11 Years Later, An Underrated Dark Sci-Fi Just Dethroned Netflix’s Biggest Movie After 1 Day

The animated movie *KPop Demon Hunters* quickly became a huge hit for Netflix after its release in June. The musical adventure, about a demon-hunting group called Huntr/x, has stayed at the top of the streaming charts for weeks, becoming a cultural sensation. It even inspired a sketch on *Saturday Night Live*, and its song, “Golden,” reached number one on both the Billboard Global 200 and the US Billboard Hot 100. However, *KPop Demon Hunters* has now been overtaken by an older, 11-year-old sci-fi film that was just added to Netflix.

Released in 2014, *The Maze Runner* kicked off a popular film series, followed by *Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials* and *Maze Runner: The Death Cure*. Based on James Dashner’s books, the movie stars Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, a teenager who finds himself in a mysterious maze with no memory of who he is. Along with other boys known as the Gladers, Thomas works to escape, quickly realizing the maze is dangerous and part of something much larger. Directed by Wes Ball, *The Maze Runner* was a huge hit around the world and remains a highly-regarded young adult science fiction film.

The Maze Runner Isn’t Alone in Climbing Netflix’s Top 10

The movie *The Maze Runner* has moved into second place on Netflix, bumping *Kpop Demon Hunters* down to third. What’s even more impressive is that the other two *Maze Runner* films are also popular right now. *Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials* is currently fifth, and *Maze Runner: The Death Cure* is eighth – and they were only added to Netflix yesterday! This shows that *The Maze Runner* remains a beloved series, which is great news with a reboot film in the works.

Disney first hinted at more *Maze Runner* movies back in 2019 at CinemaCon, and in May 2024, news broke that a reboot was being planned, with Wes Ball returning as a producer. This new film isn’t a simple sequel or remake of the original *The Maze Runner*; it’s intended to continue the story in a new direction. What exactly that means remains unclear, especially since Dylan O’Brien has stated he hasn’t been approached about participating. Details are currently scarce, but with the series gaining popularity again on Netflix, there’s hope that development will move forward quickly.

The Maze Runner trilogy is now streaming on Netflix.
