The PS5 Pro will cost $899.99 when it launches next week, bringing us closer than ever to $1000 consoles – a price many once believed would never happen.
Although a high-end setup isn’t required to have fun with the PS5, the standard model now costs $599.99, which is $200 more than when it first came out.
So what does this all mean for the PS6, rumoured to release in 2027?
Industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto suggests the next generation of gaming consoles could potentially cost around $1,000.
Industry analyst Joost van Dreunen predicts that game consoles will soon cost around $1,000, making console gaming a luxury for many.
He told GamesRadar:
The company is hesitant to increase hardware prices because they typically sell consoles at a loss, relying on game sales to make a profit. I believe the next generation of consoles will cost about 50% more than the current ones did at launch.
I was reading what Circana analyst Mat Piscatella had to say, and he admitted that we could potentially see consoles hitting the $1,000 mark. He really hopes that doesn’t happen, but he thinks it’s definitely within the realm of possibility.
Everything we’ve heard indicates Sony is trying to make the PS6 cheaper to produce, but current economic conditions could make that difficult.
Launching a new gaming console right now seems risky, considering the ongoing wars, the difficulty of getting computer parts due to AI demand, and the current high inflation.
Some people are wondering if Sony will postpone the release of its next gaming console. However, even if they do, it’s uncertain whether production costs will decrease in the next few years. Plus, Sony has probably already signed deals with suppliers that would be expensive to break.
New PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino faces some tough choices, as he’s stepping into the role during a particularly challenging period for the company.
