It’s sadly common for excellent sci-fi TV shows to be cancelled too soon. Series like Firefly, The OA, and Sense8 were all cut short, despite having dedicated fans. Sci-fi shows often face a challenge: they can be expensive to make, requiring a lot of resources to build convincing and detailed worlds, and they don’t always attract a large enough audience to cover those costs.
The science fiction series The Expanse, created by James S.A. Corey (Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) and developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, premiered on Syfy on December 14, 2015. Set hundreds of years in the future within a colonized solar system, the show quickly gained praise from critics and a dedicated following. Despite its success, Syfy canceled it after three seasons. Luckily, a fan campaign using the hashtag #SaveTheExpanse led Amazon to continue the story, but it was ultimately canceled after season six, leaving the series unfinished as it only covered the first half of the nine-book story written by Corey.
The Expanse Is Brilliant, but it Ended Too Soon

The sixth and final season of The Expanse concluded the storyline involving Marco Inaros and the Free Navy, resulting in a changed Belt and a fragile peace between Earth and Mars. However, fans of the books know this is only the halfway point of the overall story. The novels continue much further into the future, taking humanity on a journey into uncharted territory. The TV series ends right before some major events begin, leaving viewers looking towards the mysterious Laconian Empire and what’s to come.
The show ended mainly because of practical challenges, not because the creators ran out of ideas. They felt it was a good place to stop, as moving the story forward would have required aging the actors. Considering science fiction isn’t always widely popular and the show was costly to produce, the decision made business sense. However, it was still upsetting for viewers. Fans, still reeling from a previous cancellation attempt, expressed their disappointment online, and this final cancellation felt like a definitive end.
Even though it ended sooner than many fans hoped, The Expanse still stands out as one of the best science fiction shows ever made. The writers delivered a satisfying conclusion, and despite still wishing we had more, we’re grateful the show was made in the first place. It’s been ten years, and we’re still disappointed we didn’t get the complete story.
