10 Years Later, This is Still the Most Underrated Episode of Rick and Morty

Throughout its seven seasons, the animated show “Rick and Morty” has consistently offered some of the most captivating, side-splitting episodes among all animated series. The story follows Rick, a grumpy inventor who boasts of being the smartest person in the universe, and his earnest yet curious grandson Morty. This series rapidly gained popularity on Adult Swim.

Over 81 captivating episodes, “Rick and Morty” has skillfully reimagined renowned films and shows like “Mad Max,” “The Purge,” “The Terminator,” and “Akira,” along with numerous others, all while showcasing its own bursting originality. With such a wealth of episodes at our fingertips for streaming, it’s easy to miss some of the series’ hidden treasures. Notably, the Season 2 finale of “Rick and Morty” has garnered less attention than it deserves with the passage of time.

“The Wedding Squanchers” is the Most Underrated Rick and Morty Episode

In the closing episode of Season 2, titled ‘The Wedding Squanchers’, we find Rick, Morty, Beth, Summer, and Jerry savoring their breakfast. Suddenly, an unusual delivery service, known as Courier Flap, arrives at their doorstep, extending an invitation to the upcoming wedding of Rick’s longtime buddy, Birdperson, with Tammy, a past student of Summer Smith’s school.

Despite the fact that Beth and Summer are thrilled about the idea of traveling to Planet Squanch for the wedding, Rick seems uninterested and even calls weddings “funerals with cakes,” before turning down the invitation. However, when Jerry inadvertently orders a spacecraft called the “Courier Flap” that transports him 6,000 light-years to Planet Squanch, Rick begrudgingly agrees to take the family on a trip to attend the wedding and bring Jerry back.

Upon our arrival, I’m greeted by Squanchy himself. The rest of the family, except for Rick who charges off towards an open bar, starts engaging with the other guests. Jerry, unfortunately, stumbles in his interactions with Tammy’s parents. Summer and Tammy seem to reconnect, their enthusiasm for the wedding becoming palpable. Meanwhile, Morty makes his way around after advising Rick to loosen up a bit.

The story takes an interesting turn as a drunk Birdperson starts divulging about his history with Rick, unveiling details of their past drenched with the bloodshed of allies and adversaries alike. It turns out they have a long list of crimes, done supposedly for freedom, that now puts them on the radar of the galactic administration, compelling them to live clandestine lives.

“The Wedding Squanchers” Has One of Rick and Morty’s Most Shocking Reveals

At the reception, Rick raises a glass to toast Birdperson and his newlywed spouse, expressing that while he’s not particularly fond of weddings, he sincerely hopes their union brings them great happiness.

After raising her glass, Tammy unexpectedly spoke up. Instead of admitting her feelings for Birdperson as many had anticipated, she shocked everyone by announcing that she was not the young bride people assumed she was. In fact, she was a covert agent working for the galactic government. With a cold and calculated move, she then took Birdperson’s life. Turning to the other criminals present, she informed them that their hideout was encircled and they were now under arrest.

Overwhelmed by Birdperson’s sudden demise, a confrontation between Tammy, her secret agents, and Rick alongside a group of crooks breaks out. Remarkably, Rick, Beth, Summer, Morty, and Jerry successfully evade the chaos without injury. However, their joy is brief as Rick reveals they are permanently barred from returning to Earth.

Through their connection with Rick, the family would now find themselves under threat from the galactic authorities, who are determined to hunt down Earth in order to capture the renegade inventor.

The Wedding Squanchers Features One of Rick’s Few Selfless Acts

Due to circumstances preventing their return to Earth, Rick and the Smith family establish a settlement on a distant planet that lies beyond the reach of the galactic government’s authority. Unfortunately, this planet is considerably smaller than Earth with limited resources. On their first day there, the family inadvertently wiped out an entire species for breakfast, revealing the harsh and unforgiving nature of their new home.

Jerry, unhappy about their recent change in lifestyle, proposes that the family report Rick to the authorities of the galactic government so they can return to living on Earth again. Despite finding this idea abhorrent, the family, the family vehemently opposes the idea. However, unbeknownst to them, Rick listens in and decides to surrender himself for their well-being instead.

Rick informs Morty that he’s heading out for a brief jog to fetch some ice cream. Immediately afterwards, he makes an anonymous call to a crime hotline, sharing information about his location.

In the Season 2 finale, this action resulted in his quick capture, but fortunately, his family was saved and sent back to Earth. One of the rare altruistic deeds in the entire series is the self-sacrifice he made at that time, given the scientist’s generally pessimistic nature.

Furthermore, his apprehension serves as a direct prelude to the Season 3 opener titled “The Rickshank Redemption“, which ranks second in popularity among all Rick and Morty episodes on IMDb. This episode initiates a conflict between the Citadel of Ricks and the Galactic Federation, making “The Wedding Squanchers” one of the pivotal episodes within the series.
