The anime industry has experienced huge growth recently, releasing many new shows each year for fans worldwide. It’s incredibly frustrating when a captivating anime ends without a proper conclusion, leaving viewers hanging and then never receiving another season – sometimes for years or even over a decade. These series often feature creative stories and memorable characters that deserve to be continued. While fans may turn to the original source material, like manga or light novels, to find out what happens next, it doesn’t quite capture the same experience as watching the animated version. No Game No Life is a prime example – it was popular when it aired in 2014 and has maintained a large fanbase, but despite releasing a prequel in 2017, a second season has never been announced.
I’ve been watching the anime world explode in popularity lately, and it feels like it’s become a major part of mainstream entertainment. Crunchyroll is definitely the biggest name for streaming anime, constantly adding tons of new shows each season. But it’s interesting to see other platforms like Hulu and HIDIVE getting in on the action too. They’re bringing over a lot of older anime – some are a few years old, and others are genuine classics that people have maybe forgotten about. It’s a shame, because these older shows really demonstrate how diverse and artistic anime can be, but they often get lost in the shuffle due to a lack of promotion and aren’t as well-known as newer titles.
HIDIVE, the anime streaming service, updates its list of available shows each month, announcing what’s being added and taken away. The May 2026 lineup has been announced, and unfortunately, some popular titles are leaving, including the highly-regarded isekai anime No Game No Life. First released in 2014, No Game No Life never received a second season despite being critically acclaimed and loved by fans. While a prequel film came out in 2017, most fans have lost hope for a continuation. The series will no longer be available on HIDIVE after May 9th, 2026, but you can still watch it on Prime Video. It isn’t currently available on Crunchyroll or Netflix, however.
What Is No Game No Life About?
This story comes from an ongoing series of books by Yuu Kamiya. An animated adaptation by Madhouse increased its popularity, and fans have eagerly anticipated a continuation ever since. The story takes place in a virtual world called Disboard, ruled by Tet, a supremely powerful god. Disboard is home to sixteen different intelligent races, and humans – known as Imanity – are considered the weakest, lacking any magical abilities.
Things start to look up for humanity when Sora and Shino, a brother and sister duo, find themselves transported to a new world. Back on Earth, they were an unbeatable team in online gaming. Now, in this new world called Disboard, they discover Elkia, the last kingdom of a race called Imanity, and meet Stephanie Dola, a girl determined to rule it.
When the stepsiblings discover more about Stephanie, they resolve to help her fix things in Elkia and become its new leaders. The story was also adapted into a manga in 2013, released in two volumes. While the anime studio Madhouse hasn’t announced a second season, despite having plenty of source material remaining, the first season only covers a small portion of the much more detailed light novel.
