13 Years Ago, A Rare Tom Cruise Miss Brought The Decade’s Best Action Hero To Screen For The First Time

I remember when Tom Cruise first stepped into the role of Jack Reacher back in 2012, based on the books by Lee and Andrew Child! The stories follow this former Military Police major who just wanders around the US, taking on random jobs. He usually drifts into some small town and ends up helping people, solving mysteries, and generally being a total badass before moving on. The books really nail it – Reacher isn’t looking for trouble, but trouble always seems to find him.

It has to be Jack Reacher, the character Tom Cruise first portrayed on screen over ten years ago. The movie, also called Jack Reacher, follows the story of this mysterious former Army investigator as he helps solve a multiple murder case. The police have already arrested a suspect – a former military sniper who Reacher initially believes is guilty. However, as the investigation progresses, new evidence emerges, turning everything upside down and suggesting someone else committed the crime. The film boasts a strong cast, including Werner Herzog and Rosamund Pike. Jack Reacher received a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences seemed to enjoy it a bit more, giving it a 67% score on the site’s Popcornmeter.

Tom Cruise Started A Legacy With His Portrayal Of Jack Reacher

It’s still amusing to see Tom Cruise, who is much shorter than the character, play the 6’5″ Jack Reacher. However, the movie actually holds up well and seems to have set the stage for the successful Prime Video series. Jennifer Heaton of Alternative Lens notes the film has a classic 1970s vibe, similar to movies like Bullitt and The French Connection. Now, Alan Ritchson is portraying Reacher, delivering a performance on TV that’s quite different from Cruise’s take on the character from over a decade ago.

The latest version of the Reacher series is even better than the original, earning an impressive 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes across its three seasons, with a fourth season already planned. The first season alone received a 92% score, and critic Adrian Ruiz from But Why Tho? described it as a fantastic blend of Sherlock Holmes and an 80s action film, praising Jack Reacher’s combination of physical strength and detective skills.
