For almost twenty years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has created the most financially successful movie series ever, earning over $30 billion globally and attracting a huge, talented cast. Stars like Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, and Tom Holland were already gaining recognition in Hollywood, but the MCU launched them into global stardom, with each headlining multiple blockbuster films. At the same time, experienced actors like Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett brought their decades of skill to the franchise, adding both gravitas and excitement to their roles. The MCU’s casting was so effective that some actors, like Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, became strongly identified with their Marvel characters, completely reshaping their careers. Interestingly, looking back, some actors’ previous work hinted at the roles they would later play in the MCU.
The HBO comedy series Veep, created by Armando Iannucci, first aired on April 22, 2012. It was based on his earlier British show, The Thick of It, but set in American politics. Over seven seasons and 65 episodes, the show followed Selina Meyer (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) as she went from U.S. Senator to Vice President and, briefly, President. Veep cleverly revealed that gaining political power doesn’t necessarily mean gaining real influence. The show’s realistic style helped Julia Louis-Dreyfus win an unprecedented six consecutive Emmy Awards for her leading role. Nine years later, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, demonstrating the breadth of her acting talent with two very different political characters.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Work in Veep Teased Valentina’s Political Machinations in the MCU

Selina Meyer and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine both operate within the world of US politics, but they are very different characters. Selina is driven and sometimes capable, but constantly sabotaged by her team, Washington insiders, and the frustrating nature of the American government. This makes Veep a satire where power is fragile and easily lost due to simple mistakes, and those in charge are always the butt of the joke. Julia Louis-Dreyfus brilliantly portrayed Selina as confident, while simultaneously revealing that confidence was often a facade. Selina’s political success was built on appearances rather than genuine strength. Viewers followed Selina in Veep because the system around her was designed to destroy people, yet she consistently survived by being adaptable and willing to sacrifice her principles.
Valentina doesn’t just navigate the system – she controls it. We first saw this in 2021’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where she offered John Walker a new role as U.S. Agent after he lost public favor, demanding his loyalty in return. Later that year, in a post-credits scene for Black Widow, she manipulated Yelena Belova’s grief over Natasha Romanoff’s death by giving her false information about who was responsible. By the time Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrived, Valentina had become the Director of the CIA, and she didn’t hesitate to arrest her ex-husband, Everett Ross, for treason when he shared sensitive information with Wakanda.

In Thunderbolts, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine fully put her long-planned scheme into action. As the head of the CIA, she sent her team on a mission to cover up her secret involvement with the Sentry Project – a hidden program where they experimented on people, creating Bob Reynolds (played by Lewis Pullman). Over years, she’d carefully chosen each team member, taking advantage of their weaknesses and seeing them as expendable. Facing possible removal from office, Valentina tried to use Bob to improve her public image, but his unstable mental state made him too dangerous. The film portrays Valentina as a villain who uses her power within the government and shows no remorse.
Valentina shares a similar path to Selina Meyer from Veep, but without any moral limits. Selina spent seven seasons learning exactly how American politics works – understanding its strengths and weaknesses. Valentina gained the same knowledge but is willing to use any means necessary to achieve her objectives. Over four appearances in the MCU, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has crafted a carefully designed villain, and looking back, her role in Veep feels like preparation – a deep understanding of how power and institutions operate from within.
Thunderbolts* is currently streaming on Disney+.
