate offspring serves as a reminder of her betrayal towards the family who relied on her trust.

6) Hiromi Shiota from Assassination Classroom

Because Hiromi was unable to attain her personal goals and preferred image, she imposes her ideals on her child, Nagisa. However, Nagisa doesn’t fit the daughter that Hiromi envisioned. As a result, Hiromi strives to mold Nagisa into her ideal daughter as closely as possible. This includes insisting he grow his hair long and dressing him in more feminine clothes. She becomes aggressive when anyone challenges her parenting methods. In fact, she has contemplated going so far as to set fire to the school that Hiromi believes is responsible for Nagisa expressing his displeasure with her controlling behavior.

7) Dr. Naoko Akagi from Neon Genesis Evangelion

Dr. Naoko Akagi served as the head scientist at Gehirn, where she developed the Magi supercomputers and uploaded her own thoughts and character into them. Her daughter, Ritsuko, later assumed her role at NERV, the successor organization to Gehirn. Naoko designed the three Magi to embody her identity as a researcher, her maternal self, and her femininity. “I didn’t quite grasp her as a mother, but I held her in high esteem as a scientist.

In Ritsuko’s recollection, there was a strong dislike for her, not just because she was a woman, but more so due to the complex romantic entanglement between Gendo, Naoko, and herself. Despite Naoko appearing distant in her role as a mentor towards Ritsuko, she took this enmity a significant step further when she coldly killed the initial version of Rei as a child.

8) Emi Akezawa from Baki the Grappler

Initially, Emi Akezawa appeared to be a nurturing mother to her son Baki Hanma, encouraging his martial arts training and fostering his growth as a fighter. However, it was later unveiled that her apparent concern for him was merely a facade; in truth, her focus and affections had always been exclusively directed towards Baki’s father, Yuujirou Hanma.

Over time, the mask slipped, and it became evident to Baki that his mother’s affection had always been solely for his father, with no remaining love to offer him. Yet, what drew Yuujiro to her was her reverence for violence and thirst for bloodshed. This was the reason he selected her, intending to produce an offspring who could one day match his strength in combat.

9) Isabella from The Promised Neverland

As a bystander, I’ve witnessed the affection that all the orphaned kids have for Isabella, whom they call “Mom.” However, it appears her nurturing role conceals a much darker truth. The children are raised in isolation and are blissfully unaware of the world filled with ravenous demons that crave nothing more than to feast on their tender brains. This necessitates raising them like livestock, destined for slaughter. While it’s easy to empathize with her fear for her life, Isabella’s willingness to raise children as demon food is beyond redemption.

10) Ragyo Kiryuin from Kill la Kill

Known for her wickedness, arrogance, and ruthlessness, Ragyo Kiryuin is notoriously recognized as one of the most villainous mothers in anime history. As the mother of Satsuki and Ryuko, Ragyo appears to see people merely as tools to achieve her goals – even her own family members such as her husband and children.

In a position of great authority, Ragyo, who had been callous towards her own daughters and even harmed them severely, showcases her strength and character in a way that leaves no doubt about her control over others. This control, however, often takes a disturbingly cruel and twisted form of abuse.
