Jason Statham is a leading action star known for his roles in popular franchises like The Expendables and Fast & Furious. He’s also shown he can carry an action movie on his own, as seen with the success of The Meg, which earned over $500 million and led to a sequel. His films with director David Ayer, like The Beekeeper and A Working Man, also did well, proving there’s still a demand for moderately budgeted action movies. While not every film has been a hit – Homefront from 2013 received mixed reviews and didn’t perform strongly initially – it’s now gaining the recognition it deserves.
Between February 2nd and 8th, the movie Homefront ranked as the eighth most popular title on Netflix. It outperformed two Netflix originals, The Rip and Kpop Demon Hunters, to reach that position. This was the first week Homefront appeared in Netflix’s top 10.
Why Homefront Is A Hit on Netflix 13 Years Later

Netflix added the action film Homefront at just the right time this month. Jason Statham’s more recent movie, Shelter, came out on January 30th. Although Shelter didn’t become a blockbuster ($30.1 million worldwide so far), it did well with fans of the action genre. Statham has a dedicated following, and people who saw Shelter in theaters might have been looking for his other films to watch. Homefront was a convenient choice because it was already available on Netflix.
Okay, so when Homefront first came out, it got a pretty mixed reaction – around 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, if you look it up. A lot of critics said it didn’t really do anything new with the action genre. But honestly, that’s part of what I like about it! It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It’s a straight-up, old-school action flick about a guy, Phil Broker – Jason Statham, naturally – who accidentally gets tangled up with a small-time meth dealer, Gator Bodine, played by James Franco. The cast is fantastic, too – you’ve got Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth, Frank Grillo, and Clancy Brown all in there. It really feels like those classic, gritty thrillers from back in the day, and it leans into that vibe hard.
The heart of the story in Homefront lies in its emotional core. We see a single father, Broker, trying to build a quiet life with his young daughter in a remote town. This family dynamic immediately draws the audience in, making us care about Broker and Maddy’s relationship. While this isn’t a groundbreaking approach – it’s a common way to connect viewers to a story – it works well and heightens the tension as they face danger. The unsettling performance of the villain, played by Franco, further adds to the suspense.
While Homefront probably won’t be considered one of the greatest action films of recent years, it’s still a good movie starring Jason Statham and worth checking out, particularly for his fans. He really captures the spirit of classic action heroes, and it’s always fun to watch him play a straightforward, tough guy who defeats the villains.
