Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Wonder Man episode 8.
As a big movie fan, I’ve been following the MCU for years, and honestly, things haven’t been as strong lately with this whole Multiverse Saga. It’s a shame, because for a long time, Marvel was unstoppable, just churning out one massive blockbuster after another. But I’ve noticed a lot of people, myself included, aren’t connecting with the newer films the way we used to. It’s funny though, because a movie like Iron Man 3? That one actually seems to be gaining even more appreciation over time. It really holds up!
Despite not being massive box office hits, some recent Marvel projects are doing really well with audiences and are cleverly building connections throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A great example of this is the new Wonder Man series, which includes a link all the way back to the events of Iron Man 3 from 2013.
Iron Man 3 Was Reasonably Well Received As Far As The MCU Goes
When the Marvel Cinematic Universe first started, it took a while to prove to viewers that Marvel Studios could reliably make great movies. However, after the huge success of The Avengers in 2012, expectations were very high for Iron Man 3 the next year.
While reviews for Iron Man 3 were mixed, it was a huge financial success, earning $1.2 billion worldwide. This continued to build momentum for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and paved the way for future hit movies.
Trevor Slattery Became A Standout Supporting Character After Iron Man 3
When the film first came out, many viewers were disappointed by how the character of the Mandarin was presented. The movie had hinted at the powerful Ten Rings organization and the Mandarin’s eventual appearance ever since the first Iron Man in 2008, building up a lot of anticipation. However, revealing him to be a washed-up, inebriated actor named Trevor Slattery felt silly and fell flat.
Fortunately, after nearly ten years, Marvel’s release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings successfully reimagined the shadowy Ten Rings organization. The film also brought back Ben Kingsley to play the hilariously misguided Trevor, a role that ultimately revitalized the character and made him a fan favorite within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Wonder Man Finale Sees Trevor Slattery Embrace The Mandarin
Wonder Man takes Trevor Slattery’s story to a new level, making it one of the most compelling character journeys in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After hitting rock bottom and having his life turned upside down, Trevor courageously decides to return to Hollywood and try to rebuild. This painful chapter had haunted him for over ten years.
By the end of Wonder Man, Trevor comes to terms with his past and steps back into the role of the Mandarin, but this time to help his friend, Simon Williams. This touching scene lets Trevor take ownership of his troubled history and use it for good, while also realizing he doesn’t need to be the center of attention anymore.
