As a film critic, when I think about great movie trilogies, the usual suspects always come up – Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series. Those are classic examples of stories told across three films, following the same characters and a single, big plot. But trilogies don’t have to be that way. Sometimes, a trilogy is more like a collection of films that aren’t directly connected story-wise, but still feel like they come from the same creative mind or explore similar ideas – Edgar Wright’s “Cornetto Trilogy” is a perfect example. Those are the kinds of trilogies I really enjoy dissecting, because it’s fascinating to find the common threads. And recently, sci-fi fans had a great one to talk about in that vein.
Neill Blomkamp’s science fiction film, Chappie, was released in theaters on March 6, 2015. The movie centers around Chappie, a robot voiced by Sharlto Copley. While Chappie tells its own complete story, some fans consider it the conclusion to an informal trilogy of sci-fi films Blomkamp directed. These films include District 9 and Elysium. The trilogy started strongly, but unfortunately, each subsequent film performed less well than the last.
District 9 Is the Best Movie of Neill Blomkamp’s Unofficial Sci-Fi Trilogy

Although District 9, Elysium, and Chappie don’t share a story or even a common universe—unlike Duncan Jones’ Moon and Mute—viewers often see them as a connected trilogy. This is because the films have a lot in common. They all feature similar settings and delve into related social and political issues, like class, racism, and immigration. In many ways, the three movies work well together, each offering a unique angle on important humanitarian concerns. They aim to be thought-provoking science fiction, using imaginative concepts—such as an alien spacecraft over Johannesburg or a robot’s journey to understand life—to reflect our own world.
Neill Blomkamp quickly established himself as a talented director with the release of District 9, a film many still consider his best work after 17 years. The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning over $210 million globally on a $30 million budget and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Praised for its impressive visuals, thoughtful story, and strong performances—particularly from Sharlto Copley—District 9 stood out because it functioned both as a powerful allegory for apartheid and as a thrilling, high-stakes science fiction adventure. Many consider it the best sci-fi film of 2009, a year that also gave us Star Trek and Avatar.
While District 9 is considered a groundbreaking film, it created enormous expectations for director Neill Blomkamp that his later movies haven’t quite met. Elysium, though not terrible (receiving a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), suffered from heavy-handed themes and a predictable story – something Blomkamp himself later acknowledged. Things worsened with 2015’s Chappie, which performed the worst critically and commercially of his three films. Despite having a promising concept, Chappie struggled to deliver, highlighting that Blomkamp, while inventive, sometimes has difficulty bringing his ideas to life on screen.
With Chappie, director Neill Blomkamp seemed to move away from the kind of filmmaking that first brought him attention. His subsequent films, Demonic and Gran Turismo, arrived years later and were quite different from the thought-provoking science fiction of his earlier work. It’s a shame he couldn’t capitalize on the success of District 9 and become a leading genre filmmaker. District 9 felt original and exciting, but his later films felt like forced attempts to repeat that success, and ultimately didn’t connect with audiences. Despite this, Blomkamp still demonstrates strong visual talent and filmmaking passion, suggesting he may return to the quality of his early work in the future.
