With so many fighting games released in the last twenty years, it’s easy to pick out the ones that really stuck around. Some games from the 90s arcades are still popular with dedicated players today. But one game, in particular, is a great example of a modern fighting game with lasting appeal – it’s even been updated with new content almost twelve years after it first came out.
It’s no surprise some fighting game fans prefer older titles these days. Newer games often launch with disappointing updates and rely heavily on ongoing, live service models. Games like Killer Instinct (2013) and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 might not be as popular as Street Fighter 6 or Mortal Kombat 1, but they tend to have incredibly dedicated communities. When you add the initial excitement players felt with continued content updates years later, you can build a thriving community that avoids many of the problems common in fighting games.
Skullgirls Has Been Receiving Substantial Updates & New Characters As Recently As 2024

Even though Skullgirls 2nd Encore first came out in 2012, it’s still being updated, with the recent release of its Season 1 Pass adding four new playable characters. Skullgirls is a fighting game known for its beautiful, hand-drawn 2D animation, blending a cartoon style with a noir look to create distinct and lively characters. Its gameplay is also unique, offering a different approach to fighting game mechanics and team building, and it’s continued to evolve since its first downloadable content was released.
Dedicated fighting game players often highlight Skullgirls for its diverse character roster. Each fighter has a distinctly different playstyle, making no two characters alike. They all feature unique combos, special moves, and team-up options. Players can choose to control a single powerful character, a pair of coordinated fighters, or a full team of three, adding a lot of strategic depth to the gameplay.
I’m still discovering cool new things in Skullgirls, especially with all the recent updates and the characters they’ve added. One of the best parts is figuring out crazy team combos – it’s honestly inspiring to see how games like Invincible Vs., 2XKO, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls are building on similar ideas this year. Plus, the online play is so smooth thanks to the refined rollback netcode, which makes it awesome to practice and improve with other players.
Internal Changes Throughout This Fighting Game’s Life Cycle Have Kept It Alive

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the fighting game Skullgirls remained popular thanks to its strong online features, which were cutting-edge for the genre at the time. However, the game’s biggest growth came from changes within the development team, enabling the creation of downloadable content long after its initial release. Originally developed by Reverge Labs, Skullgirls 2nd Encore drew heavy inspiration from Capcom’s Darkstalkers series and was eventually published with distribution support from Konami.
In 2012, the developers of Skullgirls were laid off when their parent company, Autumn Games, faced lawsuits over a different game, Def Jam Rapstar. The Skullgirls team didn’t give up, though. They formed a new company called Lab Zero Games and kept working on the game, creating downloadable content like new character colors and voice packs. Skullgirls gained some attention through tournaments and community events, but its popularity began to decline until 2020.
Lab Zero Games went through further changes when its lead designer, Mike Zaimont, resigned after facing accusations of misconduct. As a result, Autumn Games and Hidden Variable Studios ended their partnership with Lab Zero Games, but continued to collaborate with the original developers. After Zaimont dismissed the remaining Lab Zero Games staff, those developers later formed a new independent studio called Future Club. Future Club continues to develop new content for Skullgirls in collaboration with Autumn Games.
Fast-Paced Tag Team Battles & Impressive Hand Drawn Visuals Have Created An Extremely Loyal Audience

Despite changes in development, Skullgirls continues to be a high-quality game, thanks to the dedication of the original creators who are constantly improving it. The new downloadable content from Future Club has been excellent, with each character receiving widespread praise. Even in 2026, Skullgirls 2nd Encore stands out as a consistently great fighting game, maintaining its impressive graphics and fast-paced, team-based battles since its initial release.
Despite not changing much in how it plays, Skullgirls has maintained a loyal and active community of dedicated fans over the years. With Future Club hinting at a fifth downloadable character for Skullgirls 2nd Encore, it doesn’t look like the game’s popularity will fade anytime soon, even with new fighting games constantly being released.
