12 Years Ago, Zack Snyder Delivered the Most Controversial Scene in Comic Book Movie History

James Gunn’s version of “Superman” seems promising as a remarkable superhero film. The cast shines, the music promises quality, and the promotional materials emphasize that the main character is dedicated to saving people regardless of their allegiance. This film appears to have a distinct feel compared to Superman’s previous appearances in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). In contrast to Zack Snyder’s unique take, which explored whether the contemporary world required a hero like Superman and how this debate impacted the character, the DCEU initially focused on this theme, which was evident early in its first film, “Man of Steel.” Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the storyline to lose its footing.

In the film Man of Steel, Clark Kent, who’s also known as Superman, frequently clashes with his father, Jonathan Kent. Unlike Clark, who yearns to use his powers for good, Jonathan believes the world isn’t prepared for a figure like his son and seeks to protect him. Their ideological conflict reaches its peak in an emotionally charged scene within Man of Steel, a moment that remains one of the most debated scenes in comic book movie lore.

Man of Steel‘s Jonathan Kent Takes the Term “Overprotective Parent” to Another Level

Immediately upon discovering the Kryptonian spaceship in Kansas’ fields, Jonathan and his wife Martha, who now consider the child found inside as their own, remain vigilant, aware of the potential government interest in their son. However, over the years, their initial apprehension fades as Clark grows up and attends school, giving them hope that he might lead a typical life. Yet, his powers and moral compass – which compels him to intervene whenever someone is endangered – create difficulties, adding complexity to an otherwise ordinary existence.

As a movie buff, I’d rephrase that scene like this: When my school bus plunges into a river following an accident on a bridge, I leap into action without a second thought, pulling the vehicle to safety. One of my classmates witnesses this act of bravery and shares it with our parents. While Dad tries to downplay the incident, I can sense the tension building around us. Fast-forward to another heated exchange between us, and a tornado strikes a highway we’re driving on. In the midst of chaos, I work alongside my father to get people to safety. But our pet is trapped inside the car. Without hesitation, Dad rushes back to save our furry friend as the tornado approaches. As I prepare to rescue my dad from the oncoming storm, he holds me back, fearing that society may not accept what I’m truly capable of.

Clark can only stand by, as his father vanishes into the whirlpool, a situation that’s hard to accept. It’s unusual for Superman, who usually acts quickly when someone needs help, especially when it comes to his own father. However, at this point in the movie “Man of Steel”, Clark isn’t yet the Superman we know from the comics and he’s still figuring out where he belongs in the world.

Man of Steel Is More Than Just Its Most Controversial Moment

Following my father’s passing, I embark on a global journey in pursuit of understanding my origins and the characteristics of my kin. Intrigued by the mysteries surrounding me, I seek answers that will help illuminate my past. During this quest, I uncover the truth about my heritage upon encountering a Kryptonian vessel, where I meet my biological father, Jor-El. He enlightens me with the revelation that I am destined to be a savior on Earth. With this knowledge, I step forward confidently, donning my iconic red and white attire, prepared to tackle whatever life presents. Yet, I soon find myself in over my head when I encounter General Zod, who tests the limits of my newfound heroism.

As a devoted cinephile, reflecting on Man of Steel, I find myself drawn to the climactic moment when Superman confronts Zod. In this critical juncture, Zod is cornered and ready to meet his end, but he’s determined to take others down with him. The situation presents me with a difficult dilemma: adhere to my moral principles and let Zod live or act selflessly and save the innocent family. With my two fathers’ teachings echoing in my mind, I choose the tougher path that will forever weigh on my conscience. It’s not a message of unbridled optimism as in Gunn’s Superman, but it offers a far more nuanced perspective than often acknowledged.

Man of Steel is streaming on HBO Max.
