Netflix has become a major player in comedy films over the past few years, largely because fewer comedies are being released in theaters. Despite reports to the contrary, theatrical comedies are still around! While many new comedies now premiere as Netflix originals, the company’s first attempt at a comedy film, released ten years ago, was a complete flop – almost everyone who watched it disliked it.
I remember when Netflix released The Ridiculous 6 back in December 2015. It was a big deal because it was their first real attempt at a comedy movie, and everyone was excited about this new partnership with Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison team. We all had high hopes! Sadly, it turned out to be…not good. A lot of fans quickly put it right up there with Jack and Jill as one of Sandler’s least funny films, and it definitely didn’t live up to the hype.
Netflix has added many comedies over the years, and some have been quite successful. However, it’s surprising to realize just how rough their initial attempts at comedy were.
The movie The Ridiculous 6 is widely considered to be very poor, famously earning a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While audiences rated it slightly higher, with a 37% on the Popcornmeter, it still received harsh criticism. Reviewers pointed to lazy attempts at humor and offensive portrayals of characters as major flaws.
Frank Coraci’s The Ridiculous 6 is one of the worst movies Netflix has released in the past ten years (though I’d choose it over Spenser Confidential). The film features Adam Sandler as White Knife, a Western outlaw who was orphaned and raised by Native Americans. He learns he has five half-brothers and recruits them to help him find their estranged father.
The film also stars a fantastic group of actors including Terry Crews, Jorge Garcia, Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson, Will Forte, Steve Zahn, Julia Jones, Harvey Keitel, Nick Nolte, Jon Lovitz, Whitney Cummings, David Spade, and Danny Trejo. Plus, the movie features some surprisingly funny cameos – Blake Shelton appears as Wyatt Earp, and Vanilla Ice plays Mark Twain!
The movie boasts a fantastic cast – as you’d expect from an Adam Sandler film – but unfortunately, none of the actors could really shine due to the weak script.
Okay, so The Ridiculous 6 is still lurking on Netflix if you’re curious, but honestly, I doubt many people are revisiting that one after all these years. Thankfully, Adam Sandler’s deal with Netflix has given us a few genuinely good movies since then, which is a relief!
