12 Years Ago, This Free Anime Amassed 8 Million Views & It’s The Worst Thing You’ll Ever Love

YouTube is full of impressive indie animations like *Hazbin Hotel*, *Ena*, and *The Amazing Digital Circus*. However, sometimes the really rough, low-budget creations are worth watching too – especially when they’re so bad they’re funny. One such fan-made animation looks like it was made by a kid using basic software like MS Paint and Windows Movie Maker.

Fifteen years ago, Yoli-chan (SoapOpera46) created a famously chaotic YouTube series called *Nyan~ Neko Sugar Girls*. Honestly, it wasn’t good even when it was new, so it definitely hasn’t improved with age. It’s a cringeworthy look back at a period of anime that many older fans would rather forget. While some miss the days before anime became so popular, it’s probably best we’ve moved past things like *this*.

This Anime Is So Horrible, Fans Can’t Help Loving It

The show centers around three close friends – Koneko, who is calm and rational; Raku, who is sweet and innocent; and Hitoshi, who is attractive and flirtatious. They face challenges involving betrayal, loss, and heartbreak. As their bond deepens, it’s threatened by a handsome, enigmatic man who pursues Hitoshi, and Hitoshi finds it difficult to resist his advances. At the same time, Raku struggles to hide her growing feelings for Hitoshi.

Koneko is devastated as a love triangle threatens her friendship, and she discovers a determined side of Raku she’s never seen before – a side he’ll have to confront or risk losing her completely. She finds an ally in a powerful shrine maiden who also works as a dedicated doctor, but even their combined strength might not be enough, as Hitoshi longs for the way things used to be. Ultimately, the story is best experienced by watching it unfold.

This fan-made anime, known for its dedicated fanbase and creative works like fanart and cosplay, continues to be surprisingly popular. Its first episode alone has over 3 million views, making it the most successful project of its kind so far. Created between April 2010 and December 2012, the series, called SoapOpera46, released 11 episodes, including a special Christmas episode and a half-episode. The show is known for its deliberately poor animation, comical voice acting, and exaggerated anime clichés – think cat girls, over-the-top character designs, and random, emphasized Japanese phrases.

The anime features the opening song “TRUE LOVE” by jun ft. Schanita, and the ending is an original, untitled track by Yoli-chan. Episode 10 uses Whitesnake’s “Is This Love” as the opening and a cover of Wham!’s “Last Christmas” sung by Koneko-chan as the ending. Yoli-chan created the series, handles the animation, and likely does some voice acting (probably for Raku-chan), but the full voice cast remains a mystery. Despite presenting a deliberately low-quality aesthetic, Yoli-chan might be a more skilled animator and illustrator than they appear… or maybe not. It’s something we may never find out.

On April 9, 2023, Yoli-chan (Nyanyandesu) announced on DeviantArt that fans are welcome to use the show however they want, without needing permission. Thank you, Yoli-chan! This means fans can share Nyan~ Neko Sugar Girls through presentations, with friends, online, or at anime clubs, and hopefully help new and existing fans continue to support the SoapOpera46 channel.
