11 Years Ago Today, This Cancelled Adult Swim Show Ended (And Fans Want It Back)

Today marks the 11th anniversary of the end of a beloved, but underrated, animated series on Adult Swim. Fans are still eager for a revival, even years after it was cancelled. Adult Swim originally brought a fresh and experimental approach to Cartoon Network, and it’s helped many adult animated shows thrive. Unfortunately, some of these popular shows, including this one, were cut short despite a dedicated fanbase.

Black Dynamite was a brilliant concept – it playfully exaggerated the already over-the-top Blaxploitation films of the 1970s, bringing that style to a new audience. The show really took off with its animated series on Adult Swim, which ran for two seasons. The final episode aired 11 years ago today, on January 10, 2025, and despite strong fan support, the series was unfortunately cancelled soon after.

What Is Black Dynamite?

I first discovered Black Dynamite back when the live-action movie came out in 2009, and it instantly became a favorite! Michael Jai White is incredible as the title character – he even helped write the script with Scott Sanders and Byron Minns. The story follows Black Dynamite, an ex-government agent, as he seeks revenge for his brother’s death. It’s a wild ride through a crazy criminal underworld, where he uncovers a huge drug operation and a government conspiracy. Seriously, it’s all up to him to save the day! The movie was already a big hit, but I was so excited when they expanded the world with an animated series!

Created by Carl Jones, known for his work with Adult Swim on shows like The Boondocks and The Jellies, the Black Dynamite animated series was initially revealed when the live-action movie came out on home video. A short pilot episode quickly followed, giving fans a preview of what the animated show would be like. The full series then premiered on July 15, 2012, featuring the original actors providing voices for the animated version.

I remember watching the animated series of Black Dynamite and being really pleased that Michael Jai White reprised his role as the hero. It felt like a continuation of the original film, taking place in the same 1970s setting. What was especially great was seeing so many of the original cast return – Byron Minns as Bullhorn, Tommy Davidson as Cream Corn, Kim Whitley as Honeybee, and Cedric Yarbrough as Chocolate Giddy-Up, to name a few. It really felt like a proper spin-off and a nod to the fans. Sadly, after two seasons, the show ended on January 10, 2015, and we later found out it wasn’t coming back.

What Happened to Black Dynamite?

The season concluded with a spectacular hour-long musical episode, which initially felt like a fitting series finale and worried many Adult Swim viewers. Those fears were confirmed a few weeks later when the show’s creator, Carl Jones, announced on social media that the series had been cancelled. While various explanations for the cancellation have surfaced, Jones has never publicly shared the reason.

Adult Swim typically gives its animated shows a good amount of time to find an audience, even if they’re unconventional. However, many fans believe the show Black Dynamite was cancelled too soon after only two seasons. With the recent cancellation of The Boondocks reboot and other shows in development, now might be the perfect time to revisit Black Dynamite with a new installment.

I’m still baffled by the cancellation of Black Dynamite! Honestly, it could have been anything – maybe it was just too costly to make, or there were issues with the rights to the show, or even creative differences. Whatever the reason, so many of us are really hoping it comes back! We’ve seen Adult Swim bring back other shows after they’ve ended, so a revival doesn’t seem totally out of the question, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
