10 Years Later, Invincible Season 4 Just Brought Back Our Worst Walking Dead Trauma

The fourth episode of Invincible Season 4 has everyone talking! Fans knew the Viltrumite empire was becoming a major danger to Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his family, but the speed and severity of the current events were still shocking – unless you’re familiar with the original comic books.

Episode 5, titled “Give Us a Moment,” features the return of Mark’s father, Nolan/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). He’s back to confront his family after his past betrayal, claiming to have changed and now wanting to protect Earth from the Viltrumite Empire. Nolan asks Mark and his half-brother Oliver (Christian Convery) to join him in a fight against the Viltrumites, and they both hesitantly agree.

(MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW!)

Nolan, Mark, Oliver, Allen the Alien, the armored hero Tech Jacket/Zoe, and their team are traveling back to Talescria when they’re unexpectedly attacked by a Viltrumite ship. The ship is commanded by Conquest, a ruthless Viltrumite warrior Mark almost defeated during a previous fight on Earth.

A fierce battle erupts in space between the Graysons, their friends, and the Viltrumites. Mark ends up fighting Conquest again after Conquest attempts to kill Oliver not once, but twice. Mark’s rage reaches its peak, and he begins brutally choking Conquest across an entire planet. As Conquest starts to lose consciousness, he makes a desperate, horrific move: he shoves his hand through Mark’s stomach and pulls out his intestines. The fight concludes with Mark severely wounded and struggling on the ground, while Conquest appears to die from being strangled.

Invincible Just TV’s Most Butal Moment of the Decade (From the Same Creator)

The second fight between Invincible and Conquest is getting a lot of attention online, mainly because it’s incredibly violent and graphic – many viewers say it’s the most intense animated battle they’ve ever watched. But beyond the action, fans are also surprised by the voice acting during the fight.

Steven Yeun provides the voice for Invincible (Mark Grayson), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan voices Conquest. Many fans were excited by this casting choice because Yeun and Morgan previously worked together on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Notably, both actors were central to a particularly shocking and memorable scene in that show, which, like Invincible, was created by Robert Kirkman.

Back in October 2016, the premiere of The Walking Dead‘s seventh season, titled “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,” was a huge television event. The previous season ended with a cliffhanger, hinting that a major character would die at the hands of Negan, the powerful leader of a group called the Saviors. The premiere shocked viewers—and even the actors—by killing off not one, but two characters. The most devastating death was that of Glenn, played by Steven Yeun, who was a beloved fan favorite and considered the emotional center of the group. In a particularly violent scene, Negan repeatedly struck Glenn in the head with his baseball bat, Lucille, causing horrific injuries as Glenn desperately tried to say goodbye to Maggie (Lauren Cohan).

Glenn’s death was shockingly violent, both to see and hear, and it deeply affected a whole generation of television viewers. Now, ten years later, the creators are deliberately bringing back those painful feelings, even though many viewers are still haunted by it. The upcoming week will likely be filled with worry, as people fear reliving the trauma of Glenn’s death all over again.

You can now watch Season 4 of Invincible on Amazon Prime Video, and The Walking Dead is available on Netflix. Join the discussion about Mark versus Conquest Round 2 on the ComicBook Forum!
