10 Years Ago, Marvel Revealed The Ultimate Power Of These 6 X-Men

Ten years ago, Marvel Comics published a story where the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy joined forces. During this event, six powerful X-Men discovered the full extent of their abilities thanks to the Black Vortex – an ancient, incredibly powerful mirror created by the Celestials. The Black Vortex shows a hero their ultimate potential, but it’s also a dangerous artifact that has wiped out civilizations. The X-Men and Guardians had to fight against its corrupting influence to prevent galactic destruction.

This details how six X-Men gained enhanced abilities through the Black Vortex, and what those improvements were.

6) Storm

Storm is a legendary leader among the X-Men, and incredibly powerful. As an Omega-level mutant, she has complete control over the weather, with virtually no limits to what she can do with the elements. Beyond that, her status as a goddess further amplifies her abilities. We’ve even seen glimpses of even greater power when she connected with the Black Vortex.

Looking into the Black Vortex, Storm glimpsed a future version of herself with unimaginable power – she saw herself as a goddess, capable of traveling between stars and even destroying planets. But Storm, known for her strong will and self-control, refused this power. She believed it was too dangerous and tried to persuade others to destroy the Black Vortex completely.

5) Beast

Of all the X-Men, Beast was the most vulnerable to the Black Vortex’s influence. In Marvel Comics, no hero experienced a more dramatic downfall. Starting with his reckless use of time travel that displaced the young X-Men and continuing through his later leadership of X-Force and attempt at genocide, Beast has become the most tragically corrupted hero among the X-Men in recent years.

Beast’s intense desire for knowledge and scientific understanding had become more important to him than his principles, making him strongly drawn to the power offered by the Black Vortex. While his teammates argued about destroying it, Beast investigated the Vortex himself, gaining incredible intelligence and the ability to perceive the entire multiverse and the fundamental nature of reality. Remarkably, he eventually recognized his mistake and rejected the Vortex’s influence.

4) Angel

Archangel has experienced significant power shifts throughout his life. After losing his wings with X-Factor, he nearly died in a plane attack but was rescued by Apocalypse. He later accepted becoming a Horseman of Apocalypse, specifically the incarnation of Death, which transformed him into a new version of Archangel. He also encountered another opportunity for change through the Black Vortex.

This wasn’t the original Angel who joined Apocalypse. It was a version of Angel pulled from the past by Beast, left stranded in the present. After being exposed to the Black Vortex, he became incredibly powerful, gaining fiery, cosmic wings. Unlike Beast and Storm, he retained his abilities and began to resemble Archangel. Eventually, Kid Cable arrived and rescued him, stripping away his powers and sending him back to his own time.

3) Cyclops

Cyclops, a member of the X-Men, sometimes makes poor choices due to his desire for power and control. He was one of the few who allowed himself to be influenced by the Black Vortex, but he had a secret reason for doing so. Because of his strong mental connection with Jean Grey, she persuaded him to embrace the experience, believing he would ultimately use his power for good.

Cyclops feared the Black Vortex would awaken a hidden darkness within him, but Jean knew he didn’t possess any such darkness, as Scott believed. He was unique in adapting to the Vortex’s changes without losing control. The transformation mainly gave him stronger optic blasts, and, for the first time, complete mastery over his powers.

2) Iceman

As a huge X-Men fan, I always felt Iceman was a bit underutilized. That’s why the Black Vortex storyline was so fascinating! It finally hinted at his true potential. Seeing him and Groot explore those powers was cool, but what really got me was discovering just how much stronger Iceman could be. We saw an increase in his ice abilities, sure, but it really established him as something more. It’s always been clear he’s capable of far more than we typically see in the comics, and the Black Vortex really confirmed he’s an Omega-level mutant – a powerhouse! It’s exciting to see him finally tap into that full potential, even if it’s only been glimpsed a couple of times.

1) Kitty Pryde

Kitty Pryde is a remarkably powerful X-Man, capable of much more than just phasing. When the Brood threatened Spartax, the X-Men, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, Kitty stepped up and saved everyone. To do so, she tapped into the Black Vortex, unlocking incredible new abilities.

Kitty became incredibly powerful, transcending reality and gaining the ability to connect with all her past selves. Despite this immense power, she remained a true hero, resisting any dark impulses. She used her abilities for good, notably phasing an entire planet to safety and destroying enemy ships with her own hands, solidifying her place as one of the X-Men’s finest.
