10 Worst Ways Marvel Supervillains Have Died

Marvel comics feature some truly cruel and violent villains, and occasionally they face fitting punishments. While death isn’t permanent for most characters in comics – villains often return – some meet especially gruesome ends and stay gone (for now). These villains usually die either at the hands of a ruthless anti-hero, or because they drive a good hero to seek extreme revenge. They’ve been ripped apart, burned, and even eaten, but considering the pain and destruction they’ve inflicted on others, it’s difficult to feel sympathy for them.

Marvel villains often meet gruesome ends, and some deaths are far more shocking and violent than others. Though many have returned from the brink, they likely remember the pain of their first defeat. However, certain villains have been killed so completely that resurrection is impossible. Here are some of the most shockingly final and brutal defeats in Marvel Comics history.

10) Spider-Man Rips Out Morlun’s Throat

As a huge Spider-Man fan, I always thought Morlun was one of his most terrifying foes. This guy isn’t your typical villain; he actively hunts people with spider-powers, and he’s already offed a bunch of alternate Spider-Men! He nearly wiped out our Spider-Man, but decided to prolong the fight, returning to finish the job while Peter was recovering in the hospital. It got really brutal when he attacked Mary Jane, even breaking her arm! That’s what really pushed Peter over the edge. Something primal kicked in, giving him this incredible burst of strength. He actually grew wrist spikes and pinned Morlun, and then… well, things got dark. Peter grew fangs and, in this shocking moment, ripped Morlun’s throat out, turning this vampire-like villain to dust. It was a truly intense and unforgettable showdown.

9) The Hulk Kills Reginald Fortean Twice

U.S. Army General Reginald Fortean tried to harness gamma radiation to defeat the Hulk, but his plan backfired horribly. After touching remnants of the villain Abomination, Fortean was absorbed and transformed into a new, massive monster himself. As this new Abomination, he actually killed the Hulk. However, in his final moments, the Hulk crushed Fortean’s head, dragging him into the afterlife. Because both were mutated by gamma radiation, they ended up in a special realm where they could be reborn. But Bruce Banner, while manifesting his Joe Fixit persona, prevented Fortean’s resurrection by permanently killing him.

8) Thanos Gets His Spine Ripped Out

Though Thanos is one of Marvel’s most terrifying villains, Doctor Doom proved to be his superior. During the Secret Wars storyline, Doom gained incredible power from the Beyonders and rebuilt the shattered multiverse into a place called Battleworld. Thanos survived the destruction and started causing trouble on Battleworld, which led to a confrontation with Doom. Despite lacking the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos confidently claimed he could defeat Doom. However, Doom quickly and decisively defeated Thanos by effortlessly ripping out his spine.

7) Wolverine Dismembers Sabretooth

Wolverine and Sabretooth share one of the most intense and bitter rivalries in comic book history. Sabretooth has spent his life tormenting Wolverine and those he cares about. After more than a century of fighting, their conflict ended violently when Sabretooth attacked Krakoa, resulting in a massacre. While usually equally matched, Wolverine had a powerful advantage: the Muramasa Blade. This unique sword weakens healing abilities, even for powerful mutants like Sabretooth. Using the blade and his claws, Wolverine systematically defeated Sabretooth, ultimately beheading him and finally avenging all of Sabretooth’s past victims.

6) Punisher Butchers Barracuda

The Punisher is one of the most ruthless anti-heroes in comic books. His enemies rarely survive encounters with him, often facing gruesome deaths. Surprisingly, Barracuda, the Punisher’s most dangerous foe, repeatedly escaped death and kept returning for revenge. But their conflict finally ended in a final battle. After Barracuda kidnapped the Punisher’s infant daughter, a violent gunfight turned into a hand-to-hand brawl. The Punisher savagely ripped off Barracuda’s nose and then chopped off both of his arms with an axe. He ultimately killed Barracuda by plunging the axe into his chest and then finishing him off with a full machine gun clip, completely destroying his head.

5) Ultimate Giant-Man Bites Off Blob’s Head

The Marvel storyline “Ultimatum” is widely considered one of the worst ever created, largely due to its shockingly violent depictions of character deaths. One particularly gruesome scene involves the Blob eating the Wasp, which Giant-Man witnesses. Enraged, Giant-Man retaliates by brutally biting the Blob’s head off, mirroring the Blob’s actions – though instead of swallowing, Giant-Man spits the head out.

4) Ma Gnucci gets Kicked into a Fire

Ma Gnucci, the leader of a powerful crime family, was one of the Punisher’s most brutal opponents. When the Punisher started destroying her criminal empire and killing her relatives, Ma attempted to trap him at a zoo. The plan backfired horribly; the Punisher killed her bodyguards and left her severely injured in the polar bear enclosure, where the bears devoured her arms and legs. Undeterred, Ma tried to kill the Punisher again, but he ensured her death by kicking her into a burning building. Unable to move without limbs, she perished in the flames, screaming in pain.

3) Birds Devour Ero

During a near-fatal battle with Morlun, Spider-Man was saved by a mystical spider entity called the Other, which allowed him to essentially be reborn. However, Spider-Man resisted fully embracing his spider instincts, causing the Other to appear as a swarm of spiders that consumed his discarded skin. These spiders then coalesced into a woman named Miss Arrow, or Ero. Ero attempted to implant her spider eggs into Flash Thompson, but Spider-Man intervened and saved him. During her escape, Spider-Man forced Ero to crash into a bird enclosure, where the birds devoured the mass of spiders that formed her body. Only one spider survived, which Spider-Man quickly crushed.

2) Annihilus gets His Insides Torn Out

Annihilus, a ruthless tyrant from the Negative Zone, launched a devastating invasion of our universe with his Annihilation Wave. He systematically destroyed planets and defeated countless heroes, intent on wiping out all life. His campaign reached its peak with the slaughter of the Nova Corps, a galactic peacekeeping force. After a fierce and deadly battle, only one Nova Corps member, Richard Rider, remained. Rider ultimately avenged his fallen friends by defeating Annihilus in brutal fashion, tearing out his internal organs.

1) Ultimate Hulk Eats and Digests Herr Kleiser Alive

Herr Kleiser, a shapeshifting alien and major villain in the Ultimate Universe, suffered a gruesome fate. During a Chitauri invasion, Captain America, pushed to his limit, unleashed the Hulk to stop them. He directed the Hulk towards Kleiser, who was then brutally attacked. In a furious rage, the Hulk not only defeated Kleiser and ripped off his head, but completely devoured his body. S.H.I.E.L.D. believed Kleiser’s shapeshifting powers might have allowed him to survive for a time within the Hulk’s stomach, meaning he ultimately died being digested alive by the Hulk’s incredibly potent stomach acids.
